Chapter 14 — The Night Dominic Burned His Empire

Chapter 14 — The Night Dominic Burned His Empire

02:59.

The red numbers began counting down.

02:58.

02:57.

Dominic stared at the timer.

For seventeen years, he had believed his greatest battle was against enemies outside the Vale empire.

He had been wrong.

The war had always been inside his own bloodline.

And now the people who had created that war had trapped his family beneath the house.

Mia was somewhere beneath the east wing.

Harper was missing from his sight.

Elena was bleeding.

Nathan could barely stand.

Claire was holding a gun with trembling hands.

And the man in the hidden room—the man who claimed to be Dominic's stolen twin—was connected to machines that kept him alive.

Dominic looked at Elena.

"You planted the bomb."

She closed her eyes.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because they were coming."

"Who?"

"The Council."

Dominic's voice became cold.

"You could have warned me."

"I tried."

"When?"

"Every time I lied to you."

Dominic stared at her.

"That's not an answer."

Elena looked at him.

"It was the only language Richard taught us."

02:31.

Dominic turned toward the hidden room.

"Can he walk?"

The man shook his head.

"No."

"What's your name?"

A faint smile appeared.

"Daniel."

Dominic froze.

"Daniel."

"Yes."

Dominic stared at him.

"The name I was given."

Daniel nodded.

"Richard gave it to you after he stole mine."

Dominic's hands curled into fists.

"So I was living your life."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because you were healthier."

Dominic looked at the medical equipment.

Daniel's body was thin.

Scarred.

His veins were marked by years of needles.

Dominic suddenly understood.

"They used you."

Daniel laughed softly.

"They used everyone."

02:14.

Dominic stepped toward him.

"I'm getting you out."

Daniel shook his head.

"You can't."

"Why?"

"Because I'm connected to the system."

Dominic looked at the machines.

"Then disconnect it."

"If you disconnect me, the bomb detonates."

Dominic froze.

Daniel smiled sadly.

"That's why they kept me here."

A gunshot came from the tunnel.

Everyone turned.

Daniel grabbed Dominic's arm.

"They're here."

"Who?"

"The Council."

Dominic looked at Claire.

She nodded.

"He's right."

"How many?"

"Too many."

Dominic looked at Daniel.

"Can you shut the bomb down?"

Daniel nodded.

"From the control room."

"Where?"

"Under the east wing."

Dominic's expression changed.

"Mia."

Daniel nodded.

"She's there."

Dominic turned toward Nathan.

"Can you move?"

Nathan stood slowly.

"Yes."

"Then take Claire and Elena."

"Where?"

"Get the children out."

Nathan stared.

"And you?"

Dominic looked toward the tunnel.

"I'm going to the control room."

Nathan shook his head.

"No."

Dominic stared at him.

"This is my family."

Nathan's voice broke.

"So is mine."

Dominic stepped closer.

"You've spent seventeen years protecting me."

Nathan smiled.

"Then let me do it one more time."

The first explosion shook the estate.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Claire grabbed Elena.

"Move!"

Nathan lifted Daniel's wheelchair.

Dominic ran toward the east passage.

Gunfire erupted behind him.

He didn't turn.

Men in black stormed into the chamber.

Dominic fired.

One fell.

Another.

Then another.

But there were too many.

He ran deeper.

Past the old laboratory.

Past the abandoned operating room.

Past the steel doors marked with numbers.

M-01.

M-02.

M-03.

He stopped at M-17.

The door was open.

Inside were Harper's records.

Dominic grabbed them.

Then he saw a video monitor.

A live feed.

Mia.

She was running through another corridor.

"Dominic!"

He reached for the monitor.

"Mia!"

She turned.

"I found Harper."

Relief hit him.

"Where?"

"She's with me."

"Get out."

"I can't."

"Why?"

Mia looked behind her.

"There are children."

Dominic froze.

"What children?"

"Twenty-three."

His heart sank.

"The subjects."

Mia nodded.

"They're alive."

Dominic stared.

"How?"

"I don't know."

Mia looked at the camera.

"They've been hidden down here for years."

"Can you move them?"

"I'm trying."

Dominic's voice became urgent.

"You have two minutes."

Mia looked at him.

"Dominic."

"What?"

"There are files here."

"Leave them."

"No."

She shook her head.

"If we destroy this place, the truth disappears."

Dominic looked at the shelves.

Thousands of records.

Names.

Dates.

Children.

Deaths.

Experiments.

Everything his family had hidden.

He understood.

"Take what you can."

Mia shook her head.

"Not enough time."

Dominic looked at the camera.

"Then don't save the files."

"What?"

"Save the people."

Mia stared at him.

Then she nodded.

"Okay."

The feed went black.

Dominic ran.

02:00.

The control room was ahead.

The door opened.

Mia stood inside.

Harper was in her arms.

Dominic stopped.

For one second, he forgot everything.

He crossed the room and pulled them both into his arms.

Mia buried her face against his chest.

"I thought I lost you."

Dominic held her tighter.

"Never."

Harper looked up.

"Are we going home?"

Dominic looked at the countdown.

01:38.

"Yes."

Mia stared at the controls.

"How?"

Dominic looked around.

Three switches.

Three emergency systems.

One master key.

He remembered Daniel's instructions.

"Which one?"

Mia pointed.

"The red."

Dominic touched it.

Nothing happened.

"Wrong."

"The blue."

He pressed it.

A warning appeared.

PRIMARY SUBJECT REQUIRED.

Dominic frowned.

"Primary subject."

Mia looked at him.

"You."

"No."

She shook her head.

"Dominic, it wants your DNA."

He stared at the machine.

Then at his hand.

A small needle extended.

Mia grabbed his wrist.

"Don't."

"I have to."

"It could kill you."

"Then I'll take the risk."

He pressed his palm against the scanner.

The needle pierced his skin.

Blood entered the system.

The machine beeped.

IDENTITY CONFIRMED.

Then:

DOMINIC MORETTI.

Mia stared.

The name appeared again.

ORIGINAL HEIR.

Dominic's eyes widened.

"I'm the original."

Mia whispered:

"Yes."

The system unlocked.

The countdown stopped.

01:02.

Dominic exhaled.

Then another message appeared.

MANUAL DETONATION AVAILABLE.

He stared.

Someone had designed the system so the bomb could still be triggered manually.

A final camera activated.

Richard appeared.

He looked directly at Dominic.

"If you're seeing this, I've lost."

Dominic stared.

Richard continued.

"But losing the empire doesn't mean you win."

He smiled.

"Because the empire was never the money."

The screen changed.

A map appeared.

Hundreds of locations.

Banks.

Companies.

Politicians.

Police departments.

Hospitals.

Judges.

Dominic's blood ran cold.

"The network."

Mia whispered.

Richard continued:

"Every person who helped build this empire owes me."

"Every institution is compromised."

"Every government office has a price."

Then Richard looked directly at the camera.

"Burning the Vale empire will not destroy it."

He smiled.

"It will release it."

The screen went black.

Dominic stared at the map.

He understood.

Richard had built something far larger than a family business.

He had built a system.

A machine that could survive him.

A machine that could survive Dominic.

Unless Dominic destroyed every part.

Mia touched his hand.

"What are you going to do?"

Dominic looked at the controls.

"Burn it."

Mia frowned.

"The estate?"

"Everything."

"The companies?"

"Yes."

"The accounts?"

"Yes."

"The entire empire?"

Dominic nodded.

"All of it."

Mia stared at him.

"You'll lose everything."

Dominic looked at Harper.

"No."

He smiled faintly.

"I'll lose everything they gave me."

They ran.

Dominic carried Harper.

Mia followed.

Behind them, the control system activated.

The estate's security network shut down.

The vault doors opened.

Files began transmitting automatically.

Not to the Council.

Not to the government.

To thousands of journalists.

Investigators.

Lawyers.

Victims.

Every hidden record began appearing online.

Names.

Payments.

Photographs.

Contracts.

Project 17.

Everything.

Dominic had no idea who had designed the release system.

Then he realized.

Daniel.

His stolen twin.

The man who had spent seventeen years trapped beneath the estate.

Daniel had been waiting for someone to activate it.

Dominic reached the surface.

The estate was burning.

Flames climbed the western wing.

Windows exploded.

Smoke filled the night sky.

Nathan stood near the gates.

Blood covered his shirt.

Claire was beside him.

Elena sat in a wheelchair.

Daniel had been brought outside.

Mia reached Dominic.

Harper clung to his neck.

They watched the Vale mansion burn.

Dominic said nothing.

Mia took his hand.

"Are you okay?"

He looked at the flames.

"No."

She squeezed his fingers.

"Neither am I."

Harper whispered:

"Is our house gone?"

Dominic knelt.

He looked into her eyes.

"Yes."

She looked frightened.

"Where will we live?"

Dominic smiled.

"Somewhere no one can tell us who we're supposed to be."

Police sirens filled the valley.

Then helicopters.

Then reporters.

The empire collapsed within hours.

Bank accounts were frozen.

Companies were seized.

Executives disappeared.

Politicians resigned.

Hospitals opened investigations.

The Council's members were exposed.

And the name Vale became synonymous with one of the largest scandals in the country's history.

But Dominic didn't watch the news.

He stood beside Mia.

Harper slept against her.

Nathan sat in an ambulance.

Claire was speaking with investigators.

Elena watched the burning estate.

Then she looked at Dominic.

"You did what I couldn't."

Dominic stared at her.

"What?"

"You chose the family."

He shook his head.

"No."

He looked at Mia.

"I chose people."

Elena smiled.

Then her expression became sad.

"There's still one thing you don't know."

Dominic frowned.

"What?"

"Richard wasn't the first."

Dominic stared.

"You said the Council."

"I was wrong."

"Then who?"

Elena looked toward the forest.

"The woman who owned this house."

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

"You."

Elena shook her head.

"No."

She pointed toward the road.

A black car had stopped beyond the gates.

A woman stepped out.

She was old.

Elegant.

And carrying a silver cane.

Dominic froze.

He knew her face.

He had seen it in every file.

Every photograph.

Every nightmare.

Mia whispered:

"Who is that?"

Dominic answered:

"My mother."

The woman walked toward them.

No guards stopped her.

No police moved.

Everyone seemed to recognize her.

She stopped in front of Dominic.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then she looked at Harper.

Her expression softened.

"My granddaughter."

Harper woke.

She looked at the woman.

Then whispered:

"You're the lady from my dreams."

The woman's face changed.

"You remember."

Harper nodded.

"I remember everything."

Dominic's blood went cold.

"What did you do to her?"

The woman looked at him.

"I didn't do anything."

"Then why does she remember?"

"Because she was the only one who could."

Dominic stepped forward.

"Tell me the truth."

The woman smiled.

"You burned the empire."

She looked at the flames.

"But you haven't destroyed it."

Dominic's expression hardened.

"What remains?"

She leaned toward him.

"The people who built it."

Then she turned.

"Your father."

"Richard is dead."

"No."

She shook her head.

"Richard is only one of them."

Dominic stared.

"Then who?"

The woman looked back.

"Your real father."

Dominic froze.

"My father?"

She nodded.

"He's alive."

Mia's face went pale.

"Where?"

The woman smiled.

"He's standing much closer than you think."

Dominic turned.

Nathan.

Daniel.

Alexander.

Claire.

None moved.

Then someone stepped from the darkness behind the burning estate.

A tall man.

Gray-haired.

His face partially scarred.

Dominic stared.

The man looked at him.

And smiled.

"I've been waiting for you, son."

Dominic couldn't breathe.

The woman whispered:

"Now you finally get to meet the man who started all of this."

The stranger looked at Harper.

Then Mia.

Then Dominic.

And said:

"Your story was never about the Vale empire."

He smiled.

"It was about what happens when a family discovers its blood can be worth more than money."

The flames roared behind them.

Dominic tightened his hand around Mia's.

For the first time, he understood that destroying the empire had only been the beginning.

Because the final enemy had just stepped out of the shadows.

And he called Dominic—

son.
