CHAPTER 1: THE ROOM BEHIND THE DOOR

CHAPTER 1: THE ROOM BEHIND THE DOOR

The man's throat tightened.

The little girl stood in the center of the room, carefully dividing the food into portions so small they hardly seemed worth calling a meal.

Yet the children accepted each spoonful like a gift.

No one complained.

No one asked for more.

They simply waited their turn.

The man remained hidden outside.

His name was Daniel Reed.

At forty-two, he had spent most of his life building businesses, solving problems, and making decisions that affected thousands of employees.

Yet nothing in his experience had prepared him for this room.

Nothing had prepared him for the sight of a child pretending not to be hungry.

The older woman accepted the food with trembling hands.

"You said the same thing yesterday."

The girl's smile faltered.

Only for a moment.

Then she shrugged.

"I wasn't very hungry."

Another lie.

A painful one.

The woman looked away.

Perhaps because she couldn't bear to expose it.

Perhaps because she couldn't bear to thank her daughter for sacrificing herself yet again.

Daniel finally stepped forward.

The old wooden floor creaked beneath his shoe.

Every head turned.

The room instantly became silent.

Fear flashed across several faces.

The younger children pulled closer together.

The little girl stepped between them and the stranger.

Protecting them.

Even now.

Even while starving.

Daniel slowly raised both hands.

"I'm sorry."

Nobody spoke.

"I didn't mean to frighten you."

The woman against the wall struggled to sit upright.

"Who are you?"

"My name is Daniel."

His eyes drifted around the room.

Seven children.

One sick mother.

No heat.

Almost no furniture.

And certainly no food.

Daniel swallowed.

May you like

"When was the last time everyone ate a full meal?"

The silence answered him before anyone else could.
