CHAPTER 4: THE SHIFT IN POWER

CHAPTER 4: THE SHIFT IN POWER
Daniel stepped toward the front door—but not to leave.
To open it.
He pulled it wide.
Cold air entered the mansion like a truth that couldn’t be stopped.
The wife stared at him, disbelief turning into something sharper.
“You wouldn’t actually throw me out,” she said.
Daniel didn’t look at her when he replied.
“I already did.”
She froze.
For the first time, something real flickered behind her eyes.
Not anger.
Fear.
Not of punishment.
Of irreversibility.
Because powerful people rarely recognize the moment they stop being protected.
CHAPTER 5: THE MOTHER RETURNS UPSTAIRS
Daniel turned back to his mother.
“Come on,” he said gently.
He guided her toward the staircase.
Not forcing.
Not rushing.
Just steady support.
Step by step, she climbed.
The same stairs she had likely been pushed down in silence before.
At the top, she hesitated.
“I don’t want to make things worse,” she whispered again.
Daniel shook his head.
“You won’t.”
A pause.
“You never did.”
That was the moment her expression changed.
