Chapter 10: The Perfect Scapegoat

Chapter 10: The Perfect Scapegoat
The courtroom fell into stunned silence.
Every eye followed the tall man as he walked toward the witness stand.
Evelyn's breathing became shallow.
"It can't be..." she whispered.
Detective Harper looked at her.
"You know him?"
She nodded slowly.
"That's Dr. Steven Lawson."
"The husband of Dr. Emily Lawson?"
"Yes."
Harper frowned.
"He was reported dead five years ago."
"So was his wife."
The man stopped before the judge and calmly raised his right hand to be sworn in.
He looked older than the photographs Harper had reviewed. His hair was streaked with gray, and a faint scar crossed his jaw, but there was no doubt about his identity.
Victoria watched him with quiet satisfaction.
Her final move had begun.
A Witness from the Dead
Victoria's attorney approached.
"Please state your name."
"Dr. Steven Lawson."
"Were you employed by the Whitmore family?"
"I was."
"In what capacity?"
"I served as a consulting physician for Noah Whitmore during his rehabilitation."
The attorney nodded.
"Dr. Lawson, did you ever witness Mrs. Victoria Whitmore abusing Noah?"
"No."
The courtroom stirred.
Harper watched carefully.
The doctor's voice was calm.
Almost too calm.
The attorney continued.
"Did you ever observe neglect?"
"No."
"Did Mrs. Whitmore appear devoted to Noah's care?"
"Yes."
Victoria lowered her eyes, pretending to wipe away tears.
Several reporters quickly wrote down every word.
Harper requested permission to cross-examine.
"Dr. Lawson..."
"Yes?"
"According to state records, you died five years ago."
The doctor sighed.
"I entered witness protection."
A murmur spread across the courtroom.
"Witness protection?"
"My wife disappeared after receiving threats."
"So you faked your death?"
"On federal advice."
Harper narrowed his eyes.
"Can you produce documentation?"
"My attorney has already submitted it."
A federal-looking document was handed to the judge.
At first glance...
It appeared genuine.
Harper wasn't convinced.
Before he could continue, a police officer hurried into the courtroom.
He whispered urgently into Harper's ear.
The detective's face darkened.
"When?"
"Twenty minutes ago."
"Where?"
"Safe house number three."
Harper immediately excused himself.
Charles noticed.
"What happened?"
Harper answered quietly.
"Thomas Greene is gone."
The Vanishing
Less than two hours earlier, Thomas Greene had been resting inside a police-protected safe house outside Hartford.
Two officers guarded the entrance.
One monitored surveillance cameras.
Everything appeared normal.
Then, at exactly 9:17 a.m., the security cameras froze.
Only for thirty-eight seconds.
When the video resumed...
Thomas Greene had disappeared.
No broken windows.
No forced doors.
No struggle.
Only an empty room.
His bed was untouched.
His cane remained beside the chair.
But Thomas himself...
Had vanished.
Harper arrived within forty minutes.
Forensic teams were already searching every inch of the house.
A technician approached.
"We found something."
He handed Harper a disposable syringe sealed inside an evidence bag.
"Hidden beneath the bed."
Harper read the preliminary label.
A powerful sedative.
Professional grade.
Someone had entered a police safe house...
Kidnapped the key witness...
And left almost no trace behind.
Meanwhile, inside the courtroom, the hearing continued.
Without Thomas, one of the prosecution's strongest witnesses had disappeared.
Victoria remained remarkably composed.
Almost as though...
She had expected it.
Breaking News
As the afternoon session resumed, chaos erupted outside the courthouse.
Television crews suddenly abandoned the front entrance.
Reporters shouted into microphones.
Phones rang nonstop.
Inside, one of Harper's detectives rushed back into the courtroom carrying a tablet.
"You need to see this."
Harper looked at the screen.
His stomach tightened.
Every major news channel was broadcasting the same headline.
HOUSEKEEPER SUSPECTED IN WHITMORE MANSION FIRE
Below the headline appeared surveillance images.
Evelyn Brooks.
Walking through the mansion's basement...
Just minutes before the fire.
Another image showed her carrying a red gasoline container.
The timestamp placed her in the exact area where investigators had found one of the fire's ignition points.
Harper stared at the screen.
"This isn't possible."
Within minutes, reporters surrounded the courthouse entrance.
"Did the housekeeper start the fire?"
"Was she trying to murder Noah?"
"Was this an insurance scheme?"
"Was she fired because of misconduct?"
Questions exploded across television broadcasts.
Public opinion shifted almost instantly.
Social media declared Evelyn guilty before investigators could even examine the evidence.
The Arrest Warrant
Back inside the courthouse, the prosecutor received an emergency motion from the district attorney's office.
Victoria's attorney stood.
"Your Honor, given this newly discovered evidence, we respectfully request that Evelyn Brooks be removed from all contact with Noah Whitmore pending investigation."
"No!" Noah shouted before anyone else could speak.
The courtroom turned toward him.
Judge Brooks raised a hand.
"Young manâ"
"Evelyn didn't do it!"
The judge softened her voice.
"You cannot interrupt proceedings."
"She's the one who saved me!"
Tears filled Noah's eyes.
"If she wanted me dead..."
His voice cracked.
"...why would she run into the fire?"
The courtroom fell silent again.
Even some reporters lowered their cameras.
It was the simplest question of the day.
And no one had an answer.
Harper's Discovery
Instead of focusing on the media storm, Harper replayed the surveillance footage frame by frame.
Something bothered him.
Very few people noticed details.
Harper lived for them.
He enlarged the image.
Then enlarged it again.
The gasoline container.
Its label.
The handle.
He frowned.
"Wait..."
A forensic video analyst leaned closer.
"What?"
Harper pointed toward the timestamp.
"The camera angle."
"What about it?"
"This camera was located in the basement hallway."
"Yes."
"It melted during the fire."
The analyst nodded.
"It was completely destroyed."
"So how..."
Harper looked up.
"...did someone recover footage from a camera that no longer existed?"
The analyst's eyes widened.
The original recording had supposedly been erased from the servers.
Yet now...
Perfectly edited footage had suddenly appeared.
Only one explanation made sense.
It wasn't recovered.
It had been preserved.
Or...
Created.
Alone
That evening, Judge Brooks made a temporary ruling.
Until the footage could be authenticated...
Evelyn was prohibited from staying alone with Noah.
She wasn't arrested.
Not yet.
But she was officially under investigation.
As she stepped out of the courthouse, photographers shouted accusations.
"Murderer!"
"Why did you burn the mansion?"
"Did you do it for money?"
Police struggled to escort her through the crowd.
Noah watched helplessly from the courthouse window.
For the first time since the fire...
Evelyn looked defeated.
Not because she feared prison.
But because she had been forced away from the boy she had promised to protect.
Across the street, inside a black limousine, Victoria quietly watched the scene unfold.
Richard smiled for the first time in days.
"It worked."
Victoria nodded.
"For now."
She knew the evidence was fabricated.
She also knew something even more important.
The best lies weren't the ones everyone believed forever.
They were the ones people believed...
Long enough.
As the limousine pulled away, Harper's phone vibrated.
A secure message from Samuel Graves.
URGENT.
Attached was a single photograph taken outside the safe house just before Thomas Greene disappeared.
Harper zoomed in.
A white delivery van was parked across the street.
At first glance, it looked ordinary.
Then he noticed the logo on the driver's jacket.
It belonged to Whitmore Medical Servicesâ
A company quietly acquired by Victoria Whitmore three years earlier.
Harper whispered to himself,
"You made one mistake."
For the first time, he had a thread connecting the kidnapping directly to Victoria's business empire.
But before he could forward the image to the FBI, his phone screen suddenly went black.
A single line of text appeared.
DEVICE REMOTELY LOCKED
Someone...
May you like
Had just hacked his phone.
