Chapter 13: The Final Move

Chapter 13: The Final Move
The digital forensics laboratory was silent except for the steady hum of computers.
Everyone stared at the monitor displaying the surviving file:
WATCH EVELYN FIRST
Detective Michael Harper looked toward Rachel Kim.
"Can you open it?"
Rachel nodded cautiously.
"The encryption is damaged, but I think enough of the file survived."
She clicked Recover.
A progress bar slowly crawled across the screen.
12%...
31%...
67%...
Finallyâ
The video began.
Daniel Whitmore appeared once again, but this recording was different.
He wasn't sitting in his office.
He was standing in the mansion's library late at night.
The room was empty except for him.
He looked directly into the hidden camera.
"If you're seeing this," he said quietly, "then someone has already tried to erase everything else."
He smiled sadly.
"Which means Evelyn is probably in danger."
Evelyn's eyes widened.
"Me?"
Daniel continued.
"Evelyn never knew this..."
He glanced toward the hallway before lowering his voice.
"...but for years, she protected Noah without realizing how many times she interrupted someone's plans."
Charles frowned.
"What does he mean?"
The video answered immediately.
Daniel placed several photographs on the desk.
The first showed Noah's wheelchair after someone had loosened one of its wheels.
The second showed a bottle of medication with altered labels.
The third captured a staircase with cooking oil deliberately spilled across the polished floor.
Each photograph bore the same handwritten note:
Prevented by Evelyn Brooks.
Daniel sighed.
"Every time something happened..."
He paused.
"...Evelyn fixed it before anyone noticed."
He looked directly into the camera again.
"She believes she was only doing her job."
"No."
He shook his head.
"She was unknowingly saving my son's life."
The video ended.
Silence filled the room.
Evelyn struggled to speak.
"I... I never knew."
Charles slowly turned toward her.
"You were protecting him long before the fire."
Harper closed the laptop.
"And now they know it."
A Cornered Predator
Across the city, Victoria Whitmore sat alone in her penthouse.
The television was on.
Every news channel carried the same story.
NEW EVIDENCE EMERGES IN WHITMORE CASE
POLICE EXPAND INVESTIGATION
SHARES OF WHITMORE INDUSTRIES FALL AMID SCANDAL
Her phone rang repeatedly.
Board members.
Lawyers.
Investors.
She ignored every call.
For the first time in years, events were no longer under her control.
Richard burst into the apartment without knocking.
"They've frozen several company accounts."
Victoria remained silent.
"They questioned my driver."
Still nothing.
"They've reopened Daniel's plane crash."
She finally looked at him.
"So?"
"So?"
Richard stared at her in disbelief.
"Everything is collapsing!"
Victoria slowly stood.
"No."
"What do you mean, no?"
"It hasn't collapsed."
She walked toward the window overlooking Manhattan.
"It simply reached the final stage."
Richard felt a chill.
"What final stage?"
Victoria answered without turning around.
"The one where there are no more witnesses."
The Last Order
Late that night, Victoria drove alone to an abandoned marina on the Connecticut coast.
A man waited beside an old fishing boat.
He was tall, broad-shouldered, and wore a dark jacket with the hood pulled low.
Victoria handed him a thick envelope.
"I need one final job."
The man didn't touch it.
"I heard the fire failed."
"It did."
"The police are everywhere."
"I know."
He looked directly at her.
"This costs more."
Victoria slid another envelope across the table.
"Half now."
"The rest?"
"When it's over."
The man finally accepted the payment.
"Who's the target?"
Victoria didn't hesitate.
"Noah Whitmore."
The man remained silent for several seconds.
Then he asked,
"Any witnesses?"
Victoria's expression became as cold as winter.
"If necessary..."
She looked toward the dark water.
"...leave none."
The Hospital Trap
The following morning, Noah returned to Greenwich Memorial Hospital for a final examination before being transferred to a secure rehabilitation center.
Security had been increased.
Two police officers guarded every entrance.
Detective Harper personally inspected the building.
No visitors entered without identification.
Everything appeared secure.
Too secure.
Harper had learned long ago that criminals often preferred heavily protected places.
People assumed danger couldn't reach them there.
That assumption killed.
At 10:17 a.m., a hospital orderly pushed a supply cart toward Noah's room.
His uniform looked genuine.
His identification badge scanned successfully.
No one stopped him.
Inside the cart...
Hidden beneath folded blankets...
Lay a compact pistol fitted with a suppressor.
Evelyn's Instinct
Because of the court's temporary order, Evelyn was waiting in the visitor's lounge.
She watched nurses moving through the corridor.
Doctors discussed patients.
Families carried flowers.
Everything looked normal.
Then she noticed something.
The orderly pushing the supply cart wore brand-new shoes.
Perfectly polished.
Hospital orderlies walked miles every day.
Their shoes were never spotless.
It was a tiny detail.
Most people would never notice.
Evelyn did.
She quietly stood.
Something felt wrong.
The orderly stopped outside Noah's room.
He looked once in each direction.
Then he reached beneath the blankets.
Evelyn suddenly shouted,
"Stop!"
The man looked up.
Their eyes met.
In that instant, he knew he had been recognized.
He drew the pistol.
The hallway erupted into chaos.
People screamed.
Police officers rushed forward.
The assassin fired once.
The silenced shot shattered the glass beside Noah's hospital bed.
Harper tackled the gunman before he could fire again.
The pistol slid across the polished floor.
The assassin broke free and sprinted down the corridor.
Officers gave chase.
The Escape
The gunman reached the emergency stairwell.
He threw open the heavy metal door.
Two officers followed only seconds behind.
A single gunshot echoed through the stairwell.
Then another.
When Harper finally reached the landing...
The assassin was gone.
A broken window overlooked the parking garage below.
Far beneath, a black motorcycle sped away at high speed.
The hitman had escaped.
But something remained.
Harper looked down at the floor.
The assassin had dropped a disposable phone during the struggle.
A Deadly Discovery
Digital technicians immediately examined the device.
Most of its contents had already been wiped remotely.
Only one message survived.
Sent three hours earlier.
From an unregistered number.
It contained only five words:
Finish it before the hearing.
Attached was a bank transfer confirmation.
The payment had been routed through four offshore companies before reaching the assassin.
Rachel Kim traced the final account.
Her eyes widened.
"It leads back to..."
She stopped.
Harper leaned closer.
"To who?"
Rachel swallowed.
"Whitmore Medical Services."
The same company linked to Thomas Greene's disappearance.
The same company secretly owned by Victoria Whitmore.
A Desperate Woman
That evening, police obtained an emergency warrant to arrest Victoria for conspiracy to commit murder.
But when officers arrived at her penthouse...
It was empty.
Every computer was gone.
Every file cabinet had been cleared.
Her passport had disappeared.
The security cameras had been disabled exactly twenty minutes before the raid.
Only one thing remained on the dining table.
A crystal wine glass.
Beneath it...
A handwritten note addressed to Detective Harper.
You're still looking in the wrong direction.
Harper folded the note carefully into an evidence bag.
He didn't smile.
He didn't speak.
But deep inside, he understood something.
Victoria wasn't running because she still believed she could win.
She was running because she had one final secret left to protect.
And desperate people were often the most dangerous.
As Harper left the penthouse, his phone rang.
It was Samuel Graves.
His voice was unusually tense.
"We found Thomas Greene."
Harper stopped walking.
"Is he alive?"
There was a long silence.
Finally, Graves answered.
"Yes..."
"But he's not alone."
"Who is with him?"
Graves took a slow breath.
"You'd better get here."
Harper frowned.
"Why?"
"Because the man guarding Thomas..."
He hesitated.
May you like
"...is wearing an FBI badge."
