Maria sat quietly in the living room with her sons while detectives completed their reports.
Daniel apologized to her personally.
"I should have questioned the accusation before the police were called."
Maria shook her head gently.
"You believed the truth once you saw it."
"That matters."
Meanwhile, Victoria faced investigators in Daniel's study.
The evidence was overwhelming.
Security footage.
The emergency safe access log.
Her fingerprints on the jewelry box.
And the recorded phone call in which she falsely reported the theft.
The lead detective closed his notebook.
"Mrs. Crawford, you are under investigation for filing a false police report, fabricating evidence, and attempting to falsely implicate another person."
Victoria looked toward Daniel.
"Please... tell them not to do this."
Daniel's voice remained calm.
"I cannot ask the law to ignore what you chose to do."
She began to cry.
But for the first time, her tears could not erase the consequences of her actions.
That evening, Daniel arranged temporary housing, legal assistance, and paid leave for Maria while the investigation concluded.
He also established an education fund for her two sons.
"It doesn't erase what happened," he said.
"But I hope it helps you begin again."
