The flashing lights from the police cars reflected across the windows of the Hayes mansion.
Emily Carter stood motionless in the grand foyer while an officer carefully lifted the empty velvet jewelry box from her handbag.
Victoria Hayes folded her arms.
"I trusted you for six years."
Emily's voice trembled.
"I didn't take your bracelet."
"But the box was in your purse."
Emily couldn't argue with what everyone had seen.
The box had been there.
She just had no idea how.
As the officer asked routine questions, Emily replayed the afternoon in her mind.
