Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Red Dress
The dining hall fell into complete silence.
Crystal chandeliers reflected across terrified faces as the young technician carried the little girl into the room.
A silver fork slipped from Mr. Hawthorne's hand.
It clattered onto his china plate.
"Lily..."
His voice cracked.
The little girl looked at him with frightened eyes but stepped backward.
"No..."
"I don't know you."
The woman in the elegant red dress stood so abruptly that her chair crashed onto the marble floor.
"Who brought her here?" she demanded.
"She shouldn't be—"
She stopped herself too late.
Everyone heard it.
She shouldn't be here.
The technician slowly lowered Lily to the floor.
"I found her locked inside the east wing."
He held up the rusty key.
"From the outside."
Every guest turned toward the woman in red.
For years, she had claimed to be the devoted stepmother who never stopped searching for the missing child.
