Chapter 10: Blood on the Marble Steps

Chapter 10: Blood on the Marble Steps

The Montgomery County Courthouse had witnessed thousands of battles.

Criminal trials.

Corporate disputes.

Family wars hidden behind expensive suits and carefully chosen words.

But no one inside the building that morning would ever forget what happened on those marble steps.

Because some moments did not become memories.

They became scars.

Three weeks had passed since the first courtroom hearing.

The public had changed its opinion of Khloe Harrington.

At first, she was just another wealthy woman involved in a billionaire divorce.

A headline.

A rumor.

A piece of entertainment.

But after her testimony and the evidence Harrison presented, people began seeing something different.

They saw a woman who had spent years protecting someone who betrayed her.

They saw a mother fighting for her unborn child.

They saw courage.

And Richard Harrington hated that.

Because sympathy was the one thing he could not purchase.

Money could buy influence.

Power could buy silence.

But genuine public support?

That had to be earned.

And Richard had spent years destroying the possibility of earning it.

Inside his penthouse, Richard watched news coverage of Khloe leaving court.

Every image made him angrier.

There she was.

Standing beside Harrison.

Looking stronger.

Looking calmer.

Looking like someone who had moved beyond him.

He hated that most.

Not the lawsuit.

Not the investigation.

Not even the possibility of losing money.

He hated that Khloe no longer needed him.

For six years, he had believed he was the center of her world.

Now he was discovering something terrifying.

He had never been the center.

He had only been the person standing in front of it.

Her strength had always been there.

He simply never respected it.

Richard poured himself a drink.

His phone rang.

Vanessa.

He stared at the name.

Then answered.

“What?”

Her voice was cold.

“We need to talk.”

“We have nothing to discuss.”

“That’s not true.”

Richard laughed bitterly.

“You tried to take my company.”

“And you tried to destroy your wife.”

Silence.

The accusation landed because it was true.

Vanessa continued.

“You and I have the same problem.”

Richard frowned.

“What?”

“Harrison Cole.”

Richard looked out the window.

For the first time, he realized something.

He and Vanessa hated each other now.

But they were both afraid of the same person.

Two days later, Harrison received a warning.

Not a threat.

A warning.

Those were different.

Threats came from desperate people.

Warnings came from people who knew something.

The message was simple:

Keep Khloe away from court tomorrow.

No name.

No explanation.

Harrison stared at the screen.

Khloe noticed immediately.

“What happened?”

He locked the phone.

“Nothing.”

She gave him a look.

She knew him too well.

“Harry.”

He sighed.

“There was a warning.”

Her expression changed.

“About me?”

“Yes.”

“From who?”

“I don’t know.”

Khloe looked toward the courthouse documents.

“Should I stop going?”

The question bothered him.

Not because he wanted her to stop.

Because he understood what the enemy wanted.

Fear.

Withdrawal.

Silence.

“No.”

Khloe looked surprised.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Harrison looked at her.

“Because if we let people scare us away from the truth, they win before the fight even begins.”

She nodded slowly.

Then she smiled faintly.

“You sound like Dad.”

For a moment, Harrison softened.

Their father had been gone for years.

But some lessons remained.

Stand up.

Protect your family.

Never let powerful people convince you that they are above consequences.

The morning of the hearing arrived.

The sky was unusually clear.

The courthouse steps were crowded.

Reporters.

Lawyers.

Spectators.

Everyone wanted to see the next chapter of the Harrington scandal.

Khloe stepped out of the car carefully.

Eight months pregnant.

One hand holding Harrison’s arm.

The other resting over her stomach.

“You okay?” Harrison asked.

She nodded.

“I’m nervous.”

“That’s normal.”

“No.”

She looked at the courthouse.

“I’m nervous because I know this is the last time I’ll be afraid.”

Harrison looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

Khloe took a breath.

“After today, I stop thinking about what Richard did to me.”

A pause.

“I start thinking about what I’m building for my daughter.”

Harrison smiled slightly.

That was the woman he had been waiting to see.

Not the woman who survived.

The woman who rebuilt.

At the top of the courthouse steps, Vanessa Kensington appeared.

She was not supposed to be there.

Everyone noticed.

Including Harrison.

She stood perfectly still.

Elegant.

Controlled.

Beautiful.

But Harrison saw something beneath the surface.

Panic.

Khloe saw her too.

The woman who had destroyed her marriage.

The woman who had mocked her pain.

The woman who believed she could replace her.

For a moment, their eyes met.

Vanessa walked closer.

“Khloe.”

The sound of her name from Vanessa’s mouth felt almost insulting.

Khloe stopped.

“What do you want?”

Vanessa looked around.

The reporters.

The cameras.

The crowd.

Then back at Khloe.

“I want to explain.”

Khloe almost laughed.

“Now?”

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Richard lied to both of us.”

Harrison stepped forward.

“Walk away.”

Vanessa ignored him.

“He never planned to choose me.”

Khloe stared.

“What?”

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

“He planned to use me as long as I was useful.”

For a second, Khloe saw something unexpected.

Not the villain.

A woman who had also been manipulated.

But the sympathy disappeared quickly.

Because Vanessa had made choices.

“You knew what you were doing.”

Vanessa looked away.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“I did.”

Before anyone could say anything else…

Everything changed.

It happened in seconds.

A sudden movement.

A scream.

A push.

Nobody understood immediately.

One moment Khloe was standing.

The next…

She was falling.

Her body hit the first marble step.

Then another.

Then another.

Thirty steps.

Thirty moments of horror.

The entire courthouse froze.

The sound that followed was not a scream.

It was silence.

Then someone shouted.

“Call an ambulance!”

Harrison moved before anyone else.

He ran down the steps.

Not as an attorney.

Not as the man feared by corporations.

As a brother.

His knees hit the marble.

His hands scraped against the stone.

“Khloe!”

Her eyes opened slightly.

“Harry…”

Blood spread across the white steps.

His entire world narrowed to one person.

Her.

The child.

The life she had fought so hard to protect.

“Stay awake.”

His voice broke.

“Look at me.”

Khloe tried.

“The baby…”

The words barely escaped.

“The baby, Harry…”

Harrison placed his hand over hers.

“I’m going to save both of you.”

But even as he spoke those words…

He felt something inside him change.

Because when Harrison Cole entered a courtroom, he fought for justice.

When someone threatened his family…

He fought for something much darker.

Consequences.

At the top of the stairs, Vanessa stood frozen.

Her hands were shaking.

She looked at them.

Then at Khloe.

“I didn’t…”

Her voice disappeared.

Richard arrived moments later.

He pushed through the crowd.

And Harrison saw him.

The man who had promised to love Khloe.

The man who had sworn to protect her.

Standing there.

Doing nothing.

That was the moment something inside Harrison broke.

Not because Richard caused the fall.

Not yet.

But because even now…

Even seeing the mother of his child bleeding on the courthouse steps…

Richard’s first instinct was fear.

Not concern.

Not love.

Fear.

Fear of what this would mean for him.

Harrison slowly stood.

The paramedics arrived.

They lifted Khloe onto the stretcher.

Before leaving, she reached for Harrison’s hand.

“Harry…”

“I’m here.”

“Don’t let them win.”

His eyes hardened.

“They won’t.”

Inside the ambulance, Khloe fought to stay conscious.

Outside, Harrison watched the doors close.

Then he turned.

The crowd became silent.

Everyone saw it.

The change.

The moment Harrison Cole stopped being a lawyer.

The moment he became something else.

He walked toward Richard.

Slowly.

Calmly.

Richard stepped back.

“Harrison…”

The attorney looked at him.

Not with anger.

Anger was temporary.

This was colder.

“You should pray.”

Richard swallowed.

“For what?”

Harrison looked toward the ambulance carrying his sister away.

“For the baby to be okay.”

A pause.

“Because if anything happens to either of them…”

He stepped closer.

“Your money won’t save you.”

Richard said nothing.

“And your name won’t protect you.”

The courthouse doors opened behind Harrison.

The world was watching.

Cameras were recording.

Everyone saw the feared attorney make one promise.

Quietly.

Without emotion.

“I will take everything from you.”

Hours later, doctors rushed Khloe into emergency surgery.

Harrison stood outside the operating room.

Alone.

For the first time in years…

He prayed.

Not as a lawyer.

Not as a strategist.

As a brother.

Then his phone rang.

Daniel.

Harrison answered.

“We found the person who pushed her.”

His eyes opened.

“Who?”

A long silence.

Then Daniel said:

“It wasn’t Vanessa.”

Harrison became still.

“What?”

“We checked everything.”

Another pause.

“The person responsible was someone neither of us expected.”

Harrison’s grip tightened around the phone.

“Who?”

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“The person behind Operation Phoenix.”

The hallway became silent.

“Richard’s father’s old partner.”

Harrison looked toward the operating room.

The war had changed.

This was no longer just about divorce.

Not just money.

Not just betrayal.

Someone had tried to kill his sister.

And now Harrison Cole had only one goal.

Find the person responsible.

And make sure they never hurt anyone again.

Because the blood on the marble steps had changed everything.

May you like

The battle was no longer about winning.

It was about justice.
