Chapter 2: The Divorce Trap

Chapter 2: The Divorce Trap

Richard Harrington had built an empire by understanding one simple truth:

People believed what they wanted to believe.

Investors wanted to believe he was a visionary.

Employees wanted to believe he was a powerful leader.

Politicians wanted to believe he was a respectable businessman.

And for six years, Khloe wanted to believe he was a devoted husband.

But sitting inside Harrison Cole’s office, with the rain tapping against the glass and his carefully designed image beginning to crack, Richard finally understood something.

The one person who had always believed in him was the one person he could no longer control.

His wife.

Richard adjusted his expensive watch and forced a calm expression onto his face.

“Khloe, I think there has been a misunderstanding.”

The sentence was almost impressive.

Almost.

Even after being exposed, Richard still sounded like a man explaining a minor inconvenience instead of a betrayal that had destroyed a marriage.

Khloe stared at him.

A few months earlier, that voice would have comforted her.

Now it only made her feel tired.

“A misunderstanding?” she repeated.

Richard nodded.

“Yes.”

He glanced toward Harrison.

“This is exactly why lawyers complicate personal matters. They make everything look worse than it really is.”

Harrison remained silent.

That bothered Richard.

Most people reacted when attacked.

They defended themselves.

They argued.

They became emotional.

Harrison did none of those things.

He simply watched.

Like a man studying an opponent before a fight.

Richard hated that.

“What exactly do you think happened?” Harrison asked.

Richard looked at him.

“The marriage between Khloe and me has problems. Every marriage does.”

“Problems?” Khloe whispered.

Richard ignored her.

“But that does not mean she should assume the worst.”

Harrison opened the file.

“Two years of secret hotel records.”

He placed a document on the desk.

“Private flights.”

Another document.

“Luxury purchases made through accounts connected to Vanessa Kensington.”

Another.

Richard’s expression remained controlled.

But his eyes moved.

Small movement.

Almost invisible.

Harrison noticed.

“You know what I find interesting?”

Richard said nothing.

“People who are innocent usually ask questions.”

Harrison leaned forward.

“Who is Vanessa?”

Silence.

“That’s because they want answers.”

Another pause.

“But people who are guilty usually calculate their next move.”

Richard smiled.

“You think you know everything because you found some messages?”

“No.”

Harrison closed the folder.

“I know enough.”

Richard looked at Khloe.

“Are you really going to let him do this?”

The question was designed carefully.

Not anger.

Not accusation.

A performance.

He wanted her to feel responsible.

Khloe recognized it now.

For years, Richard had always done this.

Whenever something went wrong, he changed the conversation.

When he missed anniversaries, he was stressed.

When he ignored her fertility struggles, he was overwhelmed.

When he stopped coming home, business was demanding.

He never apologized.

He simply created a situation where she felt guilty for being hurt.

But something had changed.

Khloe no longer wanted his explanations.

She wanted the truth.

“You lied to me,” she said.

Richard’s expression softened.

“I made mistakes.”

“No.”

Her voice became stronger.

“You made choices.”

That answer surprised him.

Because it sounded like Harrison.

Richard looked at her stomach.

“And now you’re doing this while pregnant?”

The room became silent.

Harrison’s eyes sharpened.

There it was.

The manipulation.

Richard was not defending himself.

He was attacking her.

“You’re emotional,” Richard continued.

“You’ve been under a lot of pressure. The pregnancy, the hormones, the stress—”

“Stop.”

Khloe’s voice cut through the room.

Richard stopped.

She had never spoken to him that way.

Not once.

“You don’t get to use my pregnancy to explain your betrayal.”

For the first time, Richard looked uncomfortable.

Harrison noticed.

So did Khloe.

The perfect husband was disappearing.

And underneath was something much uglier.

A man who believed kindness was only useful when it benefited him.

Richard stood.

“Fine.”

He reached into his briefcase.

Khloe immediately felt something was wrong.

Richard placed a document on the desk.

A familiar shape.

A legal folder.

Harrison did not touch it.

He already knew.

“What is that?” Khloe asked.

Richard sighed.

“Something I didn’t want to do this way.”

Harrison’s expression changed.

“Divorce papers.”

The words hit harder than Khloe expected.

Even after everything.

Even after the affair.

Even after the financial betrayal.

Seeing those papers made something inside her break.

Because some part of her still remembered the man who held her hand during their wedding.

The man who promised forever.

Richard saw her reaction.

He thought he had won.

“You see?”

He spoke gently.

“This is exactly why I came here. I wanted to handle this privately.”

Harrison finally picked up the papers.

He scanned them.

Then he laughed.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

A quiet laugh.

Richard frowned.

“What’s funny?”

Harrison looked up.

“You.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“I don’t see what’s amusing.”

“No.”

Harrison flipped through the pages.

“That’s the problem.”

He placed the documents down.

“You thought you were smarter than everyone else.”

Richard said nothing.

“You filed for divorce before the child was born because you believed Khloe would be vulnerable.”

Harrison tapped the papers.

“You requested primary control of marital assets.”

Another page.

“You claimed your business interests were separate property.”

Another.

“You requested that Khloe maintain confidentiality regarding your personal affairs.”

Khloe looked confused.

“What does that mean?”

Harrison looked at her.

“It means he wanted you silent.”

Richard interrupted.

“That clause is standard.”

“No.”

Harrison looked back at him.

“It is standard for people who are hiding something.”

Richard’s face hardened.

“You’re making a mistake.”

Harrison smiled.

“I haven’t made one yet.”

That answer bothered Richard.

Because Harrison was not reacting.

He was confident.

Too confident.

Richard had spent weeks preparing his divorce strategy.

He had hired consultants.

Accountants.

Private investigators.

He had carefully separated assets.

He had prepared a public image.

He had already imagined Khloe crying while he walked away with his company intact.

But he had not planned for Harrison.

That was the mistake.

The one variable he had ignored.

The one person who could not be bought.

Richard stepped closer.

“You should think carefully about what happens next.”

Harrison looked at him.

“Is that a threat?”

“No.”

Richard smiled.

“It’s advice.”

Harrison nodded.

“Interesting.”

He walked around the desk.

“Because I have some advice too.”

Richard waited.

“Call your accountants.”

A pause.

“Call your board members.”

Another pause.

“Call everyone who helped you hide these transactions.”

Harrison leaned closer.

“Tell them to start preparing.”

Richard’s smile disappeared.

“For what?”

Harrison looked directly into his eyes.

“For the moment they realize they built an empire on stolen money.”

Richard went completely still.

Because that was impossible.

Nobody knew about those accounts.

Nobody.

Not yet.

Harrison saw the reaction.

And he knew.

He had found another crack.

Richard grabbed the divorce papers.

“This conversation is over.”

He turned toward Khloe.

“You’ll regret choosing this path.”

Khloe looked at him.

The old Khloe would have cried.

The old Khloe would have begged.

The old Khloe would have asked him to stay.

But she was gone.

“I already regret one thing.”

Richard stopped.

“What?”

Khloe looked at him.

“I regret believing you were the man you pretended to be.”

For a moment, Richard had no answer.

Then he walked out.

The door closed.

Silence filled the office.

Khloe released a breath she did not realize she had been holding.

“He hates me now.”

Harrison looked at her.

“No.”

She looked confused.

“He hates losing.”

Khloe looked down.

“What happens next?”

Harrison returned to his desk.

“Now we stop playing defense.”

He opened a new file.

Inside were photographs, financial records, and investigation notes.

Khloe stared.

“When did you get all this?”

Harrison looked at her.

“Before Richard walked through that door.”

Her eyes widened.

“You knew he would come?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Harrison closed the file.

“Because arrogant men always follow the same pattern.”

He looked toward the window.

“When they think they are about to lose everything…”

His voice became colder.

“They try to destroy the person who discovered the truth.”

Khloe touched her stomach.

“And Vanessa?”

For the first time, Harrison’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“Vanessa Kensington.”

He opened another folder.

“She’s not just the mistress.”

Khloe frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Harrison turned the folder around.

Inside were photographs of Vanessa meeting with executives, investors, and people connected to Harrington Commercial Group.

“She has been positioning herself around Richard’s company for years.”

Khloe stared.

“So she wasn’t just having an affair.”

“No.”

Harrison’s voice lowered.

“She was building something.”

The room became colder.

Khloe looked at the woman in the photographs.

Beautiful.

Elegant.

Confident.

A woman who looked harmless.

But Khloe understood something now.

Beautiful things could hide dangerous cracks.

“What is she planning?”

Harrison closed the folder.

“That…”

He looked at the storm outside.

“Is what we are going to find out.”

Across the city, inside the penthouse Richard had promised would become their future home, Vanessa Kensington waited impatiently.

When Richard entered, she immediately stood.

“Well?”

Richard removed his coat.

His face was different.

Not confident.

Not victorious.

Worried.

Vanessa noticed.

“What happened?”

Richard poured himself a drink.

“Harrison Cole knows.”

The glass stopped halfway to his lips.

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“Her brother?”

Richard nodded.

For the first time all night, Vanessa looked afraid.

Because she knew exactly who Harrison Cole was.

Everyone did.

She walked toward the window.

“What are we going to do?”

Richard stared at the city lights.

Then slowly, his expression changed.

The fear disappeared.

Replaced by something darker.

“We destroy him first.”

Vanessa turned.

“And Khloe?”

Richard smiled.

A cold, empty smile.

“She was always the easiest part.”

But neither of them knew…

The woman they thought they had broken was no longer standing alone.

And the man they had challenged had spent his entire career destroying people exactly like them.

The war had begun.

And Harrison Cole never lost.
