Chapter 6 — The Recording They Never Destroyed

Chapter 6 — The Recording They Never Destroyed

The hospital monitor went black.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Emily stared at the empty screen.

Two days.

The trust transfers in two days.

And whoever had been watching them knew exactly how much time remained.

Daniel picked up his phone.

“Lock down the hospital.”

Detective Bennett answered immediately.

“Already doing it.”

“Seal every entrance.”

“We have officers on the way.”

“No visitors.”

“Understood.”

Daniel ended the call.

Evelyn was still holding Emily's hand.

Her face had gone pale.

“Gabriel doesn't bluff,” she whispered.

Emily looked at her.

“You know him.”

“Yes.”

“Tell me everything.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“Not here.”

Daniel looked around the room.

“She’s right.”

Emily frowned.

“Why?”

“Because if Gabriel can access hospital cameras, we don't know what else he can hear.”

Daniel pulled out his phone.

“I have a secure location.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Blackwood House?”

“No.”

She immediately shook her head.

“Never go back there.”

“Why?”

“Because that's where everything started.”

Daniel looked at Emily.

“Then where?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“Your grandfather's chapel.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“The old chapel?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your grandfather hid the original recording there.”

Daniel stared at her.

“What recording?”

Evelyn's eyes filled with fear.

“The recording that proves what happened the night I disappeared.”

They left the hospital through a private underground entrance.

Two police vehicles escorted them.

Daniel drove behind the lead car.

Emily sat beside Evelyn.

For the entire journey, Evelyn kept looking through the rear window.

Emily noticed.

“Are you expecting someone?”

“Yes.”

“Gabriel?”

“Not necessarily.”

“Then who?”

Evelyn whispered:

“Anyone who wants the truth buried.”

The old chapel stood on the edge of the Villard property.

It had been abandoned for years.

Its stone walls were covered in ivy.

The wooden doors were warped.

A bell tower leaned slightly to one side.

Daniel unlocked the door.

Inside, dust covered the pews.

Emily followed him.

“This place feels like a grave.”

Evelyn looked around.

“It was supposed to be.”

Daniel turned.

“What does that mean?”

“My father used this chapel for private meetings.”

“With whom?”

“Everyone.”

“Politicians?”

“Yes.”

“Businessmen?”

“Yes.”

“Criminals?”

Evelyn didn't answer.

Daniel understood.

They walked toward the altar.

Evelyn stopped.

“Move the cross.”

Daniel frowned.

“The cross?”

“Yes.”

He lifted the wooden cross from the wall.

Behind it was a small metal panel.

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a narrow compartment.

Empty.

He looked at Evelyn.

“There's nothing here.”

She stepped closer.

“Look underneath.”

Daniel reached inside.

His fingers touched something.

A small black box.

He pulled it out.

Emily stared.

“What is it?”

Evelyn whispered:

“The recording.”

The box was old.

Dusty.

Its metal surface was scratched.

There was no label.

Daniel placed it on the altar.

“How do we play it?”

Evelyn pointed to the side.

“There's a key.”

Daniel found it.

He turned it.

The box opened.

Inside was a cassette tape.

Emily stared at it.

“A cassette?”

“Your grandfather didn't trust digital technology.”

Daniel gave a bitter smile.

“Apparently, he had good instincts.”

He found an old recorder in a cabinet.

The machine still worked.

He inserted the cassette.

Nothing happened.

Then a click.

Static.

A man's voice.

Richard.

Daniel recognized it instantly.

“Where is the ledger?”

Emily froze.

A second voice answered.

Evelyn.

“You'll never have it.”

Richard laughed.

“You still think this is about money.”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“You know exactly what.”

There was a pause.

Then Richard said:

“You should have listened to me.”

“I listened for years.”

“And now?”

“Now I'm done being afraid.”

A chair scraped across the floor.

Then a loud crash.

Emily grabbed Daniel's arm.

The recording continued.

Richard's voice became quieter.

“You think exposing me will save you?”

“It will save my daughter.”

“Your daughter?”

“Our daughter.”

Richard laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

“What?”

“She isn't mine.”

Emily stopped breathing.

Daniel stared at the recorder.

Evelyn's voice trembled.

“Don't say that.”

Richard continued.

“She carries Blackwood blood.”

Silence.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“You know.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Because your brother told me.”

Emily looked at her mother.

“Gabriel?”

Evelyn nodded.

The recording continued.

Richard's voice was cold.

“He wants her.”

“He'll never get her.”

“You can't protect her forever.”

“I don't need forever.”

A pause.

“I only need tonight.”

Then another voice entered the recording.

A younger male voice.

Adrian.

Daniel's brother.

“Father.”

Daniel went completely still.

Adrian said:

“It's done.”

Richard replied:

“Good.”

Emily covered her mouth.

Daniel stared at the recorder.

“What did he mean?”

Nobody answered.

The recording continued.

Adrian said:

“She'll be gone before sunrise.”

Evelyn's voice shouted:

“Adrian!”

A struggle.

Then the sound of something hitting the floor.

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel's face had lost all color.

“My brother…”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“He was there.”

“He helped my father.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He believed Richard would give him control of the company.”

Daniel shook his head.

“He was twenty-three.”

“He was ambitious.”

“He was my brother.”

“I know.”

Daniel stepped away.

He pressed both hands against his face.

For years, he had believed Adrian died in a boating accident.

He had mourned him.

He had kept one photograph of him.

He had even visited the cemetery.

A grave that contained no body.

Now he understood.

Adrian hadn't died.

He had disappeared.

Because he had become part of the machine that destroyed his own family.

Emily listened again.

“Wait.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

“Play the last part.”

He rewound the tape.

The same voices.

The same argument.

Then the final seconds.

A woman's voice.

Not Evelyn.

Not Margaret.

Someone else.

Whispering:

“Emily will remember.”

Then Richard:

“Make sure she doesn't.”

The tape ended.

Emily stared at the recorder.

“Who was that woman?”

Evelyn's face changed.

“I don't know.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You know.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

“You recognized her.”

“No.”

“Mother?”

Evelyn's voice became firm.

“I have never heard that voice before.”

Emily looked at her.

“Then how did she know my name?”

Silence.

That question terrified everyone.

Daniel made a copy of the recording.

Then another.

He handed one to Detective Bennett.

“We need this secured.”

She listened to it once.

Her expression became grim.

“This is enough to reopen several investigations.”

“Can it prove my father ordered the attack?”

“It strongly supports it.”

“And Adrian?”

“We'll need more.”

Daniel nodded.

“Find him.”

“We're trying.”

“He's alive.”

“I know.”

“He's coming for Emily.”

“I know.”

Detective Bennett looked at Emily.

“Then we protect her.”

That evening, they returned to the mansion.

The entire property had been surrounded by police.

Security cameras had been replaced.

Every employee was questioned.

Every vehicle was checked.

But Emily still couldn't shake the feeling that someone was inside.

She went to her room.

The door was open.

She hadn't left it open.

She stopped.

Daniel appeared behind her.

“What happened?”

“I closed this door.”

He looked inside.

Nothing appeared disturbed.

Then Emily noticed something on her bed.

A cassette tape.

Her blood ran cold.

Daniel stepped in front of her.

“Don't touch it.”

He called Detective Bennett.

The tape was collected.

It was analyzed.

No fingerprints.

No usable DNA.

But there was a label.

Three words.

FOR EMILY ONLY.

They played it in the security room.

A woman's voice began.

Emily recognized it immediately.

Her mother.

But it wasn't the same recording.

This one was newer.

Evelyn's voice was older.

Tired.

“Emily, if you're hearing this, then I failed to keep you away from them.”

Emily began crying.

The recording continued.

“I need you to understand something.”

A pause.

“I didn't disappear because I wanted to.”

“I disappeared because someone betrayed me.”

Emily looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn was sitting across the room.

She had no idea the recording existed.

The voice continued.

“The person who betrayed me was someone I trusted more than anyone.”

Emily whispered:

“Who?”

The recording answered.

“Margaret.”

Evelyn's face went white.

Daniel looked at her.

His mother shook her head.

“No.”

The recording continued.

“She helped me escape.”

“She helped me hide.”

“But eventually…”

A long pause.

“She told Richard where I was.”

Emily stared at Margaret.

Margaret began crying.

“No.”

Evelyn stood.

“That isn't true.”

The recording continued.

“She believed she could control the situation.”

“But Richard found us.”

Emily's eyes widened.

“So that's how they found you.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“I never told Margaret where we were.”

The recording continued.

“She didn't betray me because she hated me.”

“She betrayed me because Richard threatened Daniel.”

Daniel froze.

Margaret covered her face.

The truth finally surfaced.

She had betrayed Evelyn.

Not because she wanted money.

Not because she wanted power.

Because Richard had threatened her son.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Is that true?”

Margaret nodded.

“I was twenty-nine.”

Her voice shook.

“He put a gun to your head.”

Daniel couldn't speak.

“He told me that if I didn't give him Evelyn's location, he'd kill you.”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“So you gave her up.”

“I thought I could save both of you.”

“But you couldn't.”

“No.”

Margaret looked at Emily.

“I have regretted it every day.”

Emily stared at her.

“My mother lost twenty-three years because of you.”

Margaret nodded.

“I know.”

“I lost my childhood.”

“I know.”

“You let me believe she abandoned me.”

“I know.”

Emily's voice broke.

“How could you live with that?”

Margaret looked at her.

“I didn't.”

The room became silent.

Then the recording continued.

Evelyn's voice:

“But Margaret didn't know everything.”

Emily looked up.

“What?”

The recording continued.

“There was another person.”

Daniel frowned.

“Who?”

Evelyn's recorded voice answered:

“Adrian.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“He helped Richard.”

“Yes.”

“He knew about me.”

“Yes.”

“And he helped hide me?”

“No.”

Evelyn's voice became quieter.

“He helped Richard find me.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“But why?”

“Because Adrian believed that if Emily disappeared, he would inherit everything.”

Emily stared.

“So my uncle tried to erase me for money.”

“Yes.”

The recording ended.

Daniel stood motionless.

Then he whispered:

“I killed him.”

Emily looked at him.

“What?”

“I mourned him.”

He laughed bitterly.

“I visited his grave.”

“There was no body.”

“I know.”

“I defended him.”

“You didn't know.”

“I should have.”

Emily stepped toward him.

“You were a child.”

Daniel looked at her.

“So were you.”

That sentence broke something inside both of them.

Later that night, Evelyn sat beside Emily.

“I am sorry.”

Emily leaned against her.

“You don't have to say it anymore.”

“I do.”

“Why?”

“Because I missed your entire life.”

Emily looked at her.

“You survived.”

“So did you.”

“I survived because of you.”

Evelyn smiled through tears.

Then she reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small silver key.

Emily stared.

“What is that?”

“Your father's.”

“My real father?”

Evelyn nodded.

“Who was he?”

“I never knew his name.”

Emily frowned.

“But you said—”

“I knew his symbol.”

She placed the key in Emily's palm.

A black bird was engraved on it.

“The man who gave me this said it would lead you to him.”

“Where?”

Evelyn looked toward Daniel.

“Blackwood House.”

Daniel stood.

“But we searched it.”

“Not completely.”

“What did we miss?”

“The room beneath the nursery.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“There is no room.”

“There is.”

“How do you know?”

Evelyn smiled sadly.

“Because I hid there the night I disappeared.”

At 2:00 a.m., Daniel, Emily, and Evelyn returned to Blackwood House.

The police remained outside.

Inside, the house felt colder than before.

They entered the nursery.

Evelyn walked to the fireplace.

She touched the stone.

“Here.”

Daniel examined it.

Nothing.

Then Emily noticed something.

A small blackbird carved into the wall.

She placed the key against it.

A mechanism clicked.

The fireplace moved.

A staircase appeared.

Emily stared.

“My mother knew this was here.”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“You hid something.”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Your father's identity.”

Emily's heart raced.

She walked down the stairs.

At the bottom was a small room.

Inside was a desk.

A photograph.

And another recording.

Daniel picked it up.

The label read:

THE MAN WHO SAVED EMILY.

Emily looked at her mother.

“Is this him?”

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.”

Daniel pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a man's voice.

Calm.

Deep.

Familiar.

“Evelyn, if you're listening to this, then Richard found us.”

Evelyn covered her mouth.

The voice continued.

“I couldn't save you.”

A pause.

“But I saved our daughter.”

Emily stopped breathing.

Our daughter.

Daniel looked at her.

The man continued:

“She will never know my name.”

“Not until she is old enough.”

“Not until the Villards are no longer powerful enough to hurt her.”

The recording ended with one final sentence.

“I love you, Evelyn.”

Emily stood frozen.

Then the machine clicked again.

A second recording started automatically.

This time, the voice was different.

A younger man's voice.

Adrian.

“I know who you are.”

Emily turned.

The recording continued.

“I know where Emily is.”

“I know about the trust.”

“And if anyone is listening…”

A pause.

“I'm coming for her.”

Daniel's face hardened.

Then Adrian laughed softly.

“You should have killed me when you had the chance.”

The recording stopped.

Outside, a car engine roared.

Daniel rushed toward the window.

Headlights appeared through the trees.

Then another.

And another.

Three black vehicles were approaching Blackwood House.

Detective Bennett shouted through the radio:

“Daniel, get out now!”

Daniel looked at Emily.

“Stay with your mother.”

“What?”

“Now.”

The front gate exploded open.

The vehicles entered the property.

Evelyn grabbed Emily's hand.

“Run.”

Daniel turned toward the stairs.

But before they could escape, every light in the house came on.

A man's voice came through the speakers.

Calm.

Almost amused.

“Hello, Daniel.”

Daniel froze.

“Adrian.”

The voice laughed.

“You finally found the recording.”

Emily's heart pounded.

Adrian continued:

“But you still haven't found the truth.”

A pause.

Then:

“Ask Evelyn who Emily's real father is.”

Emily turned toward her mother.

Evelyn's face went white.

The voice continued.

“Because I know.”

Then the doors slammed shut.

And from somewhere inside the mansion came a slow sound.

May you like

Footsteps.

Someone was already inside.
