CHAPTER 2: Mrs. Moretti

CHAPTER 2: Mrs. Moretti

The scandal exploded before sunrise.

By breakfast, everyone knew.

By lunch, nobody knew the truth.

Rumors spread faster than facts.

Some claimed I had cheated.

Others claimed Marco had.

Some said Dante had stolen his brother's fiancée.

Nobody understood what had actually happened.

Not until Marco stormed into the family villa.

I was sitting on the terrace when he arrived.

Dante stood beside me.

Calm.

Silent.

Dangerously calm.

Marco pointed at us.

"You embarrassed me."

I nearly laughed.

Embarrassed.

That was the word he chose.

Not betrayed.

Not hurt.

Embarrassed.

"You got my best friend pregnant," I said.

"You embarrassed yourself."

His face darkened.

"You think this is real?"

His eyes shifted toward Dante.

"She's using you."

Dante finally spoke.

"No."

One word.

Quiet.

Certain.

Final.

Marco froze.

Because Dante almost never raised his voice.

And somehow that made him more intimidating.

"You had four years," Dante continued.

"You wasted them."

The silence afterward felt sharp.

Marco looked at me.

Then at the engagement ring no longer on my finger.

Then at Dante.

For the first time, uncertainty appeared in his eyes.

Because he was starting to realize something.

Dante wasn't rescuing me.

He had been waiting.

Patiently.

Respectfully.

For years.

And now he no longer intended to step aside.

Three months later, in a private ceremony overlooking Lake Como, I became Mrs. Moretti.

Not Marco's wife.

Dante's.

The wrong brother had broken my heart.

The right one had quietly protected it.
