Chapter 2: The Man Who Didn’t Blink
The boy didn’t move.
He had learned, in a way children like him always did, that kindness often came with strings. Or worse—disappeared the moment you reached for it.
The toddler in his arms let out a small, tired whimper.
That sound broke something in the room.
The suited man exhaled slowly and took out his phone.
“Call the owner,” he said to the worker. “Tell them I’m clearing the store.”
The worker hesitated. “Clearing…?”
“Yes,” he replied, already walking toward the door. “Everything that isn’t sold today gets donated. Fresh stock replaces it tomorrow.”
The bakery erupted into whispers.
The boy’s eyes widened slightly. “Donated…?”
The man stopped at the door and looked back.
“To shelters. Children first.”
Silence hit harder this time.
Not shock.
Something closer to disbelief.
The boy shifted his weight uncertainly. His body wanted to run, but his feet refused to move. The promise was too big for his reality to understand.
The suited man stepped closer again, lowering his voice.
“What’s her name?” he asked, nodding toward the toddler.
The boy swallowed.
“…Lily.”
“And yours?”
The boy hesitated again.
“Rin.”
May you like
For the first time, the man’s expression softened—but only slightly.
“Rin,” he repeated. “You don’t have to survive this alone anymore.”
