Chapter 3: The Door That Stayed Open

Chapter 3: The Door That Stayed Open

Ten minutes later, everything changed.

Bakery staff moved quickly, filling boxes—not with scraps, not with leftovers, but with fresh bread, pastries, warm food still soft from the ovens. The same items Rin had been staring at through glass were now being placed carefully into containers.

He couldn’t understand it.

People didn’t do this.

Not for people like him.

The suited man stood near the entrance, making a few calls. His voice was calm, precise—like rearranging pieces on a board only he could see.

A woman nearby whispered, “Who is he?”

Another answered quietly, “I think… someone who decides things.”

Rin stood still, Lily’s head now resting weakly on his shoulder. She had stopped crying. That scared him more than the crying had.

A staff member approached slowly, holding a warm box.

“For you,” she said gently.

Rin hesitated.

His hands shook as he accepted it.

Warmth spread through his fingers.

Real warmth.

Not memory. Not imagination.

Something real.

The suited man finally approached one last time.

He crouched slightly, so he wasn’t towering over them anymore.

“I’ll arrange transport,” he said. “Medical check for her. Safe place for both of you.”

Rin stared at him for a long moment.

Then, quietly, he asked the only question that mattered to him:

“If I go… do I have to give her away?”

The man didn’t answer immediately.

That pause was heavy.

Honest.

“No,” he said finally. “Not unless you choose to.”

Rin’s grip tightened around Lily.

For the first time in a long time, he didn’t feel like running.

He felt like maybe—just maybe—he could stay still without losing everything.

The bakery door remained open behind them, letting in a soft stream of daylight.

And for the first time that day, Rin stepped forward instead of back.

END.
