Chapter 2: An Unexpected Call

Lila never imagined she would use the business card.

To her, it was simply a gesture of kindness from a grateful father.

Life quickly returned to normal.

The mathematics competition in London was everything she had dreamed of. Surrounded by brilliant students from around the world, Lila felt intimidated at first. But numbers had always been the one language that made perfect sense to her.

After two grueling days of exams, she placed among the top finalists.

The recognition came with congratulations—but very little financial support.

Back in Ohio, reality waited.

Her mother's health began to decline after years of exhausting work. Medical bills piled up. Lila took extra tutoring jobs, often staying awake until midnight helping younger students while trying to prepare for college entrance exams.

One evening, as she reviewed another stack of unpaid bills, an envelope arrived.

Inside was an acceptance letter from her dream university.

Below it was the tuition estimate.

Nearly impossible.

For the first time in years, Lila cried.

She reached into an old notebook searching for scratch paper.

A business card slipped onto the floor.

Daniel Whitmore.

She stared at it for several minutes before finally dialing the number.

She almost hung up after the first ring.

Instead, Daniel answered personally.

"I was wondering when you'd call."
