CHAPTER 6

CHAPTER 6

The Woman Behind the Files

The woman who held the truth had spent twenty-four years hiding from it.

Her name was Clara Bennett.

And unlike everyone else who had been connected to the Vance family tragedy, she had never forgotten.

She had simply been afraid.

Maya noticed the fear in Clara's hands before she noticed anything else.

The way her fingers tightened around her coffee cup.

The way her eyes moved toward the door every few seconds.

The way she lowered her voice even inside a crowded café.

Fear had a language.

Maya knew it well.

She had lived around it her entire life.

"How long have you known?"

Maya asked.

Clara looked down.

"Since the night you disappeared."

The answer felt impossible.

Maya stared at her.

"Then why didn't you come?"

Clara closed her eyes.

Because the truth was never simple.

Not when powerful people were involved.

"I tried."

The words came quietly.

"I went to the police."

Maya waited.

"And?"

Clara laughed bitterly.

"They told me there was no evidence."

A pause.

"Then three days later, my apartment was searched."

Maya felt cold.

"By who?"

Clara looked at her.

"You already know."

The answer didn't need a name.

Victoria Sterling.

Clara reached into her bag.

She placed a small envelope on the table.

"This is what I saved."

Maya looked at it.

"Why?"

"Because your mother asked me to."

The world seemed to pause.

"My mother?"

Clara nodded.

"Elena knew something terrible was coming."

Inside the envelope were several documents.

A birth certificate.

A photograph.

A handwritten note.

Maya's hands trembled.

Because for the first time in her life...

She was holding proof that she had existed before being found.

She unfolded the note.

The handwriting was elegant.

Careful.

Warm.

Even without knowing the person who wrote it, Maya felt something.

Connection.

My little girl,

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you the way I promised.

Maya stopped.

Her eyes filled instantly.

But never believe that you were abandoned.

Never believe you were unwanted.

Every decision I made was because I loved you.

Maya covered her mouth.

She couldn't continue.

Clara reached across the table.

"I'm sorry."

Maya shook her head.

"No."

Her voice broke.

"Don't say sorry."

She touched the paper.

"She wrote to me."

For twenty-four years, Maya had carried one painful belief.

That somewhere in the world, someone had chosen to leave her.

Now she was learning something different.

Someone had chosen to save her.

"What happened to her?"

Maya whispered.

Clara looked away.

"I don't know."

"Nobody knows?"

Clara hesitated.

"Someone knows."

Maya understood.

"Victoria."

Clara nodded.

That evening, Maya met Marcus again.

She placed the letter on his desk.

He read it silently.

When he finished, he closed his eyes.

"Elena always planned ahead."

"You knew her well."

Marcus smiled sadly.

"She was my sister."

A pause.

"But she was also the bravest person I knew."

"Why did she trust Clara?"

Marcus looked at the letter.

"Because Elena knew she couldn't trust everyone."

"Who could she trust?"

"Very few people."

Maya looked at him.

"Did she trust you?"

The question hurt him.

She could see it.

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you save her?"

Silence.

A painful one.

Marcus didn't avoid it.

That mattered.

"Because I was too late."

Maya waited.

"I was investigating Sterling Holdings."

He looked at the floor.

"I discovered something was wrong."

"What?"

"Money transfers. Hidden accounts. Fake companies."

He paused.

"By the time I had enough proof..."

He swallowed.

"They had already moved."

"Moved where?"

Marcus looked at her.

"After your family disappeared, Victoria Sterling vanished for six months."

Maya frowned.

"Why?"

"Because she was covering her tracks."

The next morning, Adrian arrived at Marcus's office.

Unexpected.

But not unwelcome.

He placed a folder on the table.

"I found more."

Marcus opened it.

His expression changed.

"Where did you get this?"

"Company archives."

Marcus looked at him.

"You know your family will destroy you if they find out you're helping us."

Adrian nodded.

"I know."

Maya watched him.

Still uncertain.

Still hurt.

But she noticed something.

He was afraid.

Yet he stayed.

That was different.

Marcus looked through the documents.

Then stopped.

A single page.

A signature.

A name.

His face changed.

"What?"

Maya asked.

Marcus handed it to her.

She read.

Then froze.

Acquisition approval: Vance Family Assets

Authorized by:

Richard Sterling

Adrian's father.

Maya looked at Adrian.

"Your father signed this."

He nodded slowly.

"I know."

"Did you know before?"

"No."

The answer came immediately.

"I swear."

Maya studied him.

The old version of herself might have immediately believed.

The old version might have immediately forgiven.

But she wasn't that woman anymore.

Trust was not given because someone asked.

It was earned.

Marcus pointed at another document.

"There's something else."

Everyone looked.

"The acquisition wasn't the final step."

"What do you mean?"

Marcus turned the page.

"The Sterling family didn't just want the Vance companies."

He looked at Maya.

"They wanted control of the inheritance."

Maya frowned.

"Why?"

"Because your grandfather left everything to you."

A pause.

"You were the obstacle."

The room became silent.

A child.

A little girl.

An obstacle.

That was how they had seen her.

Not as a person.

As a problem.

Maya stood.

"I want to know everything."

Marcus looked at her.

"You may not like what you find."

She looked at the medal around her neck.

"I spent twenty-four years not knowing anything."

Her voice became stronger.

"I can handle the truth."

That night, Clara called Maya.

Her voice sounded frightened.

"You need to listen carefully."

Maya sat up.

"What happened?"

"I found something."

"What?"

A pause.

"Something I should have given you years ago."

Maya gripped the phone.

"What is it?"

Clara whispered:

"Your mother's final message."

Maya's heartbeat quickened.

"Where are you?"

But Clara didn't answer.

Instead, Maya heard something.

A door opening.

A man's voice.

Clara gasped.

Then silence.

"Clara?"

No response.

"Clara!"

The call ended.

Maya immediately called back.

Nothing.

Again.

Nothing.

Minutes later, Marcus arrived.

One look at Maya's face told him.

"What happened?"

"Clara disappeared."

Marcus went still.

"Did she say anything?"

Maya handed him the phone.

He listened to the recording.

Then his expression hardened.

Because before the call ended...

There was one sound.

A voice.

A familiar voice.

Victoria Sterling.

Marcus slowly lowered the phone.

"It's starting."

Maya looked at him.

"What?"

"The people who buried the truth..."

He looked toward the city lights.

"They're trying to bury it again."

Maya held Lily close that night.

She watched her daughter sleep.

And for the first time, she understood something.

The truth was not just something you discovered.

Sometimes...

The truth was something people were willing to kill to keep hidden.

Across the city, Victoria stood in her mansion.

A glass of wine untouched in her hand.

Her assistant stood nearby.

"Clara Bennett has been found."

Victoria looked up.

"Good."

"She's alive."

A pause.

Victoria's expression changed slightly.

"Then she needs to remember one thing."

"What?"

Victoria looked at the old photograph of Elena.

And whispered:

May you like

"Some promises should have stayed buried."
