CHAPTER 7

CHAPTER 7

The Bloodline They Tried to Erase

The first thing Maya learned about having a family was that blood did not always mean protection.

And the second thing she learned was that some people would destroy an entire bloodline...

Just to make sure one person never discovered who they were.

The morning after Clara disappeared, Maya stood in front of the mirror for almost ten minutes.

Not because she cared about her appearance.

Not because she was preparing for another battle.

Because she was trying to recognize herself.

For twenty-four years, she had looked at the same face and seen a question.

Who am I?

Where did I come from?

Why did nobody come looking?

Now she had answers.

And somehow...

The answers created even more pain.

She touched the silver medal hanging around her neck.

The same medal Victoria had mocked.

The same medal Marcus had recognized instantly.

The same medal her mother had trusted enough to place around her daughter's neck before running into the darkness.

A bloodline.

A legacy.

A name.

Things Maya never wanted because she never thought they existed.

But now they were chasing her.

Downstairs, Adrian was waiting.

He looked different.

Not transformed.

Not magically forgiven.

Just different.

The arrogance was gone.

The certainty was gone.

The man who once believed his family could never be wrong now looked like someone who had discovered the foundation beneath his feet was cracking.

"Lily is with the nanny."

Maya nodded.

"Good."

A silence followed.

A difficult one.

Adrian looked at the medal.

"I keep thinking about that night."

Maya knew exactly which night.

The banquet.

The slap.

His silence.

The moment she realized she was alone.

"I should have moved."

His voice was low.

"I should have crossed the room."

Maya said nothing.

"I should have taken Lily from your arms."

Still nothing.

"I should have chosen you."

Maya looked at him.

"Yes."

One word.

But it carried years.

Adrian accepted it.

No excuses.

No defense.

That was new.

"I found something else."

He placed a folder on the table.

Maya looked at it.

"From the company?"

He nodded.

"Old employee records."

She opened it.

The first page was a list of names.

The second page made her freeze.

Elena Vance.

Former Director of Vance Foundation.

Status:

Missing. Presumed Dead.

Maya swallowed.

"Why is this here?"

Adrian turned the page.

"Because someone changed the records."

"Who?"

He hesitated.

Then:

"My father."

The room became silent.

Richard Sterling.

The man Adrian had spent his life admiring.

The man whose portrait hung in Sterling Holdings headquarters.

The man everyone described as brilliant.

Visionary.

A legend.

Now his name was appearing everywhere.

Every secret.

Every missing piece.

Every lie.

Maya continued reading.

Then stopped.

"What is this?"

Adrian looked.

A handwritten note was attached.

The child survived. Find her before Victoria does.

Maya's heart raced.

"Who wrote this?"

Adrian shook his head.

"I don't know."

Marcus entered the room.

"I do."

Both turned.

The colonel stood at the doorway.

His expression was serious.

"Who?"

Marcus walked toward them.

"Your father."

Adrian stared.

"My father?"

Marcus nodded.

"Richard Sterling knew."

Adrian looked almost offended.

"No."

Marcus did not soften the truth.

"Yes."

"You're saying my father knew Maya survived?"

"Yes."

"And he did nothing?"

Marcus looked at him.

"That depends on what you mean by nothing."

Maya frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Marcus opened another file.

"I found this in an archive."

He placed an old photograph on the table.

It showed a young Richard Sterling.

Standing beside Elena Vance.

And another person.

A person Maya had never seen.

A woman.

Older.

Holding a baby.

Maya leaned closer.

"Who is she?"

Marcus answered quietly.

"Your grandmother."

The room seemed to tilt.

"My grandmother?"

Marcus nodded.

"Your mother's mother."

Maya stared at the photograph.

Another person.

Another family member.

Another piece of a life she never knew existed.

"She was alive?"

Marcus looked away.

"For a while."

The answer frightened Maya.

"What happened?"

Marcus took a breath.

"Your grandmother discovered the truth before anyone else."

"What truth?"

"That the Sterling family wasn't simply trying to take your family's companies."

He looked at Maya.

"They were trying to erase your entire bloodline."

The words were terrifying.

Not because they were dramatic.

Because they explained everything.

The disappearance.

The missing records.

The false reports.

The destroyed documents.

The orphan girl with no history.

They had not just stolen her inheritance.

They had stolen her identity.

"Why?"

Maya whispered.

Marcus answered:

"Because as long as you existed..."

He looked at the medal.

"...the Sterling family empire could be challenged."

Adrian looked sick.

"My family destroyed everything because of money?"

Marcus shook his head.

"Not only money."

"What else?"

"Control."

He explained.

The Vance family had created something Victoria could never buy.

Respect.

Trust.

Loyalty.

People followed the Vances because they believed in them.

The Sterlings wanted the same thing.

But they did not understand how to earn it.

So they took it.

"They wanted the world to believe the Vances disappeared."

Marcus said.

"They wanted history to forget you."

Maya looked at Lily's photograph on her phone.

Her daughter.

Her future.

Suddenly, the thought terrified her.

Because if someone had erased her...

What would they do to Lily?

As if reading her thoughts, Adrian spoke.

"They won't get near her."

Maya looked at him.

The old Adrian would have promised.

This time...

He sounded like he meant it.

"I mean it."

He continued.

"Whatever happens next, Lily is not part of their game."

For the first time in days...

Maya saw something she recognized.

Not the perfect husband.

Not the obedient son.

A father.

Then Marcus's phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed almost immediately.

"What happened?"

A pause.

"Are you sure?"

Another pause.

Then:

"Keep her safe. We're coming."

Maya stood.

"Who was that?"

Marcus looked at her.

"Clara."

Maya's heart jumped.

"She's alive?"

"Yes."

"Where is she?"

Marcus hesitated.

"At an old Sterling property."

Maya frowned.

"Why would she go there?"

Marcus looked at the files.

"Because she found your mother's final message."

The three of them went silent.

Hours later, they arrived at the abandoned Sterling estate.

The building sat outside the city.

Old.

Empty.

Forgotten.

Almost like it had been waiting.

Inside, they found Clara.

Alive.

But terrified.

She held a small box.

The moment Maya saw it...

She knew.

"What is that?"

Clara looked at her.

"Something your mother wanted you to have."

Maya reached for it.

But Clara stopped her.

"Before you open it..."

Her voice trembled.

"You need to understand."

Maya waited.

"Your mother didn't just run away that night."

A pause.

"She made a deal."

Maya froze.

"What kind of deal?"

Clara looked toward the darkness of the old mansion.

"The kind that saved your life."

Marcus stepped forward.

"Elena traded something."

Maya whispered:

"What?"

Clara looked at the box.

"She gave Victoria Sterling what she wanted."

The answer came slowly.

"The location of the Vance family fortune."

Maya stared.

"Why would she do that?"

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

"Because Victoria threatened to kill you."

Silence.

Maya looked down at the box.

Her mother's final gift.

Her mother's final secret.

Her mother's sacrifice.

Slowly, she opened it.

Inside was a letter.

And one photograph.

The photograph showed Elena holding Maya as a baby.

Behind them was a man.

A man Maya had never seen.

Marcus looked at the image.

And his face changed.

"Impossible."

Maya looked at him.

"Who is he?"

Marcus whispered:

"The man who was supposed to protect you."

A pause.

"The man who betrayed your family."

Maya looked at the photograph.

Her entire world shifted again.

Because the enemy was not just outside her family.

May you like

It had been inside it.
