Chapter 3 – The Courtroom

Chapter 3 – The Courtroom

Eight months later...

There were no Christmas decorations.

No matching sweaters.

No pretending.

Only polished wooden benches and the quiet hum of a courtroom.

Dad avoided looking at me.

Chelsea sat beside him, her confidence gone.

Mom stared at the floor.

Attorney Rebecca Shaw stood beside me.

She whispered, "Ready?"

I nodded.

The evidence was overwhelming.

Bank records.

Trust documents.

Emails.

Old tax filings.

Every lie Dad had told over the years unraveled one page at a time.

When Grandpa's longtime attorney testified, the courtroom became completely silent.

"I personally explained the trust to Harold after Mr. Collins passed away."

Rebecca asked, "Did he understand his legal responsibilities?"

"Perfectly."

"So withholding the information from Leah..."

"...was intentional."

Dad closed his eyes.

For the first time in my life, he looked small.

The judge reviewed the final documents before speaking.

"This court finds that the trustee breached his fiduciary duties."

Every word echoed.

"The trust assets shall immediately be transferred according to the original agreement."

Dad lost control of every account.

He was ordered to repay years of withheld income.

He was also responsible for my legal fees.

Chelsea burst into tears.

Mom quietly sobbed beside her.

I felt... nothing.

Not revenge.

Not joy.

Just relief.

Outside the courthouse, Rebecca smiled.

"You didn't win because you yelled louder."

She handed me the final judgment.

"You won because the truth had paperwork."
