Chapter 2: The Truth About the Hospital

Chapter 2: The Truth About the Hospital

An hour later, the party had practically ended.

Guests quietly drifted toward the exits.

Vanessa sat alone at a distant table while Ethan and Lily spoke in a private lounge overlooking the city.

Neither knew where to begin.

Finally Ethan asked the question that had haunted him for two decades.

"What happened?"

Lily lowered her eyes.

"My grandmother took me away."

He frowned.

"What?"

"My treatment worked."

Her voice trembled.

"The doctors said I was recovering."

Ethan stared.

"But everyone told me you died."

Lily nodded sadly.

"Because my mother wanted a fresh start."

The story emerged slowly.

After Lily's recovery, her family moved across the country.

Her mother remarried.

The hospital records became difficult to access.

Letters were lost.

Phone numbers changed.

Life moved on.

Or at least it was supposed to.

"I wrote to you," Ethan said.

"Every year."

Lily looked shocked.

"I wrote too."

Both fell silent.

Dozens of letters.

None delivered.

Years stolen by misunderstandings and distance.

Then Ethan reached into his wallet.

Carefully.

Almost reverently.

And removed something old and faded.

A tiny paper crane.

Lily's hand flew to her mouth.

"You kept it?"

"For twenty years."

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"I thought you forgot me."

Ethan laughed softly.

"There wasn't a year I didn't think about you."

Outside the lounge window, city lights glittered.

Inside, two people realized they had spent decades carrying the same memory.

The same loss.

May you like

The same unanswered question.

Until tonight.
