Chapter 2: The Lie That Shook the Executive Floor

Chapter 2: The Lie That Shook the Executive Floor

Every pair of eyes shifted between Adrian and Claire.

Vanessa frowned. "Adrian... you know this woman?"

For the briefest moment, Adrian's breathing became uneven. Claire knew every expression her husband wore. The look on his face wasn't surprise.

It was fear.

He forced a smile.

"She's... an old family friend."

The words echoed through the pantry.

Claire stared at him without blinking.

An old family friend?

After twelve years of marriage...

After building Bennett Meridian Group together...

That was who she had become.

Vanessa immediately relaxed, looping one arm possessively around Adrian's.

"I knew she couldn't possibly be anyone important."

She looked directly at Claire.

"Tell your friend to apologize for stealing from my husband's bottle."

The employees watched in complete disbelief.

Nobody dared to move.

Claire slowly reached into her tote bag and removed a thin leather folder.

"I was going to wait until the audit was complete."

She placed the folder on the counter.

"But perhaps now is a better time."

Inside were copies of financial transfers, executive approvals, expense reimbursements, and photographs she had taken that morning.

Every page carried one signature.

Vanessa Cole.

Every questionable approval led back to her office.

Claire looked at Adrian.

"Would you like to explain why your secretary approved seven million dollars in vendor contracts without board authorization?"

Vanessa laughed.

"Those documents are fake."

Claire smiled faintly.

"Are they?"

She tapped one page.

"Then perhaps accounting can explain why the same shell company received payments every month."

The room became painfully quiet.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"Claire, this isn't the place."

"No."

She nodded.

"It isn't."

"It's the place where your secretary assaulted an employee."

"It's the place where she claimed you were her husband."

"It's the place where she's wearing my anniversary bracelet."

Vanessa instinctively covered her wrist.

Adrian noticed the bracelet for the first time.

His face turned pale.

"Vanessa..."

She quickly interrupted.

"You gave this to me."

Claire's voice remained calm.

"Interesting."

She opened another envelope.

"The insurance report for the bracelet I reported stolen six weeks ago."

She placed the original purchase certificate beside it.

The serial number engraved inside the sapphire clasp matched perfectly.

One employee gasped.

Another quietly stepped away from Vanessa.

For the first time, confidence disappeared from the secretary's face.

Adrian knew the lie was collapsing.

Before anyone could speak again, the elevator doors opened.

Three people stepped out.

The company's Chief Financial Officer.

The head of Internal Audit.

And the chairman of the Hail Family Trust.

The elderly chairman walked directly toward Claire.

Then, in front of everyone, he bowed his head respectfully.

"Good morning, Chairwoman Hail."

Silence exploded across the executive floor.

Vanessa's face drained of every color.
