Chapter 3: The Truth Behind the Empire

Chapter 3: The Truth Behind the Empire

Nobody spoke.

The only sound came from the coffee machine finishing its cycle.

Vanessa looked from the chairman to Claire and back again.

"No..."

She whispered.

"That's impossible."

Claire calmly removed the temporary employee badge from her blouse.

"I suppose introductions are overdue."

She placed the badge beside Adrian's water bottle.

"My name is Claire Bennett."

A pause.

"Legally..."

She looked toward Adrian.

"...Claire Hail Bennett."

"The Hail Family Trust owns fifty-one percent of this company."

Several executives nearly lost their balance.

The security guards immediately stepped away from Vanessa.

The chairman addressed the crowd.

"As of this moment, a formal emergency audit has begun."

"No executive is permitted to leave the building."

Vanessa grabbed Adrian's arm.

"Tell them!"

"Tell them this is ridiculous!"

Instead of defending her, Adrian lowered his eyes.

Claire noticed.

That silence revealed more than any confession.

Internal auditors entered every executive office.

Within an hour, they uncovered hidden contracts, inflated invoices, luxury vacations billed as corporate conferences, and dozens of unauthorized payments.

The evidence was overwhelming.

But the greatest betrayal wasn't financial.

It was personal.

Inside Vanessa's office, investigators found a locked drawer.

Inside the drawer were photographs.

Private photographs.

Weekend trips.

Luxury resorts.

Holiday dinners.

Adrian and Vanessa together.

Not as colleagues.

As lovers.

There were handwritten cards.

Expensive jewelry receipts.

Hotel reservations stretching back nearly three years.

Claire closed the folder without another word.

Her heart hurt.

Not because she had discovered the affair.

Because it had lasted while Adrian looked into her eyes every evening and promised everything was fine.

Adrian finally stepped forward.

"Claire..."

"I'm sorry."

She looked at him quietly.

"Are you sorry you betrayed me..."

"...or sorry you were caught?"

He had no answer.

Vanessa suddenly pointed at Claire.

"You think you've won?"

"You only own the company because of inherited money."

"I built Adrian's success."

Claire almost pitied her.

"No."

She replied softly.

"My father saved this company."

"I protected it."

"You nearly destroyed it."

Minutes later, corporate security escorted Vanessa from the executive floor.

This time, nobody followed her.

Nobody defended her.

May you like

Nobody even looked in her direction.

Power had changed hands without a single raised voice.
