CHAPTER 1: The Shadow That Was Not an Accident

CHAPTER 1: The Shadow That Was Not an Accident

The chandelier didn’t fall by itself.

That was the first thing Dominic said.

The second thing he did was kill the music.

Not literally—but the string quartet stopped the moment his hand lifted. Silence swallowed the ballroom like a closed fist.

Grace stood frozen beside Margaret’s wheelchair, her heart still racing from the impact that hadn’t fully happened yet.

Security teams rushed in, scanning ceilings, rigging, exits.

One of them shouted: “Cable was cut. Clean. Intentional.”

Vivian Whitmore—already removed from the room—was screaming about lawsuits somewhere behind the doors.

But Dominic wasn’t listening.

He was staring upward, then slowly scanning the crowd.

Like he was counting ghosts.

“No panic entry,” he ordered. “Nobody leaves alone.”

A federal agent in the corner hesitated. “Mr. DeLuca, this is now a criminal scene—”

Dominic stepped closer.

“And I said nobody leaves alone.”

The agent went quiet.

Not because he agreed.

Because he understood.

Margaret reached out and touched Grace’s hand.

“You pushed me,” she said softly.

Grace shook her head. “It was instinct.”

“No,” Margaret replied. “It was choice.”

That word landed heavier than the chandelier had.

Dominic finally looked at Grace properly.

Not as a waitress.

Not as an accident.

But as a variable.

“You were standing in the exact angle of impact,” he said slowly. “That means whoever did this either miscalculated…”

He paused.

“…or you were not the target.”

Grace felt her stomach drop.

“What does that mean?”

Dominic didn’t answer immediately.

May you like

Because for the first time that night, something unfamiliar flickered in his eyes.

Uncertainty.
