Chapter 2: The Pattern

Chapter 2: The Pattern

The woman stepped forward slowly.

Her name was Evelyn Hart.

Most guests knew her as a respected philanthropist.

But Margaret recognized her immediately.

Because twenty-two years earlier, Evelyn had walked into her shop carrying a newborn child.

And tears in her eyes.

"Evelyn..." Margaret whispered.

The older woman could barely speak.

"My daughter."

The room froze.

Evelyn reached toward the torn lace.

Her fingers traced a delicate floral pattern hidden among the stitching.

A pattern nobody else would recognize.

But she did.

Because she had designed it herself.

Years ago.

For her baby girl.

The daughter she believed was dead.

The guests exchanged confused looks.

"What is she talking about?" someone whispered.

Evelyn's voice cracked.

"There was a fire."

Twenty-two years earlier, a hospital evacuation during a massive fire had separated her from her infant daughter.

Records were destroyed.

The baby disappeared.

Despite years of searching, no trace was ever found.

Authorities eventually declared the child deceased.

Evelyn never stopped grieving.

Never stopped wondering.

Never stopped hoping.

Then she looked directly at Vanessa.

And noticed something.

A small birthmark behind her left ear.

A crescent-shaped mark.

Evelyn's knees nearly gave out.

"No..."

Vanessa touched her ear instinctively.

The same birthmark she had carried her entire life.

The same mark listed in the missing infant report from twenty-two years ago.

The room went silent.

Margaret began to cry.

Because she suddenly understood why fate had brought the dress back.
