CHAPTER 1: The Wedding They Thought They Controlled

CHAPTER 1: The Wedding They Thought They Controlled

The Sterlings believed money could solve any problem.

They were wrong.

Money could buy silence.

Money could buy fear.

Money could even buy loyalty.

But it could not erase evidence.

And it certainly could not save a man who walked willingly into a trap.

Three days before the wedding, Lily sat across from me in my apartment.

Her eyes were swollen from crying.

A laptop rested between us.

On the screen were dozens of files.

Emails.

Text messages.

Voice recordings.

Photos.

Threats.

Every ugly piece of Julian Sterling hidden behind the polished smile he showed the world.

Lily watched me open file after file.

"I should have left months ago," she whispered.

"No," I said calmly.

"You should have been safe months ago."

The distinction mattered.

Victims always blamed themselves.

Predators depended on it.

Julian's voice filled the room.

Cold.

Arrogant.

Confident.

"Your family survives because my father allows it."

Another file.

"If you embarrass me, I'll make sure your parents lose everything."

Another.

"Nobody will believe bruises over a Sterling."

Lily looked away.

I did not.

I listened to every second.

Every threat.

Every confession.

Every mistake.

When the recording ended, I picked up my phone.

"Who are you calling?" Lily asked.

"A friend."

The call connected after one ring.

"United States Attorney's Office."

I smiled slightly.

"Hello, David."

There was a brief pause.

Then:

"Eleanor."

May you like

His voice immediately changed.

"What did the Sterlings do this time?
