Chapter 1 – The Dance Floor

The orchestra stopped mid-song.

Crystal chandeliers glittered overhead as more than three hundred guests stared at the center of the ballroom.

A little boy, no older than nine, stood frozen in tears.

Across from him stood a woman dressed entirely in black.

Elegant.

Composed.

Unmoving.

Her gloved hand gripped the boy's wrist just tightly enough to keep him from running.

No one stepped forward.

Not because they didn't care.

Because everyone knew who the boy's family was.

The Ashcrofts.

One of the most powerful dynasties in New York.

Then the woman spoke.

"Tell them what your grandfather ordered you to say."

The boy shook his head violently.

"I can't."

"You can."

May you like

"He'll punish my mom."

The room fell silent.
