CHAPTER 4 — The Name That Started a War
Two hours later, the surgery was over.
Rachel was alive.
The twins were alive.
But nothing about what came next felt like survival.
She woke in a recovery room that felt too quiet after everything she had endured. Machines beeped steadily. Soft light replaced surgical brightness.
For a moment, she thought it had all been a dream.
Then she saw him.
Adrian Blackwood, standing near the window, phone pressed to his ear.
“I want every transaction reversed,” he said coldly. “Every account restored. Every asset returned.”
A pause.
Then:
“No. Not in weeks. Now.”
Another pause.
Then his voice dropped lower.
“And find the husband.”
Rachel’s throat tightened.
Bradley.
The name hit her like poison even from a distance.
Adrian ended the call and turned toward her.
Their eyes met.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then Rachel whispered, “You said he works for you.”
Adrian nodded once.
“Yes.”
Her voice broke slightly. “Then why did he do this to me?”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“That,” he said quietly, “is what I intend to find out.”
A beat.
Then, more dangerous than anything before:
“And why he thought I wouldn’t notice.”
Rachel stared at him.
“What are you going to do?”
Adrian’s gaze didn’t move from her face.
“Fix what he broke,” he said.
A pause.
May you like
Then, colder:
“And make sure he never has the chance to break anything again.”
