Chapter 3: The Return of Hawthorne

Chapter 3: The Return of Hawthorne

By morning, the estate was no longer hosting a feast.

It was hosting a reckoning.

Lawyers arrived before the guests woke.

So did investigators.

So did a sealed court order that had been activated for the first time in twenty years.

Emma stood in the garden, watching the sunrise over the lake, still wearing her chef’s coat.

Ethan stood beside her.

“You don’t have to decide anything today,” he said.

She laughed softly.

“I don’t even know what there is to decide.”

A pause.

Then:

“Do I go back to a life I don’t remember?”

Ethan looked at her carefully.

“No,” he said. “You choose whether you want to start one.”

Behind them, Lady Margaret was being escorted out of the estate.

No shouting this time.

Just silence.

Because power didn’t help her anymore.

Emma turned the silver spoon in her hands.

“The woman who raised me,” she said quietly, “she always said I was nobody special.”

Ethan shook his head.

“She was wrong.”

A long silence passed between them.

Then Emma asked the question she had never dared to ask before.

“…If I am her daughter…”

Her voice faltered.

“Why did she let me go?”

Ethan didn’t answer immediately.

Because he already knew the worst part.

The custody war hadn’t just taken a child.

It had erased her existence so completely that even her mother had been forced to believe she was gone.

And somewhere out there—

someone had built an entire lie to keep her hidden.

Ethan finally spoke.

“Because someone didn’t want the Hawthorne line to continue through you.”

Emma’s grip tightened on the spoon.

And for the first time—

her past didn’t feel like emptiness.

May you like

It felt like something waiting to be reclaimed.

THE END
