CHAPTER 2: The Necklace That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 2: The Necklace That Changed Everything

The ballroom fell silent.

The wealthy guests who had been sipping champagne only moments earlier now stared at the little girl kneeling on the marble floor.

She was desperately gathering the scattered pearls with trembling hands.

"No..."

"Please don't step on them..."

Tears streamed down her cheeks.

"They're all I have left of my mommy."

The young man crouched beside her.

His name was Adrian Sterling.

He gently picked up one pearl that had rolled beneath a nearby chair.

As he brushed away the dust, something caught his eye.

A tiny silver cap covered one end of the pearl.

Engraved into the metal was a symbol he had seen his entire life.

A soaring falcon surrounded by an olive branch.

The Sterling family crest.

His heart skipped.

He stared at the pearl.

Then at the little girl.

"Where did you get this?"

The girl sniffled.

"My mommy gave it to me."

"When?"

"Before she went to heaven."

The room became painfully quiet.

Adrian's voice shook.

"What was your mother's name?"

The girl looked up with innocent eyes.

"Anna."

The pearl slipped from Adrian's fingers.

His late mother had often spoken about a younger sister named Anna.

She had disappeared decades earlier after a bitter inheritance dispute.

No one in the family had ever found her.

Adrian slowly whispered,

"Anna Sterling?"

The little girl nodded.

"Mommy said our last name used to be Sterling."

Adrian felt the world tilt beneath him.

He slowly stood.

Then turned toward the elegant woman in the emerald-green gown.

His aunt.

Victoria Sterling.

The woman who had ripped the necklace from the child's neck.

His voice echoed across the ballroom.

"She's my sister."

Gasps filled the room.

Victoria's face turned white.
