CHAPTER 3: The Lie That Lasted Twenty Years

CHAPTER 3: The Lie That Lasted Twenty Years

"No," Victoria whispered.

"That's impossible."

Adrian took a slow step toward her.

"You knew."

She shook her head too quickly.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

The family's elderly attorney suddenly stood from the head table.

His expression was heavy with regret.

"I do."

Every eye turned toward him.

Twenty years earlier, after the death of Adrian's grandfather, the Sterling estate had become the center of a fierce legal battle.

Anna—the youngest daughter—had fallen in love with a schoolteacher from a poor family.

Victoria considered him beneath the Sterling name.

Afraid that Anna's marriage would divide the inheritance, Victoria secretly forged documents claiming Anna had voluntarily surrendered her rights to the family estate.

When Anna refused to leave quietly, Victoria spread false stories that she had stolen money and disappeared.

Ashamed and heartbroken, Anna left with her husband.

She never returned.

Years later, after her husband died and illness consumed what little money remained, she raised her daughter alone.

Before passing away, she gave the little girl the pearl necklace.

"One day," she had whispered,

"Someone will recognize this."

Victoria buried her face in her hands.

"I never thought..."

The attorney interrupted gently.

"You never thought the truth would come back."

The ballroom remained silent.

The necklace had done what decades of searching never could.

It had brought a lost family home.
