Chapter 10 – The Seventy-Two Hour Deadline

Chapter 10 – The Seventy-Two Hour Deadline
There are moments in life when a person reveals exactly who they are.
Not when they are winning.
Not when everyone is praising them.
But when they are cornered.
The Holloways had spent decades building an image of perfection.
The elegant mansion.
The charity galas.
The expensive suits.
The carefully chosen words.
They believed their reputation was a shield.
But shields only matter when they are strong.
And theirs was beginning to crack.
The Press Conference
The Holloway press conference was scheduled for noon.
By eleven thirty, every major news station had gathered outside their corporate headquarters.
Cameras.
Reporters.
Microphones.
Everyone wanted to hear what Grant Holloway had to say.
Jonathan watched the live feed from my diner.
Hannah stood beside him.
Her hands were shaking.
"You don't have to watch this," I told her.
She shook her head.
"No."
Her eyes stayed on the screen.
"I spent two years watching them control my life."
She took a breath.
"Today, I watch them explain themselves."
The Perfect Performance
At exactly noon, Grant walked onto the stage.
Dark suit.
Blue tie.
A serious expression.
The same expression he had used at charity dinners.
The same expression he used when pretending to care.
"My family has been the victim of a calculated attack."
The words appeared immediately across the news.
Hannah whispered:
"He practiced that."
Jonathan nodded.
"Probably for days."
Grant continued.
"My wife and I have always supported our community. We have always acted with integrity."
I almost laughed.
Integrity.
A word often used by people trying hardest to prove they have it.
The Attack on Hannah
Then came the part we expected.
Grant looked directly into the cameras.
"Unfortunately, there are people who use personal difficulties to create false narratives."
Hannah's face changed.
"He is talking about me."
Jonathan nodded.
"He wants the public to question your credibility."
Grant continued.
"My wife welcomed Hannah into our family. We gave her opportunities. We provided a life she could never have had otherwise."
The words were polite.
But the message was clear.
She was nothing before them.
She should be grateful.
The Old Version of Hannah
For a moment, I saw it.
The old Hannah.
The woman who sat silently at dinner while Margaret criticized her.
The woman who apologized for being tired.
The woman who thought wealth made people more important.
Her eyes lowered.
I reached over and held her hand.
"Don't listen to him."
She whispered:
"I used to believe them."
"I know."
"I thought maybe I wasn't enough."
I looked at her.
"You were never the problem."
The Unexpected Interruption
Then something happened.
Something nobody expected.
A reporter stood up.
"Mr. Holloway."
Grant stopped.
"Yes?"
The reporter held up a document.
"Can you explain these financial records?"
The room changed.
Grant's expression froze.
"What records?"
"Payments connected to Holloway Family Foundation accounts."
The reporters immediately started shouting questions.
Grant looked toward his assistant.
Confusion.
Fear.
Only for a second.
But the cameras caught it.
The First Crack
The reporter continued.
"We have documents showing several charitable donations were followed by business agreements benefiting Holloway Select Markets."
Grant smiled.
A fake smile.
"That is a misunderstanding."
"Is it?"
The reporter raised another paper.
"Because these agreements appear to involve companies owned by relatives of people who later supported Holloway business decisions."
The room exploded.
Questions everywhere.
Grant tried to regain control.
But the moment had already happened.
People had seen fear.
And powerful people hate when the world sees them afraid.
Margaret's Rage
Inside the mansion, Margaret watched the broadcast.
Her hand tightened around her glass.
"They are supposed to fear us."
She threw the remote across the room.
Grant entered.
"You knew this could happen."
Margaret turned.
"Watch your tone."
"You hid things from me."
"I protected you."
"You protected yourself."
For the first time in years, mother and son were not pretending.
The illusion of family loyalty disappeared.
The Final Warning
That evening, Grant sent me a message.
Not a lawyer.
Not a threat through someone else.
Him.
You have forty-eight hours to withdraw your accusations.
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
If you continue, your diner will be gone. Your daughter will lose everything.
Hannah saw it.
"He is still threatening us."
I handed her the phone.
"Yes."
She looked at me.
"What are we going to do?"
I smiled.
"Something he doesn't expect."
The Hidden Recording
Jonathan arrived an hour later.
He carried a small device.
"We found something."
"What?"
He placed it on the table.
"A recording."
Hannah looked confused.
"Of what?"
"Grant."
My heart stopped.
"When?"
"Two years ago."
Jonathan pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Grant's voice.
Cold.
Careless.
"If she complains, remind her who gave her this life."
Hannah covered her mouth.
Another voice.
Margaret.
"She will never leave."
Grant laughed.
"Where would she go?"
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
The Daughter Understands
Hannah sat silently.
Then she whispered:
"He never loved me."
I sat beside her.
"No."
She wiped her tears.
"He loved having control."
Jonathan nodded.
"And now he is losing it."
Hannah looked at the recording.
"Can this destroy them?"
Jonathan answered carefully.
"It can help."
"But?"
"But powerful people rarely fall from one thing."
He looked at the documents around us.
"They fall when everything catches up at once."
The Seventy-Two Hour Deadline Returns
The next morning, Grant made his final move.
A letter arrived.
No lawsuit.
No lawyer.
Just a handwritten note.
Seventy-two hours.
The same words he had spoken outside the mansion.
Bring Hannah back.
Make her apologize.
Or lose everything.
Hannah read it.
Then she folded it neatly.
I watched her.
"What are you doing?"
She placed it on the table.
"I'm keeping it."
"Why?"
"So I remember something."
"What?"
She looked at me.
"The first time he gave me seventy-two hours, I was afraid."
A small smile appeared.
"This time, he should be."
The Board Meeting
That afternoon, Grant walked into an emergency board meeting.
He expected support.
He expected loyalty.
Instead, he found silence.
The chairman looked at him.
"Grant."
"Yes?"
"We have concerns."
His face hardened.
"About what?"
The chairman placed documents on the table.
"Your personal conduct."
Grant stared.
"What does that mean?"
"It means the board is considering removing you temporarily."
For the first time...
Grant Holloway looked powerless.
The Woman They Underestimated
That night, I stood outside Carter's Table.
The city lights reflected against the wet pavement.
Hannah joined me.
"Mom?"
"Yes?"
"Do you think we can really win?"
I looked at my daughter.
The woman who had survived the Holloways.
The woman who had finally found her voice.
"I think something more important already happened."
"What?"
"You stopped letting them decide who you are."
She smiled.
Behind us, the diner lights glowed.
Small.
Simple.
Honest.
Everything the Holloways were not.
The Final Hours Begin
At midnight, the clock started counting down.
Twenty-four hours remained.
Grant had one final plan.
Margaret had one final secret.
And somewhere hidden inside the documents Thomas Carter left behind...
Was the evidence that could end the Holloway empire forever.
But before the truth could come out...
The Holloways were about to make their most dangerous mistake.
They were going to attack Hannah one last time.
And this time...
She would be ready.
