Chapter 6 – The Holloway Empire Begins to Crack

Chapter 6 – The Holloway Empire Begins to Crack

The powerful always believe their empire is built on stone.

They look at their buildings.

Their bank accounts.

Their names carved into charity walls.

They see something permanent.

Something untouchable.

But they forget one thing.

Every empire is held together by people.

And people have one weakness money cannot completely control.

Fear.

Once people stop being afraid...

The cracks begin.

The First Crack

Grant Holloway woke up believing he had won.

That was the kind of confidence wealth created.

He sat in his office on the thirty-second floor of Holloway Select headquarters, looking over the city through a wall of glass.

Below him, Chicago moved like it always did.

Cars.

People.

Business.

Life.

Everything continued.

That comforted him.

Because men like Grant believed the world only changed when they allowed it to.

His assistant Colin entered carrying a tablet.

"Good morning, sir."

Grant didn't look away from the window.

"Tell me the damage."

Colin hesitated.

That hesitation immediately annoyed him.

"Well?"

"The article worked."

Grant smiled.

"Of course it did."

"But..."

There was that word again.

Grant turned.

"But what?"

Colin placed the tablet on the desk.

"There are problems."

Grant picked it up.

The first thing he saw was not a business report.

It was a message.

A social media post.

From an old Holloway employee.

I worked for this family for eleven years. What happened to Hannah Holloway is not surprising. This is how they operate.

Grant's smile disappeared.

"Who posted this?"

"We're investigating."

"Investigating?"

His voice sharpened.

"I want it removed."

"We tried."

"And?"

Colin swallowed.

"They already shared screenshots."

Grant stared at the screen.

One post.

Then another.

Then another.

Former employees.

Former business partners.

People who had stayed silent for years.

Until now.

The Woman Behind the Posts

At Carter's Table, I watched the same messages appear.

One after another.

Jonathan sat across from me.

"Who started this?"

I shook my head.

"I don't know."

He looked at the screen.

"I do."

I looked at him.

"Who?"

Jonathan pointed.

"Rebecca Miller."

The name from the past.

The woman who had survived the Holloways.

"The files she had..."

Jonathan nodded.

"She didn't just collect evidence."

"What did she do?"

"She collected people."

The Forgotten Victims

By afternoon, my diner was no longer just a restaurant.

It became a meeting place.

Women arrived quietly.

Some wearing expensive coats.

Some wearing simple jackets.

Different lives.

Same story.

A woman named Rebecca arrived first.

I recognized her immediately.

She looked nothing like the person Grant probably remembered.

The woman in front of me was not broken.

She was tired.

But standing.

"I never thought I'd come back here."

I offered her coffee.

"Why now?"

She looked around the diner.

"Because your daughter reminded me of myself."

Hannah looked up.

Rebecca continued.

"I was twenty-nine when I married into their world."

"What happened?"

She smiled sadly.

"The same thing that happened to Hannah."

Control.

Isolation.

Fear.

At first, they made everything look like love.

Then slowly...

They changed the rules.

The Pattern

Rebecca opened a folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Emails.

"This is every woman who tried to leave."

Hannah looked through them.

Her face changed.

"There are so many."

Rebecca nodded.

"Because Grant and Margaret don't see people."

"What do they see?"

"Assets."

The word stayed in the room.

Assets.

Not wives.

Not daughters.

Not family.

Assets.

The Business Side

Jonathan spent the afternoon reviewing Holloway Select's records.

Then he found something.

"Evelyn."

I looked up.

"What?"

"Their company is not as strong as they pretend."

I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"They have debt."

"How much?"

"A lot."

Hannah looked surprised.

"But they're billionaires."

Jonathan shook his head.

"Paper wealth."

He explained.

The Holloway empire depended heavily on investors believing everything was perfect.

Their image.

Their reputation.

Their appearance of success.

If people stopped believing...

The money started disappearing.

Grant's Panic

Inside the Holloway headquarters, the mood changed.

For the first time in years...

Employees saw something they had never seen before.

Grant Holloway was worried.

His father had built the company on one rule:

Never let people see weakness.

But now weakness was everywhere.

A supplier requested a meeting.

An investor asked questions.

A reporter contacted the company.

And worst of all...

The charity board that Margaret loved so much announced they were reviewing her position.

That was the one thing that truly frightened her.

Not losing money.

Losing respect.

Margaret's Solution

"You need to destroy Evelyn Carter."

Grant looked at his mother.

"We tried."

"Then try harder."

She stood by the fireplace.

"Find something."

"There is nothing."

"There is always something."

Grant looked frustrated.

"What if there isn't?"

Margaret turned.

Her eyes became cold.

"Then create something."

The room went silent.

Grant understood.

Because this was how they survived.

Not by defending themselves.

By attacking first.

The Missing Piece

That night, Jonathan found something hidden in Thomas Carter's old files.

A handwritten note.

Not from Thomas.

From Richard Holloway.

Grant's father.

The note was only one sentence.

But it changed everything.

The Carter evidence must never reach the public.

Jonathan stared at it.

Then looked at me.

"Evelyn."

I walked closer.

"What?"

"Your husband wasn't just investigating them."

"Then what was he doing?"

Jonathan handed me the note.

"He was closer to destroying them than anyone realized."

Hannah's Choice

That evening, Hannah stood in the diner kitchen.

The same kitchen where she had grown up.

The same place where she used to sit on the counter while I cooked.

"I'm scared."

I looked at her.

"I know."

"What if they win?"

I put down the dish towel.

"Then we fight again."

"What if they hurt us?"

"They already did."

She looked at me.

"And we're still standing."

A small smile appeared.

For the first time since she left the Holloway mansion...

My daughter looked like herself again.

The Warning

Before leaving that night, Rebecca stopped me.

"Evelyn."

I turned.

"They will come after you."

"I know."

"No."

Her voice became serious.

"You don't understand."

She stepped closer.

"When they realize fear doesn't work..."

She paused.

"They become dangerous."

I looked at her.

"Are you telling me to run?"

Rebecca shook her head.

"No."

"What then?"

"Prepare."

The Crack Becomes a Break

At midnight, Grant Holloway received an email.

One sentence.

No signature.

No explanation.

Just a warning.

The people you buried are standing up.

He stared at the message.

Then another arrived.

Then another.

Former employees.

Former partners.

Former victims.

All speaking.

All remembering.

For the first time in his life...

Grant felt something he hated.

Powerlessness.

He grabbed the phone and called his mother.

"We have a problem."

Margaret answered immediately.

"What happened?"

Grant looked at the city below.

"The empire is cracking."

A long silence followed.

Then Margaret said:

"Then make sure everyone falls with it."

And that was the moment the war changed.

Because until then...

The Holloways had been fighting to win.

Now...

They were fighting to survive.
