CHAPTER 1: The Silence After the Command
Nobody moved.
The words “This wedding is canceled” still echoed under the crystal chandelier, as if the ballroom itself refused to forget them.
The mother-in-law’s lips trembled.
“That’s impossible… you can’t just—”
The woman raised a hand slightly.
Not a gesture of anger.
A gesture of control.
And the room obeyed.
The groom slowly stood, still pale, still shaken.
“Madam Chairwoman… I should have recognized you immediately.”
A murmur spread through the guests like fire catching dry paper.
The bride’s voice broke through, sharp and desperate.
“Someone explain what is happening!”
No one answered her.
Because everyone suddenly understood they were in the presence of someone they should have never touched.
The cleaning cloth lay on the marble floor.
The woman looked at it for a moment… then stepped over it.
“I came here quietly,” she said. “That was my mistake.”
