CHAPTER 3: THE PERFORMANCE THAT NO ONE FORGOT

CHAPTER 3: THE PERFORMANCE THAT NO ONE FORGOT

The music teacher slowly stepped backward.

His confidence had vanished.

"I... I didn't know."

The composer folded the letter carefully.

"No."

"You didn't care to know."

He turned toward the audience.

"Every person in this room laughed at a child before hearing her voice."

No one answered.

The students lowered their heads.

The wealthy patrons looked away.

The old man smiled gently at Lily.

"Would you play with me?"

She looked frightened.

"I've never had lessons."

"You already have something lessons cannot teach."

He placed her tiny hands on the piano.

Then sat beside her.

Blind fingers found the keys with quiet certainty.

Lily hesitated.

Then played the melody her mother had sung every night before bed.

Simple.

Gentle.

Beautiful.

The composer joined her.

Their music filled every corner of the hall.

Somewhere between the first note and the last...

The audience stopped seeing a barefoot orphan.

They saw a little girl carrying the final gift her mother had left behind.

When the piece ended...

No one applauded immediately.

Many were crying too hard.

Then the entire hall rose to its feet.

May you like

Not for the famous composer.

For Lily.
