CHAPTER 2: THE CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The ballroom was still vibrating from the slap.

Not physically.

Socially.

That kind of silence where everyone is waiting for someone else to decide what reality is supposed to be.

My daughter’s tiny fingers were still wrapped around my sleeve. Food dripped from her hair onto the polished marble floor. She wasn’t crying loudly anymore—just small, broken breaths like she was trying not to take up space.

Margaret stood a few feet away, untouched, unbothered.

Like she had simply corrected a mistake.

My husband hadn’t moved back.

He hadn’t apologized.

He was still standing where he had struck me, his chest rising and falling too fast, as if he expected applause for obedience.

“Don’t you dare undermine my mother,” he said coldly.

That sentence didn’t hurt like the slap.

It clarified everything.

I looked at him for a long moment.

Not angry.

Not shocked.

Just finished trying to understand him.
