Chapter 2: What Claire Wouldn't Say

Chapter 2: What Claire Wouldn't Say
The ambulance doors closed.
Colonel Thomas Hale stood motionless until the siren disappeared beyond the estate gates.
Only then did he turn around.
Evan was still standing on the front steps.
For the first time since Thomas had known him, the young man looked frightened.
Not frightened of losing Claire.
Frightened of what she might eventually say.
Thomas walked toward him with the measured calm that had carried him through decades of military service.
"What happened?"
Evan swallowed.
"It was an accident."
Thomas didn't blink.
"What accident?"
Evan hesitated.
"We argued."
Helen stepped forward.
"That's not what I asked you upstairs."
Evan's shoulders slumped.
"I never meant to hurt her."
Thomas's voice remained even.
"I didn't ask what you meant."
"I asked what happened."
Before Evan could answer, a detective's vehicle pulled into the driveway.
The hospital had reported Claire's injuries as suspicious.
Standard procedure.
The detective asked everyone to remain available for questioning.
Thomas said only one thing.
"I'm going to my daughter."
At the hospital, doctors completed a full examination.
The bruises weren't consistent with a single fall.
Some were days old.
Others were weeks old.
One orthopedic specialist quietly told Thomas,
"These injuries occurred over time."
"There are signs of repeated trauma."
Thomas felt something inside him go cold.
Claire sat silently on the examination bed, wrapped in a hospital blanket.
When the room was finally empty, he pulled up a chair beside her.
"You don't have to protect anyone."
She stared at the floor.
"I know."
"Then tell me the truth."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I kept thinking each time would be the last."
Thomas reached for her hand.
"It rarely is."
She finally looked at him.
"The first time he apologized."
"The second time he cried."
May you like
"The third time..."
"He convinced me it was somehow my fault."
