He denied intentionally harming Claire, but the physical evidence and documented pattern of abuse contradicted his account.

She smiled gently.

He looked at the rows of ribbons before answering.

On the anniversary of the day he carried her out of that house, Thomas stood beneath the same medals hanging in his study.
Visitors often asked which decoration meant the most.
