Chapter 1: The Second Chance

Chapter 1: The Second Chance

Hours later, the operating room doors finally opened.

The surgeon stepped forward with a tired smile and removed his mask.

Before he could even speak, Sofia collapsed into tears.

"The surgery was successful."

The hallway seemed to exhale.

For a moment, Sofia couldn't stand. Months of fear, exhaustion, and helplessness poured out of her all at once.

"Thank you..." she whispered.

The surgeon nodded.

"Lucas is stable. The next few weeks will be important, but he's going to have a chance."

A chance.

The very thing she had been fighting for.

Across the hallway, Ricardo stood motionless.

Everyone else felt relief.

He felt something else.

Shame.

Because while Sofia celebrated the possibility of her son's future, Ricardo could not stop thinking about the past.

Three weeks earlier, he had seen a broken vase.

Nothing more.

Not a tired mother.

Not trembling hands.

Not silent suffering.

Just an inconvenience.

For the first time in his life, Ricardo realized how dangerous indifference could be.

Not cruelty.

Indifference.
