Chapter 2: The Crack in the Mirror

Chapter 2: The Crack in the Mirror
Brandon stood up so fast his chair scraped the floor.
“That’s illegal,” he snapped. “She wasn’t in her right mind.”
The lawyer didn’t react.
Neither did anyone else.
Because we all knew Grandma Eleanor better than that argument.
She had outlived three doctors who told her to slow down.
She had built her fortune while everyone underestimated her.
She was many things.
But she was never careless.
Brandon turned to me.
“You knew about this.”
It wasn’t a question.
It was an accusation.
I shook my head.
“No,” I said honestly. “But I knew she didn’t trust you.”
His face twisted.
“That’s not fair.”
A soft laugh slipped out of me before I could stop it.
“Brandon… you posted jewelry on Instagram before she was even buried.”
The room went still again.
His jaw tightened.
“You’re jealous,” he said quietly.
And for a second, I almost believed he meant it.
But then the lawyer spoke again.
“Actually,” he said, flipping one more page, “there is a supplementary instruction regarding that post.”
Brandon froze.
“What post?”
I didn’t answer.
I didn’t have to.
Because the lawyer already had the printed screenshot in his hand.
“Any premature public display of inherited items prior to legal transfer constitutes immediate breach.”
He looked at Brandon.
“And that breach occurred within six hours of the will being read.”
Brandon’s breath hitched.
“No…”
May you like
The lawyer continued calmly.
“Which means the redistribution clause is now active.”
