Chapter 10 — What Julian Really Knew

Chapter 10 — What Julian Really Knew
By midnight, Elena had stopped asking herself whether Julian had lied to her.
The answer was obvious.
The harder question was this:
How much of the truth had he known?
She sat alone in the library with her mother's black notebook open in front of her.
The pages were filled with dates, account numbers, names, meetings, and short notes written in a handwriting Elena remembered from childhood.
Her mother's handwriting.
Careful.
Precise.
Almost painfully calm.
But the final pages were different.
The letters became hurried.
Some words were crossed out.
Several names had been circled repeatedly.
And one name appeared on almost every page.
Julian Mercer.
Elena stared at it.
For nine years, she had believed Julian entered her life because he loved her.
She had believed their first meeting was accidental.
She had believed his ambition was simply ambition.
She had believed his obsession with expansion came from a desire to build something extraordinary.
Now every memory seemed contaminated.
Every dinner.
Every anniversary.
Every business trip.
Every conversation about her family.
Had he been asking questions?
Had he been collecting information?
Had he been preparing?
She turned another page.
A sentence stopped her.
Julian knows about the second structure.
Elena frowned.
Second structure.
She read the next line.
He believes it belongs to the family.
Then:
He is wrong.
Elena's fingers tightened around the page.
She turned another.
The real structure belongs to Elena.
Her breathing slowed.
Her mother had known.
Long before Julian.
Long before the gala.
Long before the night she was thrown out.
Her mother had planned for this.
But why?
Elena continued reading.
Then she found the name that made her stop.
Richard Vale.
Her father.
Beside it were three words.
He knows everything.
Elena closed the notebook.
For several seconds, she didn't move.
Then she picked up her phone.
She called her father.
Once.
No answer.
Twice.
No answer.
Three times.
Finally, someone answered.
Richard's voice was quiet.
"You found it."
Elena looked toward the dark windows.
"You knew."
A long silence.
"Yes."
"How much?"
"Everything."
Her eyes filled with anger.
"Then you have ten minutes."
"For what?"
"To tell me the truth."
Another silence.
"Elena..."
"Ten minutes, Dad."
She ended the call.
At 12:18 a.m., Richard entered the library.
He looked exhausted.
Older than he had that morning.
Elena remained seated.
The notebook lay between them.
"You knew my mother was alive."
Richard stopped.
"Yes."
"You knew four years ago."
"Yes."
"You knew Julian was looking for her."
"Yes."
Elena laughed bitterly.
"And you let me marry him?"
Richard's eyes closed.
"I tried to stop it."
"No."
"You didn't listen."
"You didn't tell me."
"Because your mother forbade me."
Elena stood.
"My mother was alive, and you let me believe she was dead."
"She wanted you protected."
"Protected?"
Elena's voice shook.
"From the truth?"
"From the people who wanted to use you."
She stared at him.
"Who?"
Richard looked away.
"Everyone."
"That's not an answer."
He finally looked at her.
"Your mother discovered something about the family."
"What?"
"That the Vale fortune wasn't built the way you were told."
Elena frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Richard walked toward the fireplace.
"Your grandfather didn't build the empire from nothing."
"I know."
"No."
He shook his head.
"You don't."
He took a breath.
"Your grandfather inherited the first properties."
Elena nodded.
"And expanded."
"With money that wasn't his."
She stared.
"Whose?"
Richard didn't answer.
"Who?"
"The Mercer family."
Elena froze.
"What?"
"Julian's family."
The room seemed to lose all sound.
Richard continued.
"Thirty years ago, Julian's father was one of the largest private lenders in the region."
Elena slowly sat down.
"He financed your grandfather's expansion."
"Why didn't I know?"
"Because the debt was settled."
"How?"
Richard looked at her.
"Your grandfather transferred equity."
Elena's eyes widened.
"To the Mercers?"
"Yes."
"Then why do we own the resorts?"
"Because the transfer was temporary."
"Temporary?"
Richard nodded.
"The Vale family retained the land."
He paused.
"The Mercers retained certain operating rights."
Elena stared at the notebook.
"The empire beneath the empire."
"Exactly."
She remembered Julian's words.
This is my resort.
He had believed operating rights were ownership.
But there was more.
Elena looked at her father.
"Why did Julian think he could take everything?"
"Because his father taught him that the Mercers had been cheated."
"And Julian believed him?"
"Completely."
"Why?"
"Because his father spent years telling him the Vale family stole their fortune."
Elena's face hardened.
"Did my grandfather?"
"No."
"Then who did?"
Richard didn't answer.
Elena stood.
"Who?"
Richard whispered:
"Your mother."
Elena stared at him.
"What?"
"She discovered that your grandfather had made a private agreement with Julian's father."
"Why?"
"To protect the family from bankruptcy."
"And she exposed it?"
"No."
Richard looked toward the fireplace.
"She renegotiated it."
Elena frowned.
"How?"
"She turned the debt into a trust."
Elena's heart began racing.
"The trust."
"Yes."
"That's why the Mercers couldn't claim ownership."
"Correct."
"But Julian knew."
"He knew part of it."
"What part?"
"Enough to become obsessed."
At 1:04 a.m., Julian sat in the back of an unmarked vehicle.
He had been released temporarily.
Not because the investigators trusted him.
Because they wanted to see where he went.
Julian knew that.
He also knew he had little time.
He looked at the city through the window.
Then at the envelope he had stolen from his apartment.
The letter from Elena's mother.
He read it again.
One sentence kept bothering him.
You were chosen to prove whether my daughter could recognize a man who wanted her for the wrong reasons.
What did that mean?
Had Elena's mother known he would marry her?
Had she known he would betray her?
Had she deliberately allowed him into the family?
Julian shook his head.
Impossible.
He had chosen Elena.
Not the other way around.
At least, that's what he had believed.
His phone rang.
A private number.
He answered.
"Hello?"
A woman spoke.
"Julian."
He froze.
He knew the voice.
He hadn't heard it in twelve years.
His mother.
"Mother?"
"Where are you?"
He couldn't speak.
"Julian."
"You're dead."
She laughed softly.
"No."
He stared at the window.
"Where are you?"
"Somewhere your father could never find me."
"Why are you calling?"
"Because you have finally done what I feared you would."
"What?"
"You married Elena."
Julian's blood ran cold.
"You knew?"
"I warned you."
"When?"
"Before you met her."
He closed his eyes.
Memories surfaced.
His mother sitting across from him.
A warning.
A photograph.
A name.
Elena.
At the time, he'd thought it was paranoia.
Now he remembered.
His mother had said:
Stay away from the Vale girl.
He hadn't listened.
"Why?"
His mother sighed.
"Because her mother knew what your father did."
Julian's voice became strained.
"What did he do?"
"He didn't lend the Vales money."
She paused.
"He bought their future."
Julian swallowed.
"What does that mean?"
"He wanted control of the land."
"Why?"
"Because he knew something about the Vale family."
"What?"
His mother's voice dropped.
"Your father knew Elena's mother wasn't who everyone believed she was."
Julian went silent.
"What?"
"She wasn't born a Vale."
His heart stopped.
"What are you talking about?"
"Ask Elena."
The line went dead.
Julian stared at his phone.
Then whispered:
"What the hell are you hiding?"
At 1:40 a.m., Elena turned another page.
She found a photograph.
Her mother standing beside a young woman.
Elena recognized the woman.
Her mother.
But younger.
Much younger.
And beside her was another woman.
A woman Elena had never seen.
Underneath the photograph:
My sister, Amelia.
Elena's heart stopped.
She read the note beneath it.
If anything happens to me, Elena must never be told about Amelia until she is ready.
She looked up.
"Dad."
Richard stood across the room.
"Who is Amelia?"
He didn't answer.
"Who?"
Richard's face changed.
"Your mother's sister."
"I didn't know she had a sister."
"Nobody did."
"Why?"
"Because she disappeared."
"When?"
"Before you were born."
"Where did she go?"
Richard shook his head.
"We don't know."
Elena stared at the photograph.
Then something clicked.
"Julian's mother."
Richard froze.
"What?"
"Julian's mother."
He stared at her.
Elena pointed to the photograph.
"Look at her."
Richard walked closer.
His face went pale.
"That's not Amelia."
"Then who?"
He looked at Elena.
"Your mother."
Elena frowned.
"No."
Richard shook his head.
"That's your mother."
"But the note says—"
He interrupted.
"Look at the date."
Elena did.
The photograph was dated twenty-seven years earlier.
She looked again.
The woman beside her mother was older.
Not Amelia.
Someone else.
Then Elena recognized the face.
Her stomach dropped.
It was Julian's mother.
Richard whispered:
"She was there."
"Why?"
"Because your mother was investigating Julian's family."
Elena stared at him.
"Before Julian was even born?"
Richard nodded.
"Yes."
The room went silent.
At 2:15 a.m., Julian arrived at the abandoned hotel.
It had been closed for six years.
No guests.
No staff.
No cameras.
Perfect.
He entered through a side door.
A woman waited in the dark.
Julian stopped.
"You."
Vivian stepped into the light.
He stared at her.
"How did you find me?"
"I know your hiding places."
He laughed.
"You don't know anything about me."
"I know enough."
"What do you want?"
"The truth."
"You had it."
"No."
She stepped closer.
"You lied to me."
"About what?"
"Everything."
Julian looked away.
Vivian pulled out the old envelope.
"You knew Elena's mother was alive."
His eyes hardened.
"Who told you?"
"Does it matter?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because if you know, you're in danger."
Vivian stared.
"Then tell me."
Julian sighed.
"I knew her mother was alive."
"When?"
"Before I married Elena."
Vivian's face changed.
"You knew?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't you tell Elena?"
"Because I was investigating her."
"For what?"
"The trust."
Vivian shook her head.
"That's not all."
Julian looked at her.
"No."
"What else?"
He hesitated.
Then:
"I was trying to find the second structure."
Vivian frowned.
"The one beneath the trust?"
"Yes."
"Did you find it?"
Julian looked at her.
"No."
"Then what did you find?"
His voice became quiet.
"Elena."
Vivian's expression changed.
"What do you mean?"
"The second structure wasn't an account."
He paused.
"It was her."
Vivian stared.
"I don't understand."
"Neither did I."
Julian looked toward the dark windows.
"Elena isn't just the beneficiary."
"What is she?"
"The legal anchor."
Vivian's face went pale.
"What does that mean?"
"It means every company, every trust, every land title and every control mechanism ultimately points back to her."
Vivian whispered:
"Then why did you marry her?"
Julian looked at her.
"Because I thought I could make her sign it away."
"And?"
He laughed bitterly.
"She never signed."
Vivian stared.
"Then you never had control."
Julian didn't answer.
At 3:00 a.m., Elena found the final page of her mother's notebook.
Only six words.
Julian knows. He always knew.
She stared at them.
Then another line beneath.
But he doesn't know everything.
Elena's heartbeat quickened.
She turned the page.
Blank.
She checked the previous page.
Nothing.
Then she noticed something.
The paper was thicker near the spine.
She carefully separated the pages.
A hidden compartment appeared.
Inside was a small USB drive.
No label.
No explanation.
Elena looked at Richard.
"What's this?"
"I don't know."
"Did you know it was there?"
"No."
She inserted it into the computer.
A single video file appeared.
No title.
Elena clicked it.
Her mother's face filled the screen.
Older.
Tired.
Alive.
Elena stopped breathing.
"Elena."
Her mother's voice.
Real.
Not a photograph.
Not a memory.
Her mother looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this, then I failed to keep you away from the truth."
Elena covered her mouth.
Richard looked away.
Her mother continued.
"Your father will tell you he was protecting you."
A pause.
"He wasn't."
Richard closed his eyes.
"He was protecting the family."
Elena looked at her father.
Her mother continued.
"And Julian will tell you he didn't know."
The screen paused.
Then her mother said:
"He did."
Elena's heart dropped.
"He knew about the trust."
"He knew about the ownership structure."
"He knew about my disappearance."
"And most importantly..."
Her mother leaned closer to the camera.
"He knew why I disappeared."
Elena whispered:
"Why?"
Her mother's expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
"I disappeared because someone inside our family tried to kill me."
The video stopped.
Elena stared at the black screen.
Nobody moved.
Then a second video began automatically.
Her mother appeared again.
This time, she looked directly at Elena.
"The person who ordered it..."
She paused.
"...was your father."
Elena turned toward Richard.
He was already crying.
She stood.
"You tried to kill her?"
Richard shook his head.
"No."
The video continued.
Her mother said:
"Don't believe him."
Elena froze.
Then her mother's final words appeared.
"Because if Richard tells you he didn't do it..."
A pause.
"...ask him who he hired."
The screen went black.
Elena looked at her father.
"Who did you hire?"
Richard couldn't answer.
Elena's voice broke.
"Who?"
He finally whispered:
"Julian."
Silence.
Elena stepped backward.
Her entire world seemed to move beneath her feet.
Julian hadn't entered her life by accident.
He hadn't merely wanted the empire.
He had been hired to find her mother.
He had discovered the trust.
He had discovered Elena.
And somewhere along the way, the assignment had become an obsession.
Elena looked at the notebook.
Then at the screen.
Then at her father.
"Did you know he would marry me?"
Richard's silence answered.
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
"Did you?"
Richard whispered:
"I never thought he would love you."
Elena stared at him.
"And when he did?"
Richard's voice broke.
"I became afraid."
"Of what?"
"That he would choose you over the family."
Elena laughed through her tears.
"He didn't."
Richard looked down.
"No."
Elena walked toward the door.
"Where are you going?"
"To find Julian."
"Why?"
She stopped.
Because now she knew the answer to the question that had haunted her for days.
What did Julian really know?
He knew everything.
He knew her mother's secret.
He knew the trust.
He knew the hidden ownership.
He knew the reason she had disappeared.
But there was one thing he apparently hadn't known.
One thing that could change everything.
Elena turned back.
"Because if Julian was hired by you..."
She looked at her father.
"...then someone else hired him before you did."
Richard's face went white.
Elena saw it.
He knew.
She stepped closer.
"Who?"
Richard said nothing.
"Who hired Julian first?"
Finally, he whispered a name.
"His mother."
Elena froze.
"Why?"
Richard looked toward the dark window.
"Because she wanted Julian to destroy the Vale family before they discovered what her husband had stolen."
Elena's blood ran cold.
"Stolen what?"
Richard answered:
"Not money."
He paused.
"The original ownership records."
Elena stared.
"Where are they?"
Richard looked at her.
"Julian has them."
At that exact moment, Elena's phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
One sentence.
You have twenty-four hours to find the original deed.
Then another.
Or your mother dies for real.
Elena stared at the screen.
Her mother.
Alive?
Impossible.
She looked at Richard.
He had seen the message.
His face was ashen.
Then the phone vibrated again.
A photograph appeared.
A woman sitting in a dark room.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakably alive.
Elena stopped breathing.
Her mother.
And beneath the photograph:
May you like
Julian isn't your greatest enemy.
He is the man standing between you and the person who is.
