Chapter 13 — Five Minutes

Chapter 13 — Five Minutes

Elena couldn't speak.

Her mother's eyes remained fixed on her.

Then slowly, almost unconsciously, Vivian's gaze dropped toward Elena's stomach.

Elena followed it.

Her heart began to pound.

"No."

Vivian didn't answer.

"Mom..."

"I'm sorry."

"No."

Elena stepped backward.

"You can't mean that."

"I do."

"I don't have a child."

Vivian's face tightened.

"Not yet."

Silence.

The words hung between them.

Not yet.

Elena looked at the photograph again.

The original deed.

The ancient signature.

Her grandmother's name.

And beneath it, a clause Elena had never seen before.

The Vale Estate shall pass to the first living descendant of Elena Vale.

She read it again.

Then again.

Her hands began to shake.

"My grandmother knew."

"She planned for the future."

"But why?"

"Because she knew what would happen if the family ever lost control."

Elena looked at her.

"And Julian?"

"Was never the final threat."

"Then who is?"

Vivian didn't answer.

A loud knock came from the front door.

Everyone froze.

Richard turned.

Marcus reached for his phone.

Another knock.

Harder.

Then the door opened.

Margaret rushed inside.

"Elena."

"What happened?"

"You have five minutes."

Elena frowned.

"For what?"

Margaret's face was pale.

"To decide whether you're going to save the empire..."

She swallowed.

"...or save your mother."

The room exploded into movement.

Richard stood.

"What happened?"

Margaret handed Elena a phone.

A live video was already playing.

A dark room.

A chair.

A woman tied to it.

Elena's blood turned cold.

Her mother.

She turned.

Vivian was standing beside her.

"That's not me."

Elena looked back at the screen.

The woman in the video was older.

Gray hair.

Thin face.

But unmistakable.

Her grandmother.

Elena dropped the phone.

"No."

Vivian stared at the screen.

"She was supposed to be dead."

Richard whispered:

"She is."

Margaret shook her head.

"Apparently not."

A countdown appeared.

04:59

04:58

04:57

Elena stared.

"What does this mean?"

Margaret's voice trembled.

"The person who sent this message wants the original deed."

Elena looked at the document.

"Why?"

"Because the deed names the final beneficiary."

"Me."

Margaret shook her head.

"No."

Elena frowned.

"The unborn descendant."

Elena's face went pale.

"You mean..."

Margaret nodded.

"Whoever controls the deed controls the inheritance."

Vivian whispered:

"And whoever controls the inheritance controls the empire."

The countdown continued.

04:32

Julian sat alone in the interrogation room.

He had been waiting for three hours.

No lawyer.

No investigator.

No one.

Then the door opened.

A woman entered.

Julian looked up.

His face went white.

"Mother."

She closed the door.

"Hello, Julian."

He stood.

"You've been alive."

"Yes."

"You knew about the deed."

"Yes."

"You knew Elena was the legal anchor."

"Yes."

"You knew I would marry her."

"I hoped you wouldn't."

Julian laughed bitterly.

"But you knew."

She sat down.

"I knew you were capable of becoming exactly like your father."

"And you let me."

"I watched."

"Why?"

"Because I needed proof."

"Proof of what?"

"That the Mercer family could never be trusted with the empire."

Julian stared at her.

"You used me."

She looked at him.

"Yes."

He stepped backward.

"Everyone used me."

"No."

She shook her head.

"You allowed yourself to be used."

Julian looked away.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message.

FIVE MINUTES.

He stared.

His mother noticed.

"What is it?"

He showed her.

Her expression changed.

"Who sent that?"

"I don't know."

She stood.

"Where is Elena?"

"I don't know."

"Then find her."

Julian laughed.

"Why?"

"Because she's in danger."

His smile disappeared.

"What did you do?"

"I didn't do anything."

"Then who?"

His mother looked terrified.

"Your father."

Julian froze.

"My father is dead."

"I know."

"Then who?"

She whispered:

"Someone using his name."

03:45

Elena stood in front of the original deed.

Her mother watched her.

"You can't give it to them."

"I can't let Grandma die."

"She may already be dead."

"No."

Elena shook her head.

"She's alive."

Richard stepped closer.

"Elena, listen to me."

She turned.

"You lied to me for twelve years."

"I know."

"You don't get to tell me what to do now."

Richard stopped.

Marcus spoke.

"There's another option."

Everyone looked at him.

"What?"

Marcus pointed to the deed.

"The clause."

Elena frowned.

"What about it?"

"The inheritance isn't activated by possession."

"What activates it?"

"Birth."

Elena's eyes widened.

"So they can't claim it yet."

"Correct."

"Then why do they want the deed?"

"Because they don't want the empire."

Marcus paused.

"They want you."

Elena felt a chill.

"Why?"

"Because if they control you..."

He pointed toward the deed.

"...they control the future heir."

Vivian stepped forward.

"Then the question isn't who owns the empire."

She looked at Elena.

"It's who controls the mother."

03:01

The screen flickered.

A new message appeared.

YOU HAVE THREE MINUTES.

Then:

BRING THE DEED TO THE OLD RESORT.

Elena looked at the map.

The old resort.

The place where her mother had hidden for twelve years.

The place where Julian had found them.

The place where the original trust had been created.

It was a trap.

Everyone knew it.

But Elena picked up the deed.

"I'm going."

Vivian grabbed her arm.

"No."

"If Grandma is alive..."

"She may not be."

"Then I'll find out."

Richard shook his head.

"You'll walk into their hands."

Elena looked at him.

"Then help me."

Richard stared.

"You want me to come?"

"Yes."

"For once, I want the truth beside me."

He nodded.

"I'll come."

Marcus stepped forward.

"So will I."

Vivian looked at Elena.

"Then I'm coming too."

Elena looked at all three.

"No."

Vivian frowned.

"You need someone who knows the building."

Elena looked at her mother.

"You know it."

Vivian nodded.

"Then stay here."

"What?"

Elena handed her the phone.

"If this is a trap, someone needs to monitor the feed."

Vivian understood.

"You want me to stay behind."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Elena looked into her mother's eyes.

"Because I just got you back."

She paused.

"I'm not losing you again."

02:14

The old resort stood beneath a black sky.

No guests.

No lights.

No music.

Just rain.

Elena entered through the main doors.

Richard followed.

Marcus behind them.

The building felt abandoned.

But Elena knew better.

Someone was watching.

She held the deed inside her coat.

Her phone vibrated.

SECOND FLOOR.

She walked upstairs.

The hallway was empty.

A door opened.

Inside was a dining room.

On the table was a single chair.

And a clock.

02:00

Elena stepped inside.

The door slammed shut behind her.

Richard tried the handle.

Locked.

Marcus rushed toward it.

"Elena!"

"I'm fine."

A voice came through the speakers.

"Are you?"

Elena looked around.

"Who are you?"

No answer.

The screen on the wall turned on.

Her grandmother appeared.

Alive.

Tied to a chair.

Blood on her forehead.

Elena's heart shattered.

"Grandma."

The woman looked at the camera.

Then at Elena.

"Don't give them the deed."

Elena stepped closer.

"Who are they?"

Her grandmother's eyes widened.

"Your mother knows."

Elena turned.

Her mother's voice came through the phone.

"Elena, listen to me."

"Mom?"

"Don't trust the video."

Elena froze.

"What?"

"Look at the left side of the screen."

Elena stared.

A shadow.

Someone was standing behind her grandmother.

Then the figure stepped forward.

Elena's breath stopped.

It was a man.

Older.

Gray hair.

A scar across his cheek.

Richard whispered:

"No."

Marcus stared.

"Impossible."

Elena looked at them.

"Who is he?"

Richard's face had gone completely white.

"Your grandfather."

Elena's heart stopped.

"But he's dead."

Richard whispered:

"Yes."

The man in the video smiled.

"No."

The voice came through the speakers.

"I've been alive for thirty years."

01:23

Elena couldn't move.

Her grandfather looked directly into the camera.

"Hello, Elena."

She stepped backward.

"You..."

He smiled.

"You've grown."

Richard shouted:

"Where is my mother?"

The old man laughed.

"Still protecting her."

"You were supposed to be dead."

"I needed everyone to believe that."

"Why?"

"Because the empire could not survive if they knew I was alive."

Elena stared at him.

"You created the trust."

"Yes."

"You created the deed."

"Yes."

"You named my future child as heir."

"Yes."

"Why?"

His expression became serious.

"Because I knew your father would eventually betray you."

Richard shouted:

"Don't listen to him!"

The old man smiled.

"Your father has always been afraid of the truth."

Elena turned toward Richard.

"What truth?"

Richard said nothing.

Her grandfather answered for him.

"The empire was never built with family money."

Elena frowned.

"Then what?"

"War money."

Silence.

"What does that mean?"

"Your great-grandfather made his fortune during a war."

Elena's face tightened.

"How?"

Her grandfather's expression hardened.

"By supplying both sides."

Elena stared.

The empire suddenly felt darker.

Much darker.

"And the Mercers?"

"They discovered it."

"That's why they wanted control?"

"No."

Her grandfather leaned closer to the camera.

"They wanted the records."

"What records?"

"The names."

Elena whispered:

"Whose names?"

"Every powerful family that profited."

The room went silent.

Her grandfather continued.

"Politicians."

"Bankers."

"Industrialists."

"Governments."

"Generations of secrets."

Elena understood.

"The empire wasn't just money."

"No."

"It was leverage."

"Exactly."

00:57

The clock continued.

Elena looked at the screen.

"Why bring me here?"

Her grandfather smiled.

"Because you're the only person who can unlock the archive."

"Which archive?"

"The one beneath this resort."

Marcus suddenly stepped forward.

"That's impossible."

Her grandfather looked at him.

"Marcus."

Marcus froze.

"You knew?"

"I knew everything."

Marcus looked at Elena.

"Don't open it."

Elena frowned.

"Why?"

"Because once it's opened, there's no going back."

Her grandfather laughed.

"That's why she must choose."

Elena looked at the deed.

"What happens if I refuse?"

The screen changed.

Her grandmother appeared again.

The camera moved closer.

A knife was pressed against her throat.

Elena gasped.

Her grandfather's voice became cold.

"Then she dies."

Richard stepped forward.

"No."

The clock showed:

00:42

Elena stared at her grandmother.

Then at the deed.

Then at her mother on the phone.

"Mom."

"I'm here."

"Tell me what to do."

Vivian's voice broke.

"Do not give him the deed."

"But Grandma will die."

"Your grandmother has survived thirty years."

Elena froze.

"What?"

Vivian continued.

"She survived because she knows how to survive."

Her grandmother looked at the camera.

Then smiled.

Elena understood.

The smile.

The same controlled expression her mother had always worn.

This wasn't a hostage begging to be rescued.

This was a woman waiting for Elena to understand something.

Elena looked closer.

At her grandmother's wrist.

A bracelet.

Three tiny stones.

Red.

Black.

White.

Elena remembered.

Her grandmother had worn that bracelet at every family gathering.

Always.

She had once told Elena:

"If you ever see three stones, look for the fourth."

Elena looked around the room.

There.

A painting.

Four stones.

Red.

Black.

White.

And one empty space.

She walked toward it.

Richard shouted:

"Elena, what are you doing?"

She ignored him.

She touched the painting.

A hidden panel opened.

Inside was a small device.

She pressed it.

The lights came on.

The doors unlocked.

The screen went black.

The clock stopped.

00:05

Silence.

Then the speakers exploded with static.

A voice screamed.

"NO!"

The old man's voice.

For the first time, he sounded afraid.

Elena smiled.

She finally understood.

The five minutes had never been about the deed.

They had been about finding the hidden control.

The trap wasn't built for Elena.

It was built for whoever thought she would panic.

And now the trap had closed.

The doors burst open.

Security teams rushed inside.

Not Julian's.

Not Richard's.

Family security.

The oldest division of the Vale estate.

The men who had answered only to one person.

Elena.

Her grandfather's voice came through the speakers.

"How?"

Elena looked at the hidden device.

"My grandmother taught me."

A second voice came through.

Her grandmother.

"Good girl."

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

The video screen changed.

The hostage image disappeared.

In its place was a live feed of the actual room where her grandmother was being held.

The guards surrounding her dropped their weapons.

The door opened.

Her grandmother stood.

Alive.

Unharmed.

The blood on her face had been fake.

Elena stared.

Then laughed.

"You're alive."

Her grandmother looked into the camera.

"Of course."

Richard sat down heavily.

Marcus covered his face.

Elena turned toward them.

"What just happened?"

Marcus answered.

"The old man wasn't your grandfather."

She froze.

"What?"

Marcus pointed at the screen.

"That man was an actor."

Elena stared.

"Then who arranged this?"

Marcus looked at her.

"Julian."

Silence.

Elena's heart stopped.

"What?"

"He built the trap."

"Why?"

"Because he knew someone was coming for the deed."

"Who?"

Marcus looked at Richard.

Richard's face collapsed.

"I don't know."

A voice came from the doorway.

"I do."

Julian stood there.

Everyone turned.

Elena stared.

"You?"

Julian stepped inside.

No guards.

No lawyers.

No handcuffs.

Just him.

He looked exhausted.

"I built the trap."

Elena's expression hardened.

"Why?"

"Because I finally realized I couldn't save myself."

He looked at her.

"But I could save you."

She laughed bitterly.

"After everything you've done?"

"I know."

"You expect me to trust you?"

"No."

He shook his head.

"I expect you to hate me."

"Then why?"

Julian looked toward the hidden device.

"Because whoever is behind this is much more powerful than I am."

Elena stared.

"Who?"

Julian's voice became quiet.

"The person who has been manipulating all of us."

He looked at Richard.

Then Vivian.

Then Marcus.

Finally Elena.

"The person who ordered your mother's disappearance."

Elena's blood ran cold.

"Who?"

Julian stepped closer.

"I don't know their name."

"Then how do you know?"

"Because they contacted me."

"When?"

"Tonight."

"What did they want?"

Julian looked at the clock.

Then at Elena.

"Five minutes."

Elena frowned.

"Five minutes for what?"

Julian handed her a phone.

On the screen was a message.

YOU HAVE FIVE MINUTES TO DECIDE.

Then:

KILL JULIAN...

Elena stared.

"...OR YOUR MOTHER DIES."

Her eyes widened.

Julian continued:

"I was given the same choice."

"And what did you choose?"

He looked at her.

"You."

Elena didn't know what to say.

For the first time since their marriage began, Julian had made a choice that gave him nothing.

No money.

No power.

No ownership.

No escape.

Only consequences.

Then another message appeared.

FOUR MINUTES.

Elena looked at Julian.

"Whoever sent this thinks we're still playing their game."

Julian nodded.

"Yes."

Elena closed her hand around the phone.

"Then let's stop playing."

The countdown continued.

03:59

And somewhere in the darkness beyond the resort...

someone was watching.

Someone who had been waiting thirty years.

Someone who knew the Vale family better than they knew themselves.

May you like

And someone who had just realized that Elena Vale was no longer afraid.

She was coming for them.
