Chapter 10 — The Original Sterling Heir

Chapter 10 — The Original Sterling Heir

The elevator doors locked with a heavy metallic click.

Evelyn stood frozen.

Her mother was alive.

Her brother was standing beside her.

And Samuel—the man who had served the Sterling family for decades—was smiling as though he had finally won a game that had taken twenty-eight years to finish.

Behind him stood six armed men.

No one moved.

Then Evelyn whispered the only thing she could think of.

“Samuel…”

He smiled.

“Yes?”

“You lied to us.”

“For a very long time.”

“You worked for my father.”

“I did.”

“You worked for Beatrice.”

“Occasionally.”

“You helped hide my mother.”

His smile disappeared.

“No.”

Evelyn frowned.

“No?”

“I didn't hide your mother.”

He glanced toward the older woman standing behind him.

“She hid herself.”

Evelyn looked at her mother.

Her face had aged.

Her hair was streaked with silver.

But the eyes were unmistakable.

The same eyes Evelyn remembered from childhood.

The same eyes that had watched her sleep.

The same eyes that had disappeared from her life twenty years ago.

“Mom…”

Her mother took a step forward.

Samuel raised his hand.

She stopped.

“Don't.”

Evelyn's expression hardened.

“Let her come to me.”

Samuel shook his head.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because there are things you still don't understand.”

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“Apparently, that's all anyone ever tells me.”

Samuel's gaze shifted toward Sebastian.

“You were never supposed to find your brother.”

Then toward Evelyn.

“And you were never supposed to learn that you were not the only Sterling heir.”

Evelyn frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Samuel smiled.

“The trust doesn't belong to you and Sebastian alone.”

Sebastian stepped forward.

“What are you talking about?”

Samuel looked almost amused.

“Your father had three children.”

Silence.

Evelyn stared at him.

“That's impossible.”

Samuel's smile widened.

“No.”

He looked toward her mother.

“It's merely inconvenient.”

Evelyn turned toward her mother.

“Is this true?”

Her mother couldn't look at her.

“Mom?”

A tear rolled down the woman's cheek.

“Yes.”

Evelyn's chest tightened.

“There was another child?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Her mother closed her eyes.

“I don't know.”

Samuel laughed softly.

“That's not entirely true.”

Evelyn turned sharply.

“You know where?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Samuel walked toward a large screen.

The monitor flickered.

A photograph appeared.

A boy.

Approximately twelve years old.

Dark hair.

Pale eyes.

The same unmistakable Sterling features.

Evelyn stared.

“Who is he?”

Samuel said nothing.

Sebastian stepped closer to the screen.

His face changed.

“I know him.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“From where?”

“He was raised with me.”

“Where?”

“The Black Serpent.”

Evelyn's stomach dropped.

Samuel nodded.

“Your third brother.”

Sebastian's voice became quiet.

“His name is Gabriel.”

Evelyn stared at the photograph.

“Gabriel Sterling.”

Samuel smiled.

“The original heir.”

Evelyn couldn't understand.

“Original?”

Samuel nodded.

“Before you.”

“Before Sebastian?”

“Yes.”

“Then why have we never heard of him?”

“Because your father erased him.”

Her mother suddenly spoke.

“He didn't erase him.”

Everyone looked at her.

“He protected him.”

Samuel's expression hardened.

“Don't rewrite history.”

“I know what happened.”

“You know what you were told.”

Her mother looked at Evelyn.

“I was pregnant before I married Thomas.”

Evelyn's eyes widened.

“What?”

Her mother swallowed.

“Gabriel was born before your father and I married.”

“Who was his father?”

Silence.

Samuel answered.

“Richard Sterling.”

Evelyn's eyes widened.

“Your father's older brother.”

Her mother nodded.

Gabriel was the son of Richard.

The blood of the original Sterling line.

But not Thomas's.

Samuel continued.

“Richard wanted Gabriel to inherit everything.”

“Then why didn't he?”

“Because Thomas discovered what Richard was planning.”

“And?”

“Thomas took Gabriel away.”

Evelyn looked at her mother.

“You gave him to Father?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To save him.”

Evelyn's voice cracked.

“You gave away your own child?”

Her mother began crying.

“I thought I was saving his life.”

Samuel interrupted.

“And Thomas believed he could control the situation.”

“What happened?”

“Richard found him.”

Sebastian stepped forward.

“That's when the Black Serpent began.”

Samuel nodded.

“Richard created the organization to retrieve Gabriel.”

Evelyn looked at the screen.

“And my father?”

“He tried to destroy it.”

“Why?”

“Because he wanted all three children protected.”

“Then why did he hide us?”

Samuel's eyes became cold.

“Because he knew the Sterling trust could only be activated when all three heirs were identified.”

Evelyn stared.

“All three?”

“Yes.”

“What happens if one heir dies?”

“The trust becomes permanently sealed.”

Sebastian whispered:

“So that's why they tried to kill us.”

Samuel nodded.

“Exactly.”

Evelyn looked at the armed men.

“Then why are we still alive?”

Samuel smiled.

“Because I need you alive.”

“What for?”

“The trust.”

“You said it requires all three heirs.”

“It does.”

“Then where is Gabriel?”

Samuel's smile disappeared.

“He's coming.”

A door opened behind him.

Footsteps echoed through the corridor.

Slow.

Measured.

A man entered.

He was perhaps thirty years old.

Tall.

Broad shoulders.

Dark hair.

His face was strikingly familiar.

Evelyn's heart stopped.

He looked like her father.

But there was something colder in his expression.

Something trained.

Something dangerous.

Gabriel looked at Evelyn.

Then Sebastian.

Then their mother.

For a long moment, nobody spoke.

Finally, he said:

“So these are my siblings.”

Evelyn couldn't answer.

Sebastian stared at him.

“You were alive.”

Gabriel smiled.

“Apparently.”

“Why didn't you find us?”

“I tried.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“What stopped you?”

Gabriel's eyes moved toward Samuel.

“Him.”

Samuel's face tightened.

“Careful.”

Gabriel laughed.

“You're still afraid of me.”

Samuel raised his gun.

“I'm not afraid of anyone.”

Gabriel stepped closer.

“You should be.”

The room became tense.

Evelyn suddenly understood.

Gabriel wasn't Samuel's prisoner.

He had been pretending.

“Gabriel…”

He looked at her.

“Don't trust him.”

“Why?”

“Because Samuel isn't the man controlling the Black Serpent.”

Samuel's eyes narrowed.

Gabriel continued.

“He's only the keeper.”

“The keeper of what?”

Gabriel pointed toward the wall.

A hidden panel opened.

Inside was a steel vault.

Samuel's face went pale.

“No.”

Gabriel smiled.

“The original Sterling archive.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“What is inside?”

“Everything.”

The vault opened.

Inside were dozens of files.

Bank accounts.

Property deeds.

Contracts.

Photographs.

Letters.

Birth certificates.

Death certificates.

Evelyn picked up one folder.

Her name.

She opened it.

Inside was her entire life.

Every school.

Every address.

Every financial transaction.

Every person she had ever trusted.

Her hands trembled.

“This is impossible.”

Gabriel took another file.

“This is Sebastian.”

Then another.

“Your mother.”

Then one labeled:

THOMAS STERLING — PRIVATE ARCHIVE.

Evelyn opened it.

The first page contained a handwritten confession.

She read aloud.

“I created the Sterling Trust to protect my children from the family that created me.”

Her breath caught.

The next sentence was worse.

“I knew Richard would eventually come for Gabriel.”

Another page.

“I knew the Black Serpent would eventually find Evelyn.”

Another.

“I knew Sebastian would be taken.”

Evelyn looked up.

“My father knew?”

Gabriel nodded.

“He knew everything.”

“Then why didn't he stop it?”

“Because he couldn't.”

“Why?”

Gabriel pointed to the final page.

Evelyn read it.

THE PERSON I TRUSTED MOST HAS ALREADY BETRAYED ME.

She looked at Samuel.

Samuel didn't move.

“Who?”

The answer was written underneath.

SAMUEL VALE.

Evelyn's blood turned cold.

Samuel's expression finally broke.

“Your father was paranoid.”

Gabriel laughed.

“No.”

He pulled another document from the vault.

A bank transfer.

Millions of dollars.

Sent from Samuel's account.

To an offshore company.

The beneficiary?

BLACK SERPENT HOLDINGS.

Evelyn looked at Samuel.

“You were working for them.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

Samuel smiled.

“Since before you were born.”

Her mother suddenly stepped forward.

“Samuel.”

He turned.

“You promised.”

“I promised nothing.”

“You said you would protect my children.”

Samuel laughed.

“I protected the Sterling name.”

“You destroyed it.”

“No.”

He looked at Evelyn.

“I perfected it.”

He reached for the folder containing the trust documents.

Gabriel moved instantly.

Samuel's men raised their weapons.

Sebastian stepped in front of Evelyn.

“Don't.”

Samuel looked around.

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

Three siblings.

Three heirs.

Standing together.

The very thing he had spent decades preventing.

Evelyn suddenly understood.

That was why he had needed them alive.

That was why he had brought them together.

He needed all three to activate the trust.

But there was one problem.

The trust required consent from every heir.

And Gabriel was refusing.

Samuel turned toward him.

“You don't have a choice.”

Gabriel smiled.

“Yes, I do.”

He pulled out a small device.

“I already transferred control.”

Samuel's face changed.

“Where?”

Gabriel looked at Evelyn.

“To her.”

Evelyn's phone vibrated.

A notification appeared.

STERLING FAMILY TRUST — PRIMARY AUTHORITY TRANSFER COMPLETE.

Her eyes widened.

“You transferred it to me?”

Gabriel nodded.

“You're the only one they never expected to control it.”

Samuel raised his weapon.

But before he could fire—

A gunshot exploded.

One of his own men fell.

Then another.

The remaining guards turned toward the corridor.

Chaos erupted.

Sebastian grabbed Evelyn.

“Run!”

Their mother followed.

Gabriel stayed behind.

Evelyn turned.

“Gabriel!”

“Go!”

Samuel shouted:

“You'll never escape!”

Gabriel looked at him.

“You already lost.”

Then the vault doors slammed shut.

Evelyn, Sebastian, and their mother ran through the underground passage.

They reached the surface.

Rain poured over them.

For the first time in twenty-eight years, all three Sterling heirs stood beneath the open sky.

Evelyn looked at Sebastian.

Then Gabriel.

Then their mother.

“We're together.”

Her mother began to cry.

“Yes.”

But Sebastian suddenly looked behind them.

“Where is Gabriel?”

Evelyn turned.

He wasn't there.

She ran back toward the entrance.

“Gabriel!”

No answer.

The building shook.

An explosion echoed underground.

Evelyn screamed.

“Gabriel!”

Sebastian grabbed her.

“It's collapsing!”

“I can't leave him!”

“We have to!”

Her mother pulled Evelyn into her arms.

Then another explosion.

The old hotel began collapsing.

Evelyn watched helplessly.

Her brother had appeared for only minutes.

And now he was gone.

Hours later, the police recovered the building.

Samuel was missing.

Gabriel was missing.

Several Black Serpent members had been arrested.

But there was no sign of either man.

Evelyn stood outside the ruins.

Sebastian stood beside her.

Their mother was wrapped in a blanket.

Then an investigator approached.

“We found something.”

Evelyn turned.

He handed her a small metal box.

Inside was a letter.

Her name was written on it.

She opened it.

Gabriel's handwriting.

Evelyn,

If you're reading this, I'm probably gone.

Don't look for me.

Not yet.

The trust is yours now.

But the Sterling Empire was never the real prize.

Evelyn's hands trembled.

She continued.

The Black Serpent was created to control the Sterling family.

But someone created the Black Serpent before Richard ever joined it.

Someone who has been hidden for decades.

She turned the page.

Only one sentence remained.

The man behind Samuel is still alive.

Evelyn looked up.

Sebastian read the final line.

His face went pale.

Because beneath Gabriel's signature was one name.

Thomas Sterling.

Evelyn stared at it.

Her father.

The man she had believed died twenty years ago.

The man who had supposedly been murdered.

The man whose grave she had stood beside that morning.

The man whose secrets had already destroyed her family once.

Sebastian whispered:

“He's alive.”

Their mother covered her mouth.

Evelyn looked toward the distant mountains.

And suddenly the impossible became terrifyingly plausible.

Her father had not died in the crash.

He had not been kidnapped.

He had not been rescued.

He had disappeared.

And if Gabriel was telling the truth, Thomas Sterling had been alive all these years.

Watching.

Waiting.

Controlling the empire from somewhere no one could find him.

Evelyn folded the letter.

Her grief had ended.

Now came something far more dangerous.

The search for the man who had started it all.
