Chapter 11 — The Empire Turns Against Her

Chapter 11 — The Empire Turns Against Her
By sunrise, Evelyn Sterling no longer owned an empire.
At least, that was what every headline claimed.
STERLING TRUST FROZEN.
HEIRESS ACCUSED OF FINANCIAL FRAUD.
BOARD MOVES TO REMOVE EVELYN STERLING.
FAMILY FORTUNE AT RISK AFTER UNDERGROUND SCANDAL.
She read the headlines from the breakfast table.
Her mother sat silently across from her.
Sebastian stood beside the window.
Neither spoke.
Evelyn placed her phone down.
“They moved quickly.”
Sebastian turned.
“They were waiting.”
“For what?”
“For the moment you became the legal owner.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
“The moment the trust transferred to you, every person who benefited from the old structure became your enemy.”
Her mother closed her eyes.
“I warned your father.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“About what?”
“That the empire would turn against whoever tried to change it.”
A bitter smile crossed Evelyn's face.
“Then they should have chosen someone easier to break.”
Her phone rang.
Her lawyer.
“Ms. Sterling, you need to come to the headquarters immediately.”
“Why?”
“The board has called an emergency meeting.”
“Who requested it?”
There was a pause.
“Seventeen directors.”
Evelyn's expression hardened.
“Seventeen?”
“Yes.”
“Who is leading them?”
Her lawyer hesitated.
“Samuel Vale.”
Evelyn stood.
“He's missing.”
“Apparently not.”
The Sterling Tower was surrounded by reporters.
Security barriers blocked the entrance.
Cameras flashed as Evelyn stepped out of the car.
Questions exploded around her.
“Ms. Sterling, did you steal from the family trust?”
“Did you know about the Black Serpent?”
“Was your father involved?”
“Where is Samuel Vale?”
“Are you responsible for the missing funds?”
Evelyn kept walking.
Then someone shouted:
“Did you murder your own father?”
She stopped.
The crowd went silent.
Evelyn slowly turned.
She looked directly into the camera.
“No.”
Then she continued toward the building.
But inside, the atmosphere was worse.
Employees whispered.
Executives avoided her.
Some bowed.
Others didn't.
A giant screen in the lobby displayed the company's official statement.
The Sterling Group denies all allegations of criminal activity and has initiated an independent investigation into Evelyn Sterling's recent assumption of trust authority.
Evelyn stared at it.
“They've already declared war.”
Sebastian nodded.
“They aren't investigating you.”
“They're trying to remove me.”
“Yes.”
Her mother looked around the lobby.
“This is how it began.”
Evelyn turned.
“What?”
“Your father tried to change the company once.”
“And?”
“They destroyed his reputation.”
Evelyn's eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
Her mother looked at the screen.
“The board.”
The emergency meeting began at nine.
Seventeen directors sat around the enormous table.
Evelyn took the central chair.
Samuel's seat was empty.
But somehow his presence dominated the room.
The chairman stood.
“Ms. Sterling, this meeting concerns the validity of your authority.”
Evelyn remained calm.
“My authority comes from the family trust.”
“Which is currently under investigation.”
“By whom?”
“The board.”
“Who authorized the investigation?”
“The board.”
“So you're investigating the person who legally controls the company.”
“Yes.”
Evelyn smiled.
“Interesting.”
A director leaned forward.
“You are making this personal.”
“No.”
She looked around the table.
“You made it personal when you stole my family.”
Silence.
The chairman slammed his hand on the table.
“This company has survived for generations without you.”
“No.”
Evelyn's voice was quiet.
“It survived despite people like you.”
A few directors exchanged uncomfortable looks.
Then the doors opened.
Samuel walked in.
Evelyn's blood ran cold.
He was perfectly dressed.
Not a scratch.
Not a bruise.
He smiled.
“Good morning.”
Sebastian immediately stepped forward.
“You were supposed to be dead.”
Samuel laughed.
“I've been told that before.”
Evelyn stared.
“How did you survive?”
Samuel ignored her.
He walked to the table.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I believe we have a problem.”
The chairman nodded.
“We do.”
Samuel placed a folder on the table.
Inside were financial documents.
Bank transfers.
Offshore accounts.
Shell companies.
All linked to Evelyn.
She looked at the papers.
“This is fabricated.”
Samuel smiled.
“Prove it.”
“I can.”
“Then explain this.”
He pushed another document toward her.
A transfer of $280 million.
From the Sterling Trust.
To a private account in Switzerland.
With Evelyn's electronic signature.
Her face went cold.
“I never authorized this.”
Samuel smiled.
“But your signature says otherwise.”
The room erupted.
Directors began demanding answers.
Evelyn looked at her lawyer.
“Verify the transaction.”
He took the documents.
Minutes later, his face changed.
“Ms. Sterling…”
“What?”
“The signature is authentic.”
Evelyn stared.
“That isn't possible.”
Samuel leaned back.
“Perhaps you forgot.”
“I didn't.”
“Then perhaps someone is using your authority.”
Evelyn's eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
Samuel smiled.
“That's what we intend to discover.”
A director stood.
“I move that Evelyn Sterling be suspended immediately.”
Another seconded it.
Evelyn looked around the table.
One by one, hands began to rise.
Five.
Ten.
Fourteen.
Sixteen.
Seventeen.
All against her.
The chairman struck the table.
“The motion passes.”
Security entered.
Evelyn didn't move.
Then Sebastian stepped forward.
“Touch her and you'll regret it.”
The guards hesitated.
Samuel looked at him.
“Still protecting your sister?”
Sebastian stared.
“Always.”
Samuel smiled.
“That will make the next part even more painful.”
Outside the boardroom, Evelyn's lawyer rushed toward her.
“There's more.”
“What?”
“The banks have frozen your personal accounts.”
“All of them?”
“Yes.”
“My trust?”
“Frozen.”
“My properties?”
“Under injunction.”
Evelyn stared.
“They've dismantled everything in hours.”
Her mother approached.
“No.”
Evelyn turned.
“What?”
“They haven't dismantled everything.”
Her mother reached into her coat.
She handed Evelyn a small key.
“This belonged to your father.”
“What does it open?”
“The original Sterling vault.”
Evelyn frowned.
“I thought the vault was destroyed.”
“It wasn't.”
“Where?”
Her mother looked at Sebastian.
Then whispered:
“Under the old family chapel.”
They reached the chapel after dark.
The building had been abandoned for years.
Evelyn unlocked the hidden door beneath the altar.
A staircase descended into darkness.
At the bottom was a steel door.
The key turned.
The vault opened.
Inside were hundreds of documents.
But Evelyn immediately noticed something.
Every document had been copied.
Every transaction.
Every transfer.
Every board decision.
Her father's private records.
Sebastian picked up a file.
“Look.”
Evelyn opened it.
It contained Samuel's financial history.
Every payment.
Every offshore transfer.
Every connection to the Black Serpent.
But then she saw something worse.
A transfer made three days ago.
PAYEE: EVELYN STERLING.
The amount?
$280 million.
The same amount used to frame her.
Evelyn stared.
“The transfer was made before I received control of the trust.”
Sebastian nodded.
“Which means…”
“Someone knew the trust would be transferred to me.”
Her mother whispered:
“Someone planned this.”
Evelyn turned another page.
The authorization had been made using her digital identity.
But the access location wasn't her office.
It was the Sterling Tower's executive server.
She looked at Sebastian.
“Who has access?”
“Samuel.”
“Who else?”
“The board.”
“Anyone outside?”
Her mother suddenly spoke.
“Your father.”
Evelyn froze.
“What?”
“Thomas built the system.”
“Dad?”
“He created a master access code.”
“Where is it?”
Her mother shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Evelyn looked through the files.
Then found a handwritten note.
THE MASTER CODE IS WITH THE MAN WHO NEVER LEFT.
Her hands trembled.
Thomas.
Her father was alive.
And he had access to everything.
Including the transfer that had just destroyed her.
A phone rang.
All three turned.
It wasn't Evelyn's.
It was her mother's.
She answered.
“Hello?”
Silence.
Then a man's voice.
Older.
Calm.
Familiar.
Evelyn's mother dropped the phone.
Evelyn picked it up.
“Who is this?”
The voice answered.
“You finally found the vault.”
Evelyn stopped breathing.
“Dad?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
Her knees nearly gave way.
“Where are you?”
“You shouldn't have opened the vault.”
“Why?”
“Because now they know you have the evidence.”
“Who?”
“The people who killed me.”
“You're alive.”
“Yes.”
“Then come home.”
Silence.
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because if I return, they will kill you.”
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“Who are they?”
Another pause.
Then:
“Samuel is not your greatest enemy.”
Evelyn gripped the phone.
“Then who is?”
Her father's voice became quiet.
“Your brother.”
Evelyn looked at Sebastian.
He had heard every word.
His face went pale.
“That's impossible.”
Her father continued:
“Sebastian has been lying to you.”
Sebastian stepped backward.
“No.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“Dad, what are you saying?”
“Your brother wasn't raised by the Black Serpent.”
“Then who raised him?”
“Me.”
Silence.
Evelyn's heart stopped.
“What?”
“I took him.”
Sebastian's expression collapsed.
“You…”
“I had no choice.”
“You stole me from my mother.”
“I saved you.”
“You lied to everyone.”
“I protected you.”
Sebastian's voice broke.
“You made me believe you were dead.”
“I needed you to disappear.”
“Why?”
Her father didn't answer.
Evelyn shouted:
“Why?”
Finally, Thomas spoke.
“Because Sebastian is the only person who can destroy the Sterling Empire.”
The call ended.
No goodbye.
No explanation.
Just silence.
Evelyn turned toward her brother.
Sebastian was crying.
“I didn't know.”
She stared at him.
“What didn't you know?”
“That he was alive.”
“Then why did you say you knew him?”
“Because I thought…”
He couldn't finish.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“What did you think?”
Sebastian looked at her.
“That he was the man who had been controlling me.”
Evelyn froze.
“Who?”
“My father.”
A terrible silence filled the vault.
Sebastian whispered:
“Thomas Sterling didn't save me.”
“He trained me.”
Evelyn's face went pale.
“To do what?”
Sebastian looked toward the documents.
“To destroy the Black Serpent.”
Then he looked at her.
“And to inherit it.”
The next morning, every television in the country showed the same announcement.
The Sterling Group had entered emergency restructuring.
Evelyn had been officially removed.
The board had appointed an interim chairman.
Samuel Vale.
And beneath the announcement was another story.
MYSTERIOUS INVESTOR ACQUIRES CONTROLLING INTEREST IN STERLING GROUP.
Evelyn watched the screen.
The investor's identity was hidden behind a holding company.
But Sebastian recognized the logo.
His face changed.
“No.”
“What?”
He pointed at the screen.
“That company belongs to the Black Serpent.”
Evelyn stared.
“How much did they buy?”
“Thirty-one percent.”
“Enough to control the board?”
“With the directors already supporting Samuel?”
“Yes.”
Her mother whispered:
“They've taken the empire.”
Evelyn looked at the screen.
The Sterling name was disappearing from buildings.
Shares were changing hands.
Employees were being dismissed.
Assets were being transferred.
Her family had spent generations building the empire.
And in less than forty-eight hours, it had turned against her.
But Evelyn didn't cry.
She stood.
“Let them have it.”
Sebastian looked at her.
“What?”
“They think the empire is the prize.”
She picked up her father's note.
“They're wrong.”
Her eyes hardened.
“The trust is.”
Her mother stared.
“What are you planning?”
Evelyn smiled faintly.
“I'm going to let them believe they won.”
She walked toward the door.
“Then I'm going to take everything back.”
Behind her, Sebastian asked:
“How?”
Evelyn stopped.
“By finding my father.”
She turned.
“And when I find him…”
Her voice became cold.
“I'll make him tell me why he destroyed his own children to protect an empire that never deserved us.”
Outside, the city continued to celebrate the fall of Evelyn Sterling.
But deep beneath the surface, the original Sterling Trust had begun moving again.
And for the first time in twenty-eight years, all three heirs were alive.
The empire had turned against Evelyn.
May you like
But it had made one mistake.
It had forgotten who the Sterling heirs really were.
