Chapter 14 — The Secret That Could Destroy Chloe

Chapter 14 — The Secret That Could Destroy Chloe
The message remained on my screen.
COME ALONE.
Then another:
OR ANNA DIES.
I read it three times.
The words didn't change.
My hands did.
They began to shake.
Derek saw my face.
"What happened?"
I handed him the phone.
He read the messages.
His expression hardened.
"No."
I looked at him.
"I'm going."
"Absolutely not."
"They have Anna."
"That's exactly why it's a trap."
"I know."
"Then you know you can't go."
I looked toward the doorway.
My sister was standing there.
Anna had heard everything.
She walked toward me.
"No."
I shook my head.
"Anna—"
"They've spent my whole life using me to control you."
Her voice trembled.
"They won't do it again."
I touched her cheek.
"You don't know what they'll do."
"Neither do you."
She took my hand.
"But if you go alone, they control both of us."
Derek looked at her.
She was right.
That was the terrifying part.
My father entered the room.
"I've found the location."
"Where?"
"The old Vale factory."
He placed a map on the table.
"The official building was demolished after the fire."
I looked at the map.
"But there's an underground structure."
"Yes."
"How do we get in?"
He pointed toward an old service road.
"Through here."
Derek studied the map.
"How many entrances?"
"Three."
"Which one is secure?"
"None."
I looked at my father.
"Who knows about the basement?"
"Jonathan."
"Anyone else?"
He hesitated.
"Adrian."
"He's dead."
"Yes."
"Then who?"
My father looked at me.
"Your mother."
I turned.
She was standing in the doorway.
"Mom."
She looked exhausted.
"I know how to get inside."
We left before sunrise.
Nobody spoke during the drive.
The sky was gray.
The city slowly disappeared behind us.
I sat in the back with Anna.
She leaned against the window.
I watched her reflection.
My sister.
My twin.
A person I had spent twenty-eight years not knowing existed.
"What do you remember?" I asked.
"About the night we were separated?"
She nodded.
"Not much."
"Try."
She closed her eyes.
"I remember a woman holding me."
"Brenda?"
"I think so."
"What else?"
"A man."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"What did he say?"
She frowned.
"He said..."
She paused.
"Don't let her wake up."
My blood ran cold.
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"Did you see him?"
"Only once."
"What did he look like?"
"Dark hair."
"Anything else?"
"A scar."
"Where?"
"Here."
She touched the left side of her face.
I stared.
A memory surfaced.
A photograph.
A man standing behind Jonathan.
The same scar.
My father noticed my expression.
"What?"
I told him.
He went pale.
"That can't be."
"Who is he?"
My father didn't answer.
My mother did.
"Richard Cross."
Daniel's father.
I stared.
"He was there when we were born?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
My mother looked away.
"Because he helped Jonathan create the trust."
My stomach twisted.
"But you said Daniel's father was one of them."
"He was."
"Then why did he want Adrian dead?"
"He didn't."
I frowned.
"Then who?"
My mother whispered:
"Jonathan."
I stared.
"What?"
She looked at me.
"Your grandfather ordered Adrian's death."
Silence.
Derek stopped breathing.
My father closed his eyes.
I felt the world shift.
"You told me Jonathan didn't."
My mother shook her head.
"I lied."
The car continued through the rain.
I looked at my mother.
"Why?"
"Because Jonathan threatened Anna."
"She's already alive."
"He threatened to kill her."
"So you protected him."
"Yes."
I shook my head.
"Everyone keeps protecting monsters."
My mother began crying.
"I was trying to protect you."
"Stop saying that."
She looked at me.
"I don't want protection anymore."
We arrived at the factory just after six.
The building was abandoned.
Broken windows.
Rusting machinery.
Walls blackened by decades-old smoke.
But beneath it, according to my mother, was another world.
We entered through the service tunnel.
The door opened with the key she carried.
Inside was a concrete staircase.
We descended.
The air became colder.
At the bottom was a steel corridor.
My mother stopped.
"This is where it happened."
"What?"
"Adrian's final meeting."
"With whom?"
"Jonathan."
I stared at the walls.
"Where is he?"
"At the end."
We continued.
A door opened.
Inside was a room containing a single chair.
And a camera.
The camera was still running.
A monitor flickered.
Then a video appeared.
Adrian.
Alive.
Twenty-eight years earlier.
He was sitting in the chair.
Across from him stood Jonathan.
I couldn't breathe.
Adrian spoke.
"You promised me."
Jonathan answered:
"I promised you nothing."
"You promised Chloe would be safe."
"She will be."
"If I disappear."
"Yes."
Adrian looked furious.
"You don't understand."
"I understand perfectly."
"You'll destroy her."
"No."
Jonathan leaned closer.
"I'll make her powerful."
Adrian shook his head.
"Power isn't protection."
Jonathan smiled.
"Sometimes it is."
The video continued.
Adrian stood.
"You can't have the trust."
Jonathan's face changed.
"I already do."
"No."
Adrian pointed toward the camera.
"I've transferred it."
Jonathan froze.
"To whom?"
Adrian smiled.
"Chloe."
My heart stopped.
The video continued.
"She is the sole heir."
Jonathan stared.
"She's a child."
"Exactly."
"She can't control it."
"Neither can you."
Adrian walked toward the door.
Jonathan grabbed his arm.
"You're making a mistake."
Adrian pulled away.
"No."
He looked directly toward the camera.
"I'm correcting one."
The screen went black.
I turned toward my mother.
"What happened next?"
She didn't answer.
My father did.
"Jonathan killed him."
"How?"
"He didn't."
I stared.
"What?"
My father shook his head.
"That's what we've all believed."
"Then who?"
A voice came from behind us.
"Me."
We turned.
A man stood in the doorway.
Older.
Scarred.
Gray-haired.
Holding a gun.
Richard Cross.
Daniel's father.
I stared at him.
"You."
He smiled.
"Hello, Chloe."
My mother stepped forward.
"You were supposed to be dead."
"So was Adrian."
My father raised his weapon.
Richard laughed.
"Put it down."
Derek stepped beside him.
"No."
Richard looked at me.
"You want to know who killed your father?"
I nodded.
"Tell me."
He smiled.
"Your grandfather."
I froze.
"Why?"
"Because Adrian transferred the trust."
"But Jonathan didn't kill him."
"No."
Richard lowered his gun.
"I did."
My stomach dropped.
"Why?"
"Because Jonathan ordered me."
My father looked devastated.
"Richard..."
"I was his executioner."
I couldn't breathe.
"Then why are you alive?"
"Because Jonathan needed someone to blame."
"For Adrian's death."
"Yes."
"And he blamed you."
"Exactly."
Richard smiled.
"Everyone thought I died in the factory fire."
"What happened?"
"I escaped."
"Why come back?"
"Because I want what Adrian left."
"The trust."
"No."
He looked at me.
"The archive."
I frowned.
"Why?"
"Because the archive contains evidence that will destroy every person who ever betrayed me."
I stared.
"You're Daniel's father."
"Yes."
"Then Daniel knows you're alive."
Richard smiled.
"Daniel doesn't know everything."
"What doesn't he know?"
"That I started his war."
I felt cold.
"You destroyed his family."
"Yes."
"Then blamed the Vales."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"To create an enemy."
I shook my head.
"Why would you do that?"
"Because people unite against an enemy."
He stepped closer.
"Your family destroyed mine."
"Yes."
"I destroyed theirs."
I stared.
"And Daniel?"
"He was the perfect weapon."
I understood.
"He's been manipulating me."
"Yes."
"He wanted me to destroy the trust."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because once the trust collapses, the archive becomes vulnerable."
"And you take it."
"Exactly."
I felt sick.
The entire war.
The messages.
The threats.
Daniel.
Brenda.
Thomas.
The archive.
All of it had been part of another plan.
A plan that began before I was born.
Richard looked at Anna.
"And now I have both keys."
Anna stepped closer to me.
"Keys?"
Richard smiled.
"One twin carries the inheritance."
He looked at me.
"The other carries the authorization."
He raised his gun.
"And together, you can open everything."
Derek stepped forward.
"Don't."
Richard pointed at him.
"You."
Derek stopped.
"You were supposed to marry Chloe."
"I did."
"You were supposed to control her."
"I refused."
"You were supposed to deliver her."
"I protected her."
Richard laughed.
"You think that makes you a good man?"
"No."
Derek's voice was steady.
"I know it doesn't."
"Then why are you still here?"
"Because I love her."
Richard's expression hardened.
"Love."
He laughed.
"The excuse of cowards."
I stepped between them.
"Leave him alone."
Richard looked at me.
"Then come with me."
"No."
He raised the gun.
"Then Anna dies."
Anna stepped forward.
"Take me."
I turned.
"Anna, no."
She looked at me.
"You can't let them control you forever."
Richard smiled.
"Smart girl."
He grabbed her.
Derek moved.
A gunshot exploded.
Derek fell.
I screamed.
"JULIAN!"
He hit the floor.
Blood spread across his shirt.
Richard pulled Anna toward the door.
I ran after them.
My father fired.
Richard disappeared into the corridor.
Then the lights went out.
I dropped beside Derek.
"Stay with me."
He opened his eyes.
"I'm okay."
"You've been shot."
"It's the shoulder."
My father knelt beside him.
"Pressure."
I pressed my hand against the wound.
Derek grimaced.
"Chloe."
"What?"
"Go."
"No."
"Get Anna."
"I'm not leaving you."
He grabbed my wrist.
"She needs you."
My mother looked toward the corridor.
"I'll go."
I shook my head.
"No."
I stood.
My father looked at me.
"Chloe."
"I'm bringing her home."
The corridor split in two.
I heard footsteps.
I ran toward them.
"Anna!"
No answer.
Then a door slammed.
I reached it.
Locked.
I hit it.
"Anna!"
Her voice came from the other side.
"Chloe!"
"I'm here."
"I'm okay."
"Is Richard there?"
"No."
I froze.
"What?"
"He left."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
I tried the handle.
It opened.
Anna stood alone.
In her hand was a folder.
"What is that?"
She looked terrified.
"Something Richard left."
I took it.
The first page contained my name.
The second contained Anna's.
The third contained a photograph.
Then I saw the final document.
A birth record.
Two names.
CHLOE HART.
ANNA HART.
But beside Anna's name was a handwritten note.
SECOND CHILD — NOT ELIGIBLE.
I looked at Anna.
"What does this mean?"
She shook her head.
"I don't know."
I turned the page.
There was another note.
Only one child can inherit.
My heart stopped.
"What?"
Anna looked at me.
"What?"
I read the next sentence.
If both survive, the trust remains frozen.
I stared at her.
"That's why they separated us."
"Yes."
"And that's why Brenda kept us apart."
"Yes."
"But what happens if we both claim the trust?"
Anna looked at me.
"The trust collapses."
"And the archive?"
"Releases automatically."
I felt cold.
Richard hadn't wanted the archive destroyed.
He wanted us to choose.
One heir.
One fortune.
One survivor.
The same trap our family had built for generations.
Only this time, there was one difference.
I looked at Anna.
"We don't choose."
She frowned.
"What?"
"We refuse."
We returned to the main chamber.
Derek was sitting against the wall.
His wound had been bandaged.
My father stood beside him.
My mother was crying.
I held up the document.
"They built another trap."
Everyone looked at me.
"The trust requires one heir."
My father nodded.
"But if both of us claim it..."
"It collapses."
I looked at Anna.
She nodded.
"And if it collapses?"
My father looked at me.
"The archive releases."
I smiled.
"Then that's what we're doing."
My mother stared.
"You'll lose everything."
"No."
I looked at her.
"We'll lose the fortune."
She understood.
"But we'll keep ourselves."
Jonathan's voice suddenly came through the intercom.
"Chloe."
I looked up.
"You're making the right choice."
I laughed.
"You knew."
"Yes."
"You knew we'd choose this."
"Adrian did."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
"Because you needed to choose freely."
I shook my head.
"Your generation never understood freedom."
Silence.
Then Jonathan said:
"You're right."
The timer appeared on the screen.
18:00:00.
I stared at it.
"What happens when it reaches zero?"
"The archive releases."
"Everything?"
"Everything."
I looked at Anna.
She smiled.
For the first time, we weren't fighting over an inheritance.
We were destroying it.
But then another screen turned on.
A live video.
Brenda.
She was sitting in a room somewhere.
Still in custody.
Still smiling.
Behind her stood two officers.
One was unconscious.
The other held a gun to his own head.
Brenda looked into the camera.
"You think you've won."
I stared.
She continued.
"You haven't."
The camera shifted.
A hospital room appeared.
My mother gasped.
A baby lay in a transparent crib.
I froze.
"What is that?"
Brenda smiled.
"Your secret."
My blood ran cold.
The camera moved closer.
The baby had my eyes.
Anna's eyes.
The same tiny birthmark beneath the left ear.
I couldn't breathe.
Brenda whispered:
"Do you really think you were the only children Adrian had?"
The screen went black.
I looked at Anna.
She looked at me.
Neither of us could speak.
Then my father whispered:
"No."
My mother covered her mouth.
Derek stared at the screen.
And I understood.
The twins weren't the final secret.
There was another child.
A third heir.
A child whose existence could destroy the entire trust.
And somewhere, someone had kept that child hidden for twenty-eight years.
The timer continued counting down.
17:59:21.
For the first time, I was no longer afraid of losing the fortune.
I was afraid of what we would discover about the family that had created it.
And I knew, with terrifying certainty, that the last secret would hurt more than all the others combined.
Because this time...
May you like
the secret wasn't about money.
It was about a child who had been waiting for us.
