Chapter 8 — The Room Behind the Family Library

Chapter 8 — The Room Behind the Family Library

The gunshot had barely finished echoing when the hotel plunged into darkness.

I hit the floor hard.

Emily landed beside me.

Someone shouted from the hallway.

"Chloe!"

Derek.

I knew his voice.

But another voice was closer.

A whisper against my ear.

"Don't move."

Brenda.

My blood turned cold.

I couldn't see her.

I could barely breathe.

Then another shot exploded.

Glass shattered somewhere above us.

Emily grabbed my wrist.

"Stay down."

A man's voice thundered from the hallway.

"Let them go!"

Thomas.

Then Derek shouted:

"Father!"

The silence that followed was worse than the gunfire.

I heard footsteps.

One set.

Then another.

Then the scrape of something heavy being dragged across the floor.

I felt Brenda move beside me.

Her perfume reached me before her voice did.

"Your father lied to you."

I whispered:

"About what?"

"Everything."

Then she disappeared into the darkness.

Emergency lights flickered on.

The room came into view.

Emily was bleeding from a cut along her forehead.

Derek stood in the doorway.

Thomas was gone.

Brenda was gone.

And there was a bullet hole in the wall above my head.

Derek ran toward me.

"Are you hurt?"

I pushed his hand away.

"Where's Thomas?"

"Gone."

"Where's Brenda?"

"She escaped."

I looked at Emily.

"She was here."

Derek nodded.

"I know."

I stood.

My legs were shaking.

"You followed me."

"I followed the person following you."

"Who?"

"Thomas."

I stared at him.

"How did you know?"

"Because he called me."

"When?"

"Twenty minutes ago."

"What did he say?"

Derek looked at Emily.

Then at me.

"He said he had something I needed."

"What?"

He hesitated.

"A book."

I frowned.

"What book?"

"The Vance family ledger."

Emily went pale.

"What?"

Derek looked at her.

"He said it contained the location of the room behind the family library."

I stared.

"The room."

Emily nodded slowly.

"The room your father used."

I looked at Derek.

"What's inside?"

He answered:

"Everything."

We left the hotel through the service entrance.

Derek drove.

Emily sat in the back.

I remained silent.

My mind kept returning to Thomas's words.

Your father isn't your biological father.

I wanted to dismiss them.

I couldn't.

Too many lies had already been exposed.

My mother.

My father.

Derek.

Brenda.

Emily.

Everyone had hidden something.

Why should this be different?

I looked at Derek.

"Did you know?"

He kept his eyes on the road.

"Know what?"

"That Thomas said my father wasn't my biological father."

His hands tightened.

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Why did you hesitate?"

"Because I was thinking."

"About what?"

"About how much more my family knows than they've told us."

Emily spoke from the back seat.

"Your family isn't the only one keeping secrets."

I turned.

"What do you mean?"

She looked at me.

"Your mother knew."

My stomach dropped.

"She knew?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"Because she was there when the truth was discovered."

I stared at her.

"Why didn't she tell me?"

"Because your father made her promise."

"Why?"

"To protect you."

I laughed.

"That word again."

Nobody responded.

The family library was in the oldest part of the Vale estate.

A separate building connected to the main mansion by a covered walkway.

I had never been inside.

Derek had told me it contained family records.

Nothing more.

Now I understood why.

The moment we entered, I felt something change.

The room was enormous.

Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.

Dark wood.

Leather chairs.

A stone fireplace.

Thousands of books.

Portraits of dead Vales watched us from the walls.

Emily walked slowly toward the fireplace.

"This is it."

"What?"

"The room."

I looked around.

"Where?"

She pointed at the shelves.

"Your father told me there was a hidden room behind the family library."

"How do we open it?"

She shook her head.

"I don't know."

Derek walked toward the fireplace.

"Thomas said the ledger would tell us."

I frowned.

"Where is it?"

He pulled a small black book from his coat.

"This."

I stared.

"You had it?"

"Thomas gave it to me."

"When?"

"Before the shooting."

"Why?"

"He said I would need it to find the truth."

I took the book.

The cover was worn.

No title.

No markings.

I opened it.

The first pages contained names.

Dates.

Payments.

Property transfers.

Then I saw something familiar.

My father's name.

Beside it:

Asset Custodian.

Another name.

Brenda Vale.

Financial Controller.

Another.

Thomas Vale.

Principal Beneficiary.

Then Derek.

His name had been added much later.

Operational Liaison.

My stomach tightened.

"Operational liaison?"

Derek looked away.

"What does that mean?"

"I don't know."

"You're in the ledger."

"I know."

"Your mother is in it."

"Yes."

"Your father is in it."

"Yes."

"Emily?"

She shook her head.

"No."

That was strange.

I turned the page.

A handwritten note appeared.

The child is not to be entered.

I looked at Emily.

"The child."

She nodded.

"That's me."

I frowned.

"No."

She shook her head.

"Your father told me the child was you."

"But I'm not in the ledger."

"Exactly."

I felt a chill.

"Why?"

Emily whispered:

"Because you were never supposed to exist."

The words echoed in my mind.

I closed the ledger.

"No."

Emily stepped closer.

"Your father was trying to protect you."

"Stop saying that."

"It's true."

"Then explain."

She took a breath.

"Your mother was married to Thomas before she met your father."

I froze.

"What?"

Derek stared at her.

"My mother?"

Emily nodded.

"Thomas was your mother's first husband."

I looked at Derek.

He looked devastated.

"No."

Emily continued.

"They had Emily."

Derek swallowed.

"Then your mother left him."

"Why?"

"Because Thomas became violent."

I looked at the portraits.

"Where did my father come in?"

"After."

My chest tightened.

"Then who am I?"

Emily looked at me.

"That's what the room will tell us."

I turned toward the shelves.

"Find the entrance."

We searched for twenty minutes.

Nothing.

No hidden switch.

No visible door.

No mechanism.

Then I remembered my childhood.

My father's library.

The music box.

The game he used to play.

He would ask:

Where does the fox sleep?

I would answer:

Behind the books.

He would laugh.

I had thought it was a silly game.

Now I looked at the shelves.

"Fox."

Derek turned.

"What?"

"My father used to ask me a question."

"What question?"

"Where does the fox sleep?"

Emily looked at the shelves.

"Behind the books."

I walked to the center bookcase.

There were hundreds of volumes.

I scanned them.

Then I saw it.

A small brass fox engraved on the spine of an old book.

I pulled it.

Nothing happened.

I pushed it.

Click.

The entire shelf moved.

Derek grabbed my arm.

"Back."

The bookshelf slowly opened.

Behind it was a narrow passage.

Cold air rushed out.

I stared into darkness.

The hidden room was real.

We entered.

The walls were concrete.

The ceiling low.

There were no windows.

A single desk stood in the center.

On it was an old tape recorder.

Beside it:

A photograph.

My father.

My mother.

And me.

As a baby.

I picked it up.

On the back:

She was born here.

My blood ran cold.

"What does that mean?"

Emily shook her head.

"I don't know."

Derek looked at the desk.

"There's a tape."

He picked it up.

The label said:

FOR CHLOE — ONLY AFTER THE WEDDING.

I stared at him.

"After the wedding."

Derek nodded.

I inserted the tape.

Static.

Then my father's voice.

"Chloe."

I closed my eyes.

"If you're hearing this, then you married Derek."

I looked at him.

He looked away.

My father's voice continued.

"I am sorry."

The recording paused.

"You were never supposed to marry him."

Derek's face changed.

"What?"

I listened.

"Not because Derek is evil."

Derek looked up.

"But because his family has spent years trying to discover what you are."

I frowned.

"What I am?"

My father's voice became quieter.

"You're not my biological daughter."

My heart stopped.

Derek whispered:

"No."

The recording continued.

"Your mother was pregnant when I met her."

I couldn't breathe.

"She believed the child's father was Thomas Vale."

Derek looked at Emily.

"But she was wrong."

I felt dizzy.

"Your mother was already carrying a secret."

The tape crackled.

"Chloe, your biological father was not Thomas."

Silence.

Then:

"It was someone else."

I stared at the recorder.

"Who?"

My father's voice answered.

"Someone who died before you were born."

The tape paused.

Then:

"Someone whose identity was deliberately erased."

I looked at Emily.

She was crying.

The recording continued.

"The reason I raised you as my daughter was simple."

A long pause.

"I loved you."

My throat tightened.

"But there was another reason."

The next words shattered me.

"You were the only surviving heir to the original Vale fortune."

Derek stood abruptly.

"No."

My father continued:

"Thomas does not own the fortune."

"Brenda does not own it."

"The family trust does not own it."

"You do."

I stared at the tape.

"You are the legal heir."

Derek looked at me.

"What?"

My father's voice continued.

"That is why they wanted you."

"That is why Brenda arranged the marriage."

"That is why Derek was sent to watch you."

"And that is why Thomas wants you dead."

The tape clicked.

I thought it had ended.

Then my father's voice returned.

One final sentence.

"There is one person who knows the complete truth."

I leaned closer.

"Who?"

My father whispered:

"Your husband."

I looked at Derek.

He went completely still.

The tape stopped.

Nobody spoke.

I turned toward Derek.

"How much do you know?"

He looked at me.

"I don't know."

"That's not enough."

"I swear."

"My father said you know."

"I don't know the whole truth."

"What do you know?"

Derek swallowed.

"I know your biological father was connected to the original Vale fortune."

"Who was he?"

"I don't know."

"You've seen the records."

"Yes."

"You've been watching me for eight years."

"Yes."

"You've had access to everything."

"Not everything."

"Then tell me what you know."

Derek looked at Emily.

She nodded.

He closed his eyes.

"Your biological father was my father's older brother."

Silence.

I couldn't breathe.

Derek continued:

"His name was Adrian Vale."

I stared.

"Thomas's brother."

"Yes."

"And he died?"

"Before you were born."

"How?"

Derek shook his head.

"We were told he died in an accident."

"But?"

"There was no accident."

I felt cold.

"What happened?"

"He was murdered."

"By whom?"

Derek looked toward the doorway.

"I don't know."

Then a voice came from the darkness.

"I do."

We all turned.

My mother stood in the doorway.

She looked at me.

Then at the recorder.

And finally at Derek.

Her voice trembled.

"Adrian was murdered by Thomas."

Derek's face went white.

My mother continued.

"And Brenda helped him."

I stared.

"Why?"

She stepped into the room.

"Because Adrian discovered the original trust."

"What trust?"

"The one your father just told you about."

"The fortune."

She nodded.

"And he tried to give it to you."

I looked at Derek.

"Why didn't he?"

My mother looked at me.

"Because he died before he could."

I felt tears in my eyes.

"So Dad raised me."

"Yes."

"Knowing I wasn't his daughter."

"Yes."

"And he hid me from Thomas."

"Yes."

"Then why did he let me marry Derek?"

My mother looked at the floor.

"He didn't."

I froze.

"What?"

"Your father never agreed to the marriage."

"Then who did?"

She looked at Derek.

"Your husband."

Derek's face collapsed.

"No."

My mother nodded.

"Derek arranged the marriage."

I stared at him.

He didn't deny it.

I whispered:

"Why?"

He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

"Because I thought marrying you was the only way I could keep you alive."

I shook my head.

"That's not true."

"It is."

"You used me."

"I did."

"You manipulated me."

"Yes."

"You lied."

"Yes."

I stepped backward.

"And now?"

Derek looked at me.

"Now I love you."

I laughed through my tears.

"That doesn't make it better."

"No."

He lowered his head.

"It doesn't."

Suddenly, the hidden room door slammed shut.

We all turned.

A mechanical lock clicked.

My mother shouted:

"Everyone back!"

Smoke began filling the room.

Derek grabbed my hand.

"There's another exit."

"Where?"

He pointed toward the floor.

A panel opened.

A narrow staircase descended.

We rushed down.

Behind us, the hidden room filled with smoke.

At the bottom was another door.

Derek opened it.

We emerged into an underground tunnel.

I looked back.

My mother was coughing.

Emily was crying.

Derek was bleeding from his forehead.

But we were alive.

For the moment.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

YOU FOUND THE ROOM.

Another:

NOW FIND THE WOMAN WHO OWNS IT.

I stared.

"Who?"

A final message appeared.

YOUR REAL MOTHER.

I looked at my mother.

She had gone completely pale.

May you like

Because she knew exactly who the message meant.

And for the first time since I had discovered my father was alive, she looked genuinely terrified.
