Chapter 2: The Promise He Never Broke

Chapter 2: The Promise He Never Broke

The cemetery fell silent.

The older woman stared at the baby's tiny face.

The same dark eyes.

The same small dimple on his left cheek.

The same unmistakable resemblance to her late son, Ethan.

Her voice trembled.

"What... did you just say?"

The young woman swallowed hard.

"My name is Lily."

"Ethan never knew I was pregnant."

The words hung in the cold morning air.

"He died two weeks before I found out."

Tears streamed down Lily's face.

"I came here because I didn't know where else to introduce your grandson."

The older woman slowly sank onto the grass beside the grave.

"My grandson..."

She looked toward Ethan's photograph engraved on the headstone.

"You always wanted a family."

Lily carefully removed a worn envelope from the baby's blanket.

"He left this with me before his last deployment."

"It's addressed to you."

With shaking hands, the older woman unfolded the letter.

"Mom, if anything ever happens to me, don't let grief close your heart. If the future brings someone into your life who carries a part of me, please love them the way you've always loved me."

The letter ended with one sentence.

"Love doesn't end at a grave."

The older woman broke into tears.

She reached out carefully.

"May I hold him?"

May you like

After a hesitant moment, Lily nodded.

The baby yawned peacefully as he settled into his grandmother's arms.
