CHAPTER 2 — The Lie She Built

CHAPTER 2 — The Lie She Built

The man didn’t move at first.

The ultrasound photo trembled in the maid’s hand like it weighed more than paper should.

He took it slowly.

Like if he rushed, reality might break.

On the back, the handwriting blurred slightly from moisture—tears, maybe, or time.

Our child is still alive.

His throat tightened.

“No…” he whispered.

The woman in white stepped forward quickly.

“Don’t listen to her,” she said sharply. “She was dismissed months ago. She left on her own. I handled everything for you—she tried to come back after you moved on.”

But his eyes never left the maid.

“Moved on?” he repeated quietly.

The maid shook her head weakly, still on her knees.

“I didn’t leave,” she said. “You went abroad for the merger deal. I tried to tell you I was pregnant. But she answered your phone.”

The man froze.

Every word hit something buried.

A missed call.

A message he never saw.

A silence he assumed meant peace.

His voice cracked.

“What did you tell her?” he asked, turning slightly toward the woman in white.

The woman forced a smile.

“The truth. That she was unstable. That she was trying to trap you with a pregnancy that probably wasn’t even yours.”

The maid flinched like she’d been slapped again.

The man’s hands slowly clenched.

“Is that what you told her?” he asked.

The woman stepped closer, softer now.

“I protected you.”

But his expression had already changed.

May you like

Because he was looking at the maid again.

And seeing what couldn’t be faked.
