CHAPTER 3 — The Truth Breaks

CHAPTER 3 — The Truth Breaks

He walked forward.

Slowly.

Past the marble table.

Past the untouched breakfast.

Past the woman in white who suddenly looked less certain with every step he took.

He stopped in front of the maid.

Kneeled.

The room seemed to stop breathing with him.

“Look at me,” he said gently.

She hesitated.

Then lifted her eyes.

Red. Exhausted. Still full of fear.

“I never got your messages,” he said quietly. “I never knew.”

Her lips trembled.

“You didn’t come back,” she whispered.

“I didn’t know you were waiting.”

A silence followed that felt too heavy to stay in one place.

Then she broke.

“I was alone,” she cried. “I had no money, no home, nothing. And she told me you would take the baby away if I told you the truth.”

The man’s face tightened.

“What baby?” he asked.

Her hand shook as she guided his toward her stomach.

“I kept him.”

The world collapsed into stillness.

The woman in white stepped back.

“That’s not possible,” she snapped. “She’s lying—she’s—”

But the man wasn’t listening anymore.

His palm rested against the maid’s belly.

And he felt it.

A faint movement.

Life.

Real.

His breath broke.

“My child…” he whispered.

The maid nodded through tears.

“I never wanted to trap you,” she said. “I just didn’t want him to grow up without a father.”

The man closed his eyes.

And when he opened them again, something in him had changed completely.

He stood.

Turned toward the woman in white.

And this time, his voice was ice.

“Call my lawyer,” he said.

Her face went pale.

“You’re choosing her over everything we built?”

He looked at her like he was seeing her for the first time.

May you like

“No,” he said.

“I’m choosing the truth over you.”
