CHAPTER 2: THE WINTER ON ROUTE 17

CHAPTER 2: THE WINTER ON ROUTE 17
The garage stayed silent.
Captain Briggs never took his eyes off the red wrench.
"M-17," he whispered.
Every veteran in the room recognized the code.
Every rookie did not.
One of the young officers finally asked, "Sir... what does it mean?"
Captain Briggs looked at Rae.
"You never told them?"
Rae shrugged.
"It wasn't important."
Briggs slowly shook his head.
"No."
"It was."
He placed the wrench gently on the workbench.
"Eight years ago..."
"Interstate Route 17 disappeared beneath freezing rain."
Images returned to him as vividly as if they had happened yesterday.
Twisted patrol cars.
An overturned school bus.
Black ice hidden beneath fresh snow.
One deputy trapped inside Unit 214.
The driver's door crushed shut.
Fuel leaking onto the pavement.
Everyone had backed away.
Not because they wanted to.
Because the vehicle could explode.
Except one person.
A civilian mechanic who had been driving home after finishing a night shift.
Rae.
She crawled beneath the wrecked cruiser carrying nothing except that same red torque wrench.
Using it as a pry bar, she loosened the collapsed steering column just enough for firefighters to pull Deputy Michael Grant free.
Captain Briggs quietly added,
"That deputy lived."
"He returned to work."
"And every rescue tool used that night was marked with 'M-17' so future recruits would remember the lesson."
One rookie stared at Rae.
"You were that mechanic?"
She nodded once.
"I was just nearby."
Whitaker's confidence began to fade.
He hadn't known.
May you like
Worse...
Neither had anyone else.
