CHAPTER 3: THE REPORT THAT COULDN'T BE ERASED
Captain Briggs picked up the unsigned inspection sheet.
"Let's talk about Unit 214."
Rae folded her arms.
"The front brake calipers overheated during last night's pursuit."
"The rotors are cracked."
"The brake lines are leaking pressure."
"If that cruiser answers another emergency call..."
"It may never stop."
Whitaker quickly interrupted.
"The department needs the vehicle."
"The repair can wait."
Briggs looked at him in disbelief.
"So can someone's life?"
No answer.
The captain turned toward one of the rookies.
"Officer Diaz."
"Pull yesterday's body-camera footage."
Within minutes, the video played across the garage monitor.
Everyone watched.
Whitaker standing beside the lift.
Rae pointing directly at the damaged brake assembly.
Whitaker saying,
"Write 'passed' and move on."
Then—
The shove.
Clear.
Undeniable.
The wrench sliding across the floor.
Silence filled the garage.
Briggs calmly removed the sergeant's badge from his uniform pocket.
"You are relieved of duty pending investigation."
Whitaker's face turned pale.
"You can't do this over one disagreement."
Briggs answered quietly,
May you like
"No."
"I'm doing it because you valued convenience over human life."
