CHAPTER 12 — THE RECORDING MARGARET LEFT BEHIND

CHAPTER 12 — THE RECORDING MARGARET LEFT BEHIND
The envelope trembled in Leah's hands.
YOUR FATHER IS STILL ALIVE, LEAH.
Six words.
Six words that had shattered everything she thought she knew.
The library was still filled with smoke from the gunshot.
The emergency lights cast long shadows across the walls.
Daniel stood near the broken doorway.
Jonathan was searching the corridor.
Evelyn was frozen beside the overturned chair.
And Margaret was gone.
Again.
Leah stared at the photograph.
A young Margaret.
A young Thomas.
A newborn child.
Her.
Or so she thought.
She turned the photograph over.
Nothing else.
Then she noticed something.
A tiny mark in the bottom corner.
A black bird.
The same symbol that had appeared on Emma's bracelet.
Leah's stomach tightened.
“It's Victoria.”
Daniel turned.
“What?”
“She left this.”
Jonathan walked toward them.
“Don't assume that.”
“Why?”
“Because Victoria wants you to think everything leads back to her.”
Leah looked at the photograph.
“Then who left it?”
No one answered.
Suddenly, Emma spoke.
“I know.”
Everyone turned.
Emma was standing near the library door.
Her face was pale.
“The photograph wasn't Victoria's.”
Leah stared.
“Then whose was it?”
Emma swallowed.
“My mother's.”
THE RECORDING
Emma reached into her coat.
She removed a small black device.
“I found this in the room where Edward kept me.”
Daniel frowned.
“What is it?”
“A recorder.”
“Why didn't you tell us?”
“Because I didn't know what it contained.”
Leah stepped closer.
“Play it.”
Emma hesitated.
Then pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
A woman's breathing followed.
Then Margaret's voice.
Older.
Tired.
Terrified.
“If you're listening to this…”
A pause.
“…then I failed to stop them.”
Leah's eyes filled with tears.
“Mom.”
Margaret continued.
“I don't know who will find this recording.”
“Maybe Leah.”
“Maybe Daniel.”
“Maybe someone I never expected.”
Her voice trembled.
“But there are things I can no longer keep hidden.”
Daniel stared at the recorder.
Margaret continued.
“The first thing you must understand is this.”
“Thomas was your father.”
Leah closed her eyes.
Then Margaret added:
“But blood is not the only thing that determines who a father is.”
Leah opened her eyes.
Daniel looked confused.
Margaret's voice continued.
“Thomas loved Leah.”
“He loved Daniel.”
“He loved Jonathan.”
“And he would have loved Emma.”
A pause.
“But he was not the only man involved in their lives.”
The recording crackled.
Then Margaret said:
“Twenty-three years ago, I discovered that someone had been altering Thomas's medical records.”
Daniel frowned.
“Why?”
“I didn't know.”
“I only knew that Thomas was sick.”
“He was being given medication.”
“Medication that wasn't prescribed by his doctors.”
Jonathan stepped forward.
“What?”
Margaret continued.
“Someone had been slowly poisoning him.”
Silence.
Daniel's face went pale.
“Dad…”
Margaret continued.
“He became weaker.”
“He began forgetting things.”
“He started trusting people he should never have trusted.”
Leah whispered:
“Who was doing it?”
The recording went silent for several seconds.
Then:
“Edward.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Margaret continued.
“But Edward wasn't acting alone.”
THE FOURTH NAME
The recording crackled.
A man's voice appeared faintly in the background.
“Margaret.”
She stopped speaking.
The man said:
“You shouldn't be recording this.”
Margaret replied:
“I need proof.”
“You don't need proof.”
“I do.”
“You're making a mistake.”
Margaret whispered:
“Who are you?”
The man laughed.
The recording became distorted.
Then Margaret's voice returned.
“If I say his name here, he will know.”
Leah leaned closer.
“Say it.”
Margaret continued.
“His name is—”
Static.
The audio broke.
Then silence.
Daniel looked at Emma.
“Can you restore it?”
Emma nodded.
“Maybe.”
Jonathan examined the device.
“There may be a backup.”
“Where?”
Emma pointed toward the floor.
“Inside.”
They opened the recorder.
A tiny memory card was hidden beneath the battery.
Daniel took it.
“Let's hear everything.”
THE SECOND RECORDING
Emma inserted the card into a laptop.
A file appeared.
MARGARET_FINAL_04
Daniel clicked it.
Margaret appeared on screen.
She looked directly into the camera.
Her face was older.
Her hair was gray.
She looked exhausted.
But her eyes were clear.
“Leah.”
She smiled faintly.
“If you are seeing this, I hope you're safe.”
Leah couldn't stop crying.
“I know you will have questions.”
“I know you will be angry.”
“You have every right.”
Margaret paused.
“I lied to you.”
“I lied about your father.”
“I lied about my death.”
“I lied about Emma.”
“I lied about Thomas.”
“But there is one lie I regret more than all the others.”
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
“I told you that the Blackwood family was your family.”
She shook her head.
“It wasn't.”
Leah froze.
Margaret continued.
“The Blackwoods were the people who controlled your life.”
“The Carters were the people who loved you.”
“But your real family…”
She paused.
“…was never what you thought.”
THE BLOODLINE
Margaret reached for a document.
She held it toward the camera.
“This is Thomas's original DNA report.”
Daniel leaned closer.
The report showed three names.
THOMAS CARTER
LEAH CARTER
DANIEL BLACKWOOD
All matched.
Then a fourth.
JONATHAN CARTER
Also matched.
Margaret said:
“These four people are Thomas's biological children.”
Daniel stared.
“But Emma?”
Margaret shook her head.
“Emma is different.”
Emma looked down.
“I knew.”
Leah turned.
“What?”
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
“I knew I wasn't Thomas's daughter.”
Margaret continued.
“Emma is my daughter.”
Leah stared.
“Only mine.”
Emma looked at the screen.
“Then who is my father?”
Margaret didn't answer.
Instead, she said:
“That is the secret I was most afraid to reveal.”
THE MAN WHO SAVED MARGARET
The screen changed.
A photograph appeared.
A young man.
Dark hair.
Strong jaw.
Standing beside Margaret.
Leah stared.
She knew that face.
But she couldn't place it.
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“Who is that?”
Margaret's voice answered.
“His name is Adrian Hale.”
Leah's heart stopped.
Hale.
She had heard the name before.
At the hospital.
In old Blackwood records.
In one of Thomas's business files.
A financial investigator.
A man who had disappeared twenty-three years ago.
Margaret continued.
“Adrian was Thomas's closest friend.”
“He discovered the poisoning.”
“He confronted Edward.”
“And Edward tried to kill him.”
Leah whispered:
“What happened?”
Margaret looked down.
“Adrian survived.”
Daniel stared.
“Then where is he?”
Margaret looked directly into the camera.
“He is the man who saved my life.”
THE NIGHT MARGARET DISAPPEARED
The recording continued.
Margaret described the night everyone believed she died.
After Cassandra pushed her down the stairs, Margaret was taken to the private medical wing.
Edward believed she was unconscious.
But Adrian had already entered the building.
He had been investigating Thomas's death.
He found Margaret alive.
And he helped her escape.
Margaret whispered:
“He carried me out through the old service tunnel.”
“We left before Edward knew.”
“Adrian took me to a private clinic.”
“He kept me hidden.”
“He saved me.”
Leah wiped away her tears.
“Why didn't she come back?”
Margaret answered her own question.
“Because Adrian discovered something.”
“He discovered that someone had placed a price on my life.”
“Not Edward.”
“Not Richard.”
“Someone more powerful.”
The screen flickered.
Margaret whispered:
“Someone inside my own family.”
THE NAME MARGARET COULDN'T SAY
Margaret's eyes moved toward the door.
She appeared frightened.
“If I name this person, they will know I survived.”
She took a deep breath.
“They are the reason I stayed away.”
“They are the reason I let Leah believe I was dead.”
“They are the reason Daniel was raised by Edward.”
“And they are the reason Emma had to disappear.”
Leah leaned closer.
“Who?”
Margaret's voice dropped.
“Evelyn.”
Silence.
Daniel turned toward Evelyn.
Evelyn's face went white.
“No.”
Margaret continued.
“Evelyn knew about the poisoning.”
“She knew about Thomas's death.”
“She knew Edward was involved.”
“But she was not the mastermind.”
Daniel stared.
“Then what did she do?”
Margaret answered:
“She protected the mastermind.”
Evelyn began crying.
Daniel looked at her.
“Who?”
Margaret whispered:
“Your grandfather.”
THE MAN WHO BUILT THE EMPIRE
Daniel froze.
“My grandfather?”
Margaret nodded.
“Richard Blackwood.”
Leah shook her head.
“But he died.”
“He did.”
“Then how?”
Margaret's voice became cold.
“His death was staged.”
Daniel couldn't speak.
Jonathan looked at the screen.
“That's impossible.”
Margaret continued.
“Richard Blackwood never died.”
“He disappeared.”
“He transferred his wealth.”
“He changed his identity.”
“And he continued controlling the company from the shadows.”
Leah whispered:
“Richard Vale.”
Margaret shook her head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
The screen flickered.
Margaret finally said:
“His real name is Adrian Blackwood.”
Daniel's face went blank.
“Adrian?”
Jonathan stepped closer.
“Adrian Blackwood was Thomas's younger brother.”
Margaret nodded.
“He hated Thomas.”
“Why?”
“Because Thomas inherited everything.”
“And Adrian believed it should have been his.”
THE REAL WAR
The recording revealed the truth.
The Blackwood empire had been divided between Thomas and Adrian.
Thomas became the public face.
Adrian controlled the hidden investments.
But Adrian wanted everything.
He manipulated Edward.
He recruited Richard Vale.
He used Cassandra.
He controlled Victoria.
And he orchestrated the transfer of the trust.
But Thomas discovered the scheme.
So Adrian decided to remove him.
The crash wasn't an accident.
The poisoning wasn't an accident.
Margaret's disappearance wasn't an accident.
Everything had been planned.
For years.
Leah stared at the screen.
“My entire life was planned?”
Margaret's voice answered:
“No.”
“You were the one thing they couldn't control.”
THE CHILD ADRIAN FEARED
Margaret continued.
“Adrian was terrified of one person.”
Leah frowned.
“Who?”
“You.”
Leah froze.
“Why?”
“Because Thomas left something in your name.”
“What?”
“A private account.”
“Money?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“A voting right.”
Daniel looked confused.
Margaret explained:
“Thomas knew Adrian would eventually try to take the company.”
“So he transferred a small percentage of his controlling shares to Leah.”
“Those shares could only be activated when she turned twenty-five.”
Leah stared.
“How much?”
Margaret whispered:
“Sixteen percent.”
Daniel's eyes widened.
“That would make her the largest individual shareholder.”
“Yes.”
Jonathan understood.
“That changes the trust.”
Margaret nodded.
“It changes everything.”
THE TWENTY-FIFTH BIRTHDAY
Leah suddenly remembered.
Her birthday was in three months.
She had never cared about it.
But now—
She understood.
Adrian had been waiting.
He needed her before she turned twenty-five.
Because once the shares activated, he could no longer take the company.
Margaret continued:
“That is why they searched for you.”
“That is why Victoria approached Emma.”
“That is why Richard wanted the trust.”
“That is why Edward was willing to kill.”
Leah stared at the screen.
“They need me.”
“Yes.”
“They need my signature.”
“Yes.”
“And if I refuse?”
Margaret smiled faintly.
“Then they lose.”
THE LAST MESSAGE
Margaret leaned toward the camera.
“Leah.”
Her voice softened.
“I am sorry.”
“I should have raised you.”
“I should have held you.”
“I should have watched you grow.”
“But every time I wanted to return…”
“They came closer.”
“I chose your survival over my happiness.”
Leah began crying.
Margaret smiled.
“If you're hearing this, then I'm probably gone again.”
Daniel looked away.
“But don't come looking for me.”
“Not yet.”
“Because I need you to do something first.”
Leah whispered:
“What?”
Margaret answered:
“Find Adrian Hale.”
Emma suddenly gasped.
“Adrian Hale…”
Everyone turned.
“What?”
Emma pointed toward the screen.
“That isn't just the man who saved Margaret.”
Leah frowned.
“How do you know?”
Emma's face went pale.
“Because I've seen him.”
“When?”
“At the place where Edward kept me.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“What did he look like?”
Emma stared at him.
“He was old.”
“Gray hair?”
“Yes.”
“Scar on his cheek?”
Emma nodded.
Daniel's expression changed.
“Then he is alive.”
Margaret's recording continued.
“And Leah…”
A final pause.
“If Adrian Hale tells you he is your father…”
Leah stopped breathing.
Margaret looked directly into the camera.
“Believe him.”
The screen went black.
THE MAN WHO WASN'T SUPPOSED TO EXIST
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Daniel whispered:
“Adrian Hale.”
Jonathan looked at him.
“Thomas's friend.”
Margaret's protector.
Emma's possible father.
The missing investigator.
The man who supposedly disappeared twenty-three years ago.
Leah stared at the black screen.
“Where is he?”
A voice answered from behind them.
“Right here.”
Everyone turned.
A man stood in the doorway.
Older.
Gray-haired.
A scar crossed his cheek.
Leah knew him immediately.
Adrian Hale.
He looked at Margaret's recording.
Then at Leah.
His eyes filled with tears.
“I've waited a long time to meet you.”
Leah couldn't speak.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Are you Emma's father?”
Adrian looked at Emma.
Emma stared back.
“Yes.”
Emma covered her mouth.
Adrian continued:
“And I am not Thomas's friend.”
Jonathan frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Adrian looked at Leah.
“I was his brother.”
Silence.
Daniel's face went white.
“That makes no sense.”
Adrian nodded.
“It doesn't.”
He stepped into the light.
“My name is Adrian Carter.”
Leah's heart stopped.
“Thomas's younger brother.”
Jonathan whispered:
“Another heir.”
Adrian looked at him.
“No.”
He shook his head.
“I gave up my inheritance twenty-three years ago.”
“Why?”
Adrian's eyes moved toward the screen.
“Because Thomas asked me to.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“What did he ask you to do?”
Adrian answered:
“Protect his children.”
A sudden explosion shook the manor.
Windows shattered.
The lights went out.
Adrian grabbed Leah.
“Down!”
Gunfire erupted outside.
Jonathan pulled Daniel behind the desk.
Emma screamed.
Evelyn dropped to the floor.
And through the darkness—
A man's voice echoed from the hallway.
“Adrian.”
Everyone froze.
The voice was old.
Cold.
Familiar.
Adrian's face changed.
“No.”
Leah whispered:
“Who is it?”
Adrian looked toward the door.
“Your grandfather.”
The door slowly opened.
A shadow appeared.
Then a man stepped into the room.
Older.
Elegant.
Alive.
Richard Blackwood.
The man everyone believed had died twenty-three years ago.
He smiled.
“Hello, Adrian.”
Then he looked at Leah.
“And hello, my granddaughter.”
Leah stared at him in horror.
Richard raised a folder.
May you like
“It's time you learned why your mother was so afraid of me.”
